The Helvellyn range runs broadly north-south for about 7 miles remaining above 2,000 feet (610 m) its entire length. Raise is near the centre of this ridge, with Stybarrow Dodd to the north and White Side to the south. As with many of these fells, Raise displays smooth grassy slopes on the west and rougher ground to the east. Here however the contrast is much less marked than further south around Helvellyn and Nethermost Pike.
Unusually for such a high fell, the slopes of Raise do not have a toehold at valley level on either side. In the west the boundary streams of Sticks Gill (West) and Brund Gill meet just below White Side's Brown Crag. As Fisherplace Gill they descend a further thousand feet to the valley, and originally turned north to join St John's Beck.
All of this changed as part of the Thirlmere reservoir scheme in 1894, when a water race was constructed to carry most of the water into the lake. To the east the fell is also squeezed out at height by its neighbours, failing to reach the shore of Ullswater. Raise has a short eastern ridge, Stang, descending between Sticks Gill (East) and Glenridding Beck, but these streams combine above the site of the old Greenside Mine to leave Sheffield Pike and Birkhouse Moor overlooking Glenridding.
To the north of Raise the pedestrian route of Sticks Pass crosses the ridge at a height of 2,445 feet (745 m), this being the highest pass in the District crossed by a regular bridleway.
Now of use purely to hillwalkers, it once provided the only connection between the communities on either side of the Helvellyns. The name is believed to be taken from the guideposts originally used to mark the route.
The becks flowing from either side of the pass summit are both officially named Sticks Gill, the '(East)' and '(West)' having been added by Alfred Wainwright in his Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells and utilised by later guidebook writers. To the north, beyond the pass, the ground rises again to Stybarrow Dodd and all here is grass.

Brilliant video Andy and a route Ive never done. I walked Helvellyn up from Swirls last November in the snow. It was an amazing sight early morning with the sun out. Sticks pass looks quite a slog up but nice to see another round trip up to the summit. The drone footage as always is amazing. Fantastic scenery all around Helvellyn. Cheers Andy
Thanks Tony much appreciated mate yeah Sticks Pass is a bit of a pull up but gets you up quickly it's a great walk from Raise to Helvellyn and much more quiet than some of the other routes 😊👍🏻
Hope your keeping well buddy ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐
Simply stunning, certainly made me feel like I'm in exile.
Thanks for tuning in Mark very much appreciated mate 😊 👍🏻

Hey Andy, great walk with superb views really throuhgout the day, great route up mate, you were never going to do the standard, love it. Superb drone footage as per these days. but really showed off the beauty and ruggedness of the fell, stunning. Agree with you on the mountain choice and somehow the name of the mountain does set a feeling inside, COME ON Helvellyn, what a name. Subscibed to Tracey's channel some time ago and she has a really great calm feeling on her hikes which I love, also very different which I do like, great knowledge of the area like yourself. Would love to be a fly on your guys wall after a joint hike LOL. Great one again Andy, thanks for sharing
Cheers Steve it's a great route I've done many times I love Stick Pass nice and steep almost straight from the car gets you up on that Ridge Line fast and it's always a quiet way too...thanks as always for the great feedback and support buddy very much appreciated 😊

Did Swirral and Striding edge a month ago. Not as tough as was made out. Great mountain but I still prefer Blencathra via Halls Fell ridge.
Great video mate 👍
Swirral and Striding Edge are both superb Ridges grade 1s and not too difficult scrambles for any one confident with a la'al bit exposure...lol I've done a lot harder and in all honesty scared the crap out of myself on more than one occasion...Blencathras Halls Fell Ridge I agree buddy its the best... My favourite Ridge in't Lakes.
Thank for watching very much appreciated 😊 👍🏻

Thanks for this one, and excellent footage! This is the only one I've seen that shows the section of Sticks Pass from Legburthwaite to the top of the ridge to Raise. Needed to see how good or bad it was as that is where we will descend on our Helvellyn route (start at Dunmail Raise, up Raise Beck to Grisedale Tarn and up Dollywagon, Nethermost, Helvellyn, Little Man, Whiteside, and Raise). That section looks perfectly fine, just steep. Using the Stagecoaches for this one to minimize how much I need to drive/park and they stop at our beginning and end points.
What you've planned is a teriffic walk I do the same from Dunmail Raise often but rather than come down I walk the whole Ridge back the opposite way back to Dunmail Raise
Sticks Pass is a great path up or down it always has the advantage of been quite too.
Enjoy buddy all the very best for tuning into the channel 😊👍🏻

Just found your channel and just watched a couple of videos. They're very informative and excellent quality and love the drone footage and detailed directions. I'm just retired and we are planning some walks in the Lakes and your routes look excellent. I'm going to watch a few more today . You seem a very fit guy if you don't mind how old are you?
