    So far, I have documented 10 years of my life through journals. I can look back at my 11 year old thoughts. I plan on keeping journals for the rest of my life 😊

      +Vanessa Butler i don't see the point of journal your life it is expose your mind and some time you write things your don't agree with it in older age for varies reason .

    • @basshart1440
      @basshart1440 8 лет назад +5

      +Vanessa Butler good point , but there is difference , journaling meant to be private a secret confession about events in your life and your perception to it and if it exposed or fall to wrong hands can ruin your life , yes it is a good way to improve your self but for me it is just scary , and RUclips comment is an interactive way with another human being about subject like this now for example .

    • @dustinkrejci6142

      +Vanessa Butler journaling;it allows you to remember when we forget, reflect back to who we were, to who we are as one's identity, and where/how far we have come.
      it is a record of our life.
      To those we love, we have a record of us to share with them:yourself, bf, husband, bff, family, your child,your grandchildren..etc.
      I think it is an attractive quality in a person to journal.
      Outward beauty only goes so far until we age;but the majestic things of the soul are for this life and the eternal afterwards.
      I'd say to you,keep going with your journals.

      +Dustin Krejci This is an amazing reply. thank you! I really like looking back and seeing how much I've changed and grown. It's like looking at old photographs. I suffer from anxiety and writing helps me realize that my fears are just thoughts and that I can get through them.

      I wish I did that when I was younger! I've made countless attempts to keep a journal, but often stopped after a couple of entires as I was never committed. It would have been great to look back on it now. Come to this of it, I think I'm going to start writing now. :)

    The best part about journaling is digging it up years later and seeing where your mind was in comparison to where you are presently

  • @sketchlee1856
    @sketchlee1856 8 лет назад +477

    Here's how my journaling cycle goes. I'll write a journal, and then after a couple days I'll get bored and ditch the journal. Then a year or so later I'll find the journal, and realize that it's fun to look back., and realize that I want to make something to look back on again. So I'll start another journal, and then ditch it after a couple of days, and then a year or so later, find the journal, and the cycle continues.

    • @MegaSmileygirl12
      @MegaSmileygirl12 8 лет назад +3

      My advice is to do it every once in a while, journaling should be a fun thing and not feel like a homework assignment where you think you have to do it every single day. Keep up writing in one journal and over time you'll see how one page amounts to many. :)

      +Bobby the Blobfish I did the same thing for a long time. Maybe a line a day journal would be a good way to get into it? Or a holiday journal (new year's, Christmas, birthday)? You could also do a monthly journal with a paragraph of your life at the end of every month. Journals are really cool to look back on years later. :)

    They didn't take it seriously since they knew they would be sharing it later. If they were to write on it and keep it personal, I'm sure they would've been more into it.

    • @sumchick345
      @sumchick345 8 лет назад +19

      +Mr. Poopybutthole I'm not so sure about that. They didn't have to share everything the wrote.

    • @ThePhotory
      @ThePhotory 8 лет назад +2

      +Mr. Poopybutthole Are you to decide wether they took this seriously or not? And does it really have to be serious? A journal is by no means obligated to contain sensitive thoughts or your deepest secrets. If you feel that you get something out of it than that should be enough of a reason to be considered "serious journaling." If you achieve that by either bleeding your heart out or just fooling around is only relevant to the writer.

    • @nonono777
      @nonono777 8 лет назад +2

      +Mathias Barefeet I for example prefer not putting my deepest secrets and thoughts on paper since I know I (or someone else) will read it later and maybe won't agree with the stuff I put in there so I will just be super embarrassed :(

    • @star12341998
      @star12341998 8 лет назад +1

      +Nonono but that's also one of the interesting things about journaling, being able to see a change in your mindset over the years and see how different you are now! (Which, like you said is disagreeing with what you wrote in the journal) I think it's very interesting to see the progress and how a person grows :) and as for other people reading your journal, just keep it in a safer location haha. It's in no way embarrassing to see yourself have silly or different opinions in the past, it's just you and how much you've grown :)

    • @star12341998
      @star12341998 8 лет назад +4

      Nonono Awe :P It just takes some practice I suppose. I usually try to journal at least once a week, and when I'm really emotional (pissed or sad) I just rant everything into it xD like I pretend it's my friend and write everything I'd say to her. ayeeee but it's k :> You can try keeping an online blog or sth (but it's kinda the same i guess o-o?)

