There are growing concerns among rights groups and aid agencies about North Korea’s chronic food shortages. Many experts who keep an eye on the reclusive state say the problem is growing and deaths due to starvation are likely to continue. Some see signs that the country is in the grip of its worst famine since the “Arduous March” blamed for up to 3 million deaths in the 1990s. Others, however, say conditions are not nearly as bad as they look, thanks to Chinese foreign aid propping up the economy. So what do we really know about the food crisis in one of the world’s most isolated countries?

The most disgusting part is that they refuse food aid from the UN. I sometimes get the impression that Kim sees his people as a toy army. Like, he doesn't realize these are real people with real feelings and real needs.

You are both right. There is a lack of food because of floods, etc., but an enormous amount of money that could go towards buying food, improving farm efficiency, etc. goes towards Kim Jong's obsession with missiles; which I guess could go under "poor economic management". @@yearzeroism

Fun Fact: The DPRK was the leading economy of the 2 countries up until before the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1988. In ‘94 the collectively west voted with the UN to put the heaviest sanctions any country has seen on the DPRK, these sanctions included even the export of grains to the true Korea which caused the massive famine of the DPRK. The west purposely did this to starve their country. Despite all this the Kim’s have made the DPRK into a glorious socialist paradise. Glory to the true Korea.

@@tristanclarkhawes976 there isnt even much for "Strings", typically even when sending aid to dictatorships those sending the aid usually just want some assurances that the aid is going to the citizens and isnt being pocketed by the regime. North Korea does that quiet often either selling the aid to pocket a profit or giving the "aid" out as payment in return for working for the regime, essentially using the food in lieu of a "pay check". That's one reason why not much aid has gone to Afghanistan recently; the Taliban have been withholding it and giving food to government employees or selling it instead of distributing the food to the citizens. That's one major reason why Live Aid was a bit of a disaster: they sent tons of aid but the regime pocketed almost all of it because there werent any strings attached or much monitoring.

with reports of a dire situation for the country's population. It's frustrating that we have limited access to information from North Korea, so it's difficult to know the true extent of the crisis. However, the comparison to the famine in the 1990s, known as the arduous March, is worrying. The crisis in the 1990s triggered a large outflow of North Koreans desperate to escape poverty, hunger, and devastation, with an estimated 3 million North Koreans dying from starvation or related illnesses.
It's also concerning that Pyongyang has been ramping up its nuclear weapons program in recent years, with an unprecedented number of ballistic and other missile tests recorded in the nation's history. The high level of spending on defense is also alarming, with the country spending about one-fourth of its estimated GDP on defense in 2019. Economic sanctions have been implemented, but these have had unintended consequences for the country's population, with those at the lowest levels of the pyramid suffering the most. Overall, it's a worrying situation and I hope that aid can reach those who need it most.

That ignores all the reasons why South Korea's economy surpassed North Korea's in the 1960's. North Korea received plenty of aid from the USSR and China during the Cold War. Unfortunately for the North Korean people, military investment had a far higher priority than economic investment.
Similarly, Park Chung-hee opened up South Korea to foreign direct investment in the 1960's. Even China started accepting FDI in the 1980's with the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. North Korea didn't accept foreign investment until 2002 with the Rasun Free Trade Zone. Too little, too late.

To allow the NKoreans to live well, get your US masters to lift their evil sanctions against NK and allow them to sell their products, produce and resources for incomes.
At the moment NK has zero income because the evil US sanctions banned all countries from trading with NK.

      There's a few reasons why:
      1. North Korea much like Maoist China, Stalinist USSR, and Leninist Russia, denies the famine is really happening so as to not look weak.
      2. Related to #1 they deny foreign aid for famine relief (but will accept it if it's in return for not launching nukes since that makes them look strong).
      3. They dont want foreigners in their country
      4. Often foreign aid comes with some minor strings attached, typically proof that the aid isnt just going straight to the regime. North Korea and other dictatorships often either take the free aid and use it in place of payment to get their citizens to work for the regime or they sell the aid which is supposed to be free to the citizens. The Kims have done that before since they're extremely greedy and power hungry, and their underlings do the same.
In spite of North Korean militarism and threats foreign countries have time and time again offered and even sent aid to the country. North Korea constantly complains about the US and outright insults the country, both the US government and it's citizens specifically, and even in spite of that the US has sent tons in aid over the years. Just between 1995 and 2007 the US government sent over $1bil in food aid alone with more being sent since from the US government and more yet coming from private US charities and through programs like UNICEF which has been primarily US funded. This isnt a case of the world ignoring a tragedy, it's a case of a Chinese puppet state rebuking foreign aid so they can maintain control over the country.

The timid leader of North Korea does not dare to open itself to the outside world and implement a free market economy like its neighbor South Korea

What I want to know is how are these outside agencies like the United Nations Food Security assessment getting these figures about North Korea such as 40% of people are "food insecure"? Or that 2019 was North korea's worst recorded Harvest? I don't doubt any of this is happening because I've been following the reports and documentaries about North Korea's situation a long time. But anyone with common sense knows North Korea isn't going to allow that info to be accessed by outsiders, so how are you getting it?

@@Kaniela-xq8vl , You would leave NK by walking, bicycling, or even skateboarding across the border. You can also leave by flying or taking a boat out of the country. North Korean’s can leave anytime they want too. They DO NOT want to leave their great country. Only a FOOL would want to leave. I wish I was a North Korean citizen with all the perks that come with it. NK RULES!!!

Giving up your health for stuff you don’t need, with money you don’t have to impress people you don’t like. They feel bad that you’re brainwashed and indoctrinated by western society.

Sounds exactly what the US said about the former Soviet Union. Almost word for word even when Americans like Michael Parenti would tell you the reality; the standard of the Soviet union was way higher than that of the US at the time. Right now, crumbling infrastructure and homelessness is rife in the United States but no, we can't talk about that - look over there...people starving in North Korea. You just can't make this up. If the society is "closed" as you say, so you're reporting is what you think aka western propaganda. North Korea is prospering - happy, not pushing kids in genderphobia, no drug problems. Smart scientists building sophisticated nuclear technology. Its communism at its best. Wealth is not restricted to the hands of a few. Free healthcare, no corruption. Sanctions are not working; Russia and China are trading with North Korea.
