  • In ancient China, there’s a history of people wearing vests to keep warm during seasonal changes. It was believed that hanfu vest was first developed around 2,000 years ago and later doubled as a fashion statement as time went on.
    Hanfu vests went through several stages during its long history and have been called many different names, including Bijia (比甲) Banbi (半臂) Beixin (背心) etc.
    Hanfu, meaning Han Chinese Clothing, or as I'd like to call it Han Couture, is what ancient Chinese people wore for thousands of years.
    Traditional Chinese Clothes changed from dynasty to dynasty and there exists hundreds of variations.

    Glad you made this video in English for all of us to learn about Hanfu Vest. I do like the timeline you use so well to take us on a journey into traditional Chinese styles and clothing. No need for a time machine just relax listen and learn. I love the supporting paintings drawings and sculpture to enhance the storyline. I also like how you give us so many details on every part of the vest. Most of all I like the effort and hard work you do to allow us a glimpse into ancient Chinese traditions of clothing and its unique place in China's past. I would like to see a traditional renaissance in our clothing styles of today. Great job

    the timeline is sooo goood! would love for you to keep putting the dates of the dynasties in the videos as well (like your earlier ones with ming dynasty hanfu). they're great for putting these dynasties in historical context!

    I like your videos about how to wear Hanfu. I really like the vests which you showed us. My favorite is the vest with the straight parallel collars! I like this one because of the pink ties. It doesn't have too many closures on it! : ) ~Janet in Canada ^.^;

    The timeline you provide is absolutely wonderful. Thank you for sharing about vests. I've always been a bit scared to make one since they seem to be made of a heavier material, but seeing how freely you can move around in one makes me want to try my hands at it!

    I am confused I read on 'newhanfu' that banbi is short-sleeved, while beizi is more or less long-sleeved, and beixin is completely without sleeves, just two strips of clothes in the front.
    You say that banbi was called beizi later (so they are the same) showing totally sleeveless garments (I always thought these are bexin - as well as the ones you demonstrate).
    Maybe you can do a video clarifying these terms and their changes during years?
    Thank you for all you gorgeous videos!

    Hello, I hope you’re still making your beautiful videos. In my history bounding group I let people know i want to make Hanfu, there is a general criticism that westerners have been too focused on western fashion so I’ve been trying to widen my focus, everyone of Chinese descent were very positive, but one woman did warn me to be careful of symbolism, for example, a Phoenix design should only be used by the Empress or on a woman’s wedding day (I believe)....I’ve tried researching this but I’m not getting any useful information - can you help?

    Tradition? 전통?? 传统? They dont undertand what is tradition, 그들은 전통이 무엇인지 모른다 他们不知道传统的意思。it is tradition that life activity and customs passing on nowaday without stop. 전통은 현재까지 끊어지지않고 이어온 생활중의 활동과 양식이다.
    传统是指到现在没有断绝地传承的生活习惯和样式。 restoration is another different definition comparing with tradition. 복원은 전통과 비교해서 또다른 개념이다. 复原是和传统不一样的概念。Hanfu is not traditional clothes but modern restored clothes 한푸는 전통복장이 아닌 복원품이다. 汉服不是传统服装而是现代复原品。because they didnt wear hanfu style from early of 17c. And we can know