  • @LilChuunosuke

    I once attempted to keep a journal to keep my private thoughts in, but whenever my mom would help me clean my room, she would pick up every single journal and flip through all the pages to look and see what I wrote. She once spent 10 minutes searching my messy closet floor for the key to a single journal I said I didn't use so she could look through to make sure.
    She did this the day after I ripped up and threw out a journal entry where I wrote that I had suicidal thought and it was all her fault and that really turned me off from keeping a journal, especially since I know she would be mad at me for writing that if she saw it instead of getting me mental help.
    When I move out, I wanna get back in the habit. I don't want to write about my day or my emotions, though, at least not directly. I want to write stories. Maybe they are just a character's thoughts or maybe its an epic adventure. Either way, I could write down all my emotions in extreme detail without it clearly implying they were my emotions and it would allow me to practice my writing whenever I used the journal.

      I feel the same way, but not about the journaling thing. Even though I know that it's probably not as fun as it sounds, I can't wait to have my own dorm, apartment, then my own home where I can do anything. Buy things that are unnecessary but make me feel good, experiment with things, be as tumblr as I want, go exercise without my parents saying, "REALLY? Wow, that's surprising," EVEN THOUGH I EXERCISE LIKE FOUR DAYS A WEEK MY PARENTS STILL GET SURPRISED. Like oh my gosh, just stop questioning everything I do and let me try to become a better person.

    • @LilChuunosuke
      @LilChuunosuke 8 лет назад +29

      ***** I tried talking to my mom about it, but she insisted that as long as I am living under her roof, everything that I think is mine actually belongs to her.
      She does often flip my mattress when cleaning it (or when she is mad at me for being asleep and flips me onto the floor), but I had not thought about keeping it in my backpack. That is definitely something I could try. :3
      Also, thanks, I have actually heard of 7 cups of tea, I just need to finally remember to use it at some point when I am home alone.

      Why don't you write your journals on your computer? Or on an online blog but you can be a private account (if possible or anon) or keep it in drafts, so only you can see it. That way you have a password to your laptop/phone/iPad/computer and a password and username to the blog account you use :) I can suggest a few if you like? :))

    I don't really "journal" a whole lot. I find myself writing what's on my mind throughout the day in short sentences and miniature poems. But when I do journal, I write pages and pages and I can't stop. I even have one page where I can see where the tear drops landed on the written words and it just brings back the sadness from that time in my life. Journaling unlocks my brain cage; sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it.

    • @666abesanchez
      @666abesanchez 7 лет назад +9

      I rarely find myself Journaling and not having to shed a tear. or many. I have been Journaling since a year ago. and I've been through a lot within that year. looking back from a darker me. I realize that your mentality at that particular moment is much different than the time you read it. it's the most human thing we can do. evolve our consciousness and looking deep into ourselves.
      the hand and pen are one. just as the mind and paper. together they form the sea which our minds sail unto. for our consciousness is the seven seas waiting to be explored

  • @JennieKerfuffle

    I don't really "journal" regularly, but every few weeks or months I'll feel motivated to write in this journal that I've kept since I was like 9. I view a journal as a collection of thoughts and feelings that tell the story of your personal growth to your future self. It's really neat to read an entry from 8 years ago and be like "wow, I didn't even remember that". I can't wait to be 70 and read these entries, lol.

    Writing in a journal has been one of the best things I ever started in my entire life. It helped me discover myself. At the time I kept it hidden because I was so shy. Now that I have a lot more confidence I decided to share it with the world hoping the people going through the same issues with social anxiety see that it is possible to change. Much love :)

    My dad's been keeping a journal since around the time he learned I was gonna be a thing, so there's about 20 years of journals sitting on a bookshelf in my house. He writes in them just about every single day, and when I was younger I asked him why. He told me it was so that when he was gone, I'd be able to read this journals and look back on my father's life in a new light. I guess every time he thinks about his late father, he wishes he'd've had a journal to read. My grandpa passed when my dad was 20, and at that point, he didn't know much about his father. That's something he's always wanted to avoid with my brother and I, which is part of why he writes in his journal. He's told me plenty of times that he keeps these journals simply for my brother and I. I used to try to journal, but it never caught on for me. Most of my private thoughts are across my Twitter and various tumblrs, so I guess that's a journal, in a sense.

    I began journaling when I was 10 years old which was a decade ago, and it was a good way to process my thoughts as well as improve my writing and English because I had just immigrated from Manila to America. Then when I was in high school, something happened and I got situational depression. I wrote everything down but instead of relieving me of my sadness, it just aided in me getting fixated with the event(s) that were the reason for my depression. So I ditched writing both my physical journal and my tumblr blog. I dwelled too much on the negative. I turned to exercise and focusing my energy on being healthy and active and being present. :) now I feel much better 4 years later. So if you find yourself focusing on the negative when you write, switch it up and focus on the positives. Your mind is a powerful thing so be careful.

