I had the good fortune to see him in his farewell performance at Carnegie Hall. What a great experience, the audience was very responsive and gave him their appreciation by standing and applauding for some time. He seemed to enjoy the outpouring of love and heartfelt appreciation he received.

Estaba lejos de la belleza tímbrica de Domingo, el apasionamiento de Carreras, o la seguridad en el agudo llena de belleza de Kraus. No se acercaba a la nota llena de Pedro Lavirgen o Antonio Cortis. Ni de lejos estaba cerca de la impresionante voz de Hipólito Lázaro, y ni en sus sueños más afortunados podía estar cerca del grande y único Miguel Fleta. Pero Carlo Bergonzi puede ser llamado "maestro" sin que nada se sorprenda. Gracie "Don Carlo". Fue usted un señor de la ópera. Todos le amamos por muchos motivos.