    When i was super little, i had my first real crush. I thought i was in love. So, like any other love-crazed little girl, i wrote in my diary about him. I even put on lipstick and kissed the bottom of the page and I thought I was being real cute like the movies. But, my older sister found it and tormented me with it before showing it to my whole family, laughing at me. I ripped in up, angry and humiliated, but she took the pieces out of the trash, taped it back together, and put it on her journal so she could see it forever, remember it forever, and torment me about it forever.
    I haven't wrote a real entry since.

      +ithinkitskatie Thats so sad, if i had found your dairy page I would have came into your room and said, okay, your not in love, and this is a little over the top, but its cute. In my family, we are very open with each other, so my mom can count every crush that i have ever had, so technically, even if i did tell my parents, nothing would really change. But if in your family its not the same, then i would keep the secret between you and me.

    I used to cut and have suicidal thoughts constantly. But I've overcome that now all because someone told me that journaling might help. And it did!! I can express myself however I want in my journal. Wether it's doodling pictures, writing ongoing paragraphs about what's going on in my head, or just how my day went. It's also a really good way to relive stress, anger, and any other emotions you have. It's like always having a friend listening to every word you say; or in this case, write :)

    I've kept a journal for 7 years now. It helps me with EVERYTHING!
    • My mind seems more ordered when I journal vs. not
    • I remember everything I write so I'll write test reviews and stuff in them and it always helps my memorizing
    • I don't feel the need to blabber my problems to friends or new people because I have a healthy place to express them
    • My problem solving is better (though still slow, but I have a chronic illness and those who have them often call it "pain brain")
    • It gets me off my phone more! I take it everywhere: class, work outings... When I have a free moment, I wip it out (unless someone can see what I'm writing. That's an issue for me) and share my thoughts on my surroundings
    • I understand people better because I'll write down who they are, what they're doing, and why I think that and I've been able to assess situations with them much better!
    I hope this information helps anyone who's looking to journal. It is my safe haven. I've threatened people who have tried to take it from me. Even punched someone... It becomes part of you.

    Journaling for me is the best. Before i go to bed i write down my feels or thoughts about my day. People may think it's silly to have a journal but i've been writing since October of 2013 & let me say that personally when i look back at my old journals it's like im reading someone elses journal bc i have improved so much in my mental health state & it's great to reflect on past things bc for me it's a reminder that im not as fragile as i use to be nor that unstable & that makes me feel so much better about myself. I have never taken therapy even though i know it would be good for me but i rather write to pour every thought or feeling in a healthy manner.

My dad found it one day, and after reading it, came to the conclusion that the thoughts I was conveying in my writing were too dark to be human and I was in fact possessed by a demon. I tried to get into journaling for years and never seemed to keep up. Kinda what the people in the video did, I began to do other things than just document my day; I would doodle in the journal while at work, or write grocery lists, or use it as a planner for finances for the next few months. Anything that was important and I wanted to have written down in my purse would go in the journal.
    I've been doing this for three years now, and I *love* it. It's actually really fun to look back at the random things I needed in a store from 2 years ago, or to see my random inspired ramblings that came out of my planner (I would talk about needing to save money for a plane ticket, and suddenly I'd wanna write a little bit about how I hope the plane trip will go). It really gives me a sense of how my life was at those different times, and meanwhile I don't have to add anything like it's a chore or look back and cringe over any weird thoughts I might have added while conventionally journaling!

    I currently keep a journal where I put down all of my bad thoughts during panic attacks and mental breakdowns. So instead of failing to breathe and to think publically, I do it all by myself in my room while holding a pen in my shaky hand and writing down what goes through my mind which is often only a glimpse of how I really feel because it's just so complicated. I plan to find a good therapist and read it all out to them because I'm really bad at expressing my feelings vocally without any preparation.

    • @marixx9848
      @marixx9848 7 лет назад

      I'm the same way about words. Speaking without any preparation I mean. I find myself stumbling over my words and thoughts and it just all...flares up. No good. I don't envy those who get anxiety attacks often. Every once in a while I do have one, but It doesn't happen often because I'm fairly good at staying in the background...but anyway, journaling is like having a voice, but one that isn't going to the world. I think of it as like talking to someone who will never judge me, and that's how I can get my feelings out where I won't make a fool of myself, instead of letting it build up and then saying something I will regret later on. It actually makes me feel better to know that there are other people out there who understands. Now I just need to meet one in real life.. ;)

If you really look at everyone's social media accounts it's really nothing but the bare basic of us and where we all want to show/ say look how great I am, look at this amazing lunch I had, look at all the events I'm going to and so on. Journalling is so much more than that. You aren't writing something for someone else to read, only you. I had a small journal when I was little but rarely wrote in it. Years later I got back into journaling when my anxiety attacks starting coming back. I've suffered with anxiety since I was really little and now it's at its worst so I tend to worry and overthink a lot. Right before bed I write everything that is going through my mind. It doesn't feel like a chore at all it just feels like a natural part of my routine. Journaling helps me figure things out in my head and it's nice to look back on paper and see how much progress I've made through my mental health journey. I really love it! Also I hide it under my mattress so no one will find it.

    seriously if someone has a journal and they don't want people to see it, why do people still want to open it and read it out loud! that's why I stopped journaling because jerks don't know what's their problem

    I'm journaling every single day, since January now.. It's a regular part of my day.
    It's actually so cool to take my journal and read what's happend like 6 months ago. It helps me remember those little things that are able to make me happy :)

    I struggle with ppd anxiety and journaling helped me so much. Feeling like I have no one who understands anything that I'm going thru is really really hard. Journaling allowed me to feel like I was talking to a friend or someone who won't judge me or laugh at me or anything it's the best thing ever

    I'm a writer and a deep one at that but with journaling, I get too deep and too raw and end up having to rip up the pages just in case my brother or anyone else finds it hidden somewhere.. ** I recommend journaling to everyone. I also recommend decorating it and/or making it yourself.. It helps with the motivation to actually write.. Don't worry about grammar or spelling, it's not a school project. You can get as deep as you want and say sh*t that don't even make sense..

    I've kept a journal since I was about 10 years old and to this day at now 22 years old, I still write in them. Keeping a journal helps me figure out myself, what I am going through and what makes me happy. Plus it is fun to go back and read all of my old journals to see how far I've come in my life!

    I think one of the rewards for it is reading really old entries and seeing how much I've changed/grown as a person.

    I just finished a journal that I started in 2013. It has so many memories and thoughts about random things and I love it so much! It's like my little baby and my whole mind in almost 3 years. I'm so glad I did it, i'm always going back and laughing or crying about the things I wrote about. It's so good to go back on and know what I was thinking at the time, because otherwise I would have no idea today! I just bought another journal that I've already started, and i'm so excited as to where it will take me over time.

    I don't really keep a "journal" but I do keep a dream one, it's nice to somethimes go trough it and read some crazy dreams I had almost forgot also is a good source of inspiration because sometimes there would be pretty good ideas that could only come from the world that are build on our dreams.

      I do the same thing. I've got this gorgeous journal and it sits on my nightstand and when I wake up from a dream, I write it down. It is crazy how much I dream about being able to float/fly above buildings and people. It is the most relaxed feeling (or at least it is in my dreams)

      kind of embarassing but a lot of my dreams are about romance/etc. or they're completely weird like a mermaid dream or me being a superhero

    Growing up with 5 younger siblings, and 3 older, it was IMPOSSIBLE to keep a journal. As an adult, I find it super peaceful. I can write down my thoughts, emotions and ideas, and a lot of the time, I really get carried away. I've written ten pages for one day before, and then other days I've filled it with nothing but drawings. Keeping a journal (in my opinion) lets you express yourself in the deepest way possible, and find new things out about yourself.

    When I started university I decided to start Journalling every night, its been three years now and its one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. I do it every night even when I'm tired because it helps me to work through the days events and vent. Its so fun looking back at old entries from past years and seeing how I've changed. I think I will be journalling for the rest of my life .

    I've kept a journal/diary since around... 2004? I don't write in it as often as I used to, but I still love to have them around for whenever I need to vent or rage. I write to my journal as if it were someone. I don't think I'll ever not have one. I love them.

    I always like the idea of keeping journals, but I can never seem to commit fully. I have a bunch of journals where there are a small handful of entries each, and there's nothing else. I occasionally write in journals, but there are always huge time gaps in between entries.

    I agree with the... guy whose name escapes me. Journalling to reflect on yourself isn't for everyone. Recording the fun little things makes it more interesting (and writing down what seems like meaningless little details like buying a projector sometimes helps me in the long run).

    My journals are my best companions. Sometimes I’ll wake out of a sleep at 2 am and use it to catch snippets of poetry I dreamt. I never use journals as narratives though. I’ll write about a bit of life that may be worth remembering, but to me, journals are the messy places you use to hold all the weird thoughts and feelings you have that the world wouldn’t be ready for. An exploration instead of a documentation.

    I know it looks silly now but im 20 and I was reading my journals from 5 years ago and I can tell you writing in one is so worth it. I remembered memories and stuff about me I completely forgot about. I laughed and cried at my own silliness and I realised how similar things I still am from the younger me. Please write one and you'll be so happy you did in a few years time. Facebook/Social media does not tell the truth and may be twisting your memories into something that they weren't. Have a go :) x

    I've kept a journal for 2 years now, and it's seriously helped me to become a more realistic, mature person. When you're detailing a situation and then reading it back to yourself, you can see things more clearly imo. It's also just a great way to get things off your chest and keep track of your growth. I'd recommend it to everyone, it's not about "remembering" to write everyday, it's supposed to be there for when you want it.
