How to Determine the Cause of a Vibration on a 1992 Dodge Dakota

- In this video Bernie diagnoses a driveline vibration on a 1992 Dodge Dakota. Before he got to the vehicle, it had many parts installed, none of which remedied the vibration. Previously installed were; harmonic balancer, front end parts, new tires, transmission and driveshaft. Even though it was a steering wheel shake / vibration, the issue was not in the front end.
Using the iVA intelligent vibration analyzer, Bernie found an out of balance left rear brake drum and driveshaft.

I thought they reduced video quality to make it as authentic to 1992 as possible. Still good
😂 me too. The color balance makes it look vintage, I thought Bernie pulled it out of the archives.
I was a tech for 20 years and still have ASE Master and L1 status. It's crap like this that made me hang up my wrenches. Having to trust your paycheck and your reputation to someone else. There's no confidence anymore that anyone knows what they're doing. It's basically a coin flip if that NEW part will even work, that's including ones from the dealership. My best advice to any working technicians is that if a vehicle hits your bay and has been to another shop and had work done or parts replaced ; you CANNOT assume that those parts installed are correct and working AND the yahoo that installed them actually knew what they were doing. There's a term called "technician installed problem". It needs to be on yalls radar when dealing with ping pongs like this one.
Really great video BTW. Enjoyed watching the process.
The problem today is, Congress sold America out to China. China declared war on the American the people 1970, Not the Country/Government. Also, Obama imported the African Medical, Education systems into America. Then started importing people who hate America. China sends toxic food, other products that are complete trash. China steals all of our tech, while Congress cripples the Country.
Bernie was this recorded on VHS to match the decade of the truck?
LOL
Need to add some tracking marks for the transitions
Bernie driving down the highway at 75 listening to the Beachboys... pickin up the good vibrations. Great educational video on how to use the NVH kit to solve an issue that six others couldn't.
PURPLE!
this was a good explanation that i'm sure i will be relaying to someone with a similar problem in the future, definitely nice streamlined thought process here. mark cuban would be proud
Great lesson ! As a DIY , I learned plenty from this . What I can't understand is HOW these shops get away with this . You rebuild a transmission and it does the EXACT same thing ! Not to mention tires and front end parts . This wasn't a $ 20 relay that " may " be worn ! Unfortunately , there are few shops willing to INVEST in training and technology . It would be a service if you had a list of shops that own your equipment . It would be more likely to get a better outcome with one of these shops . Unfortunately , the audio cut out for a while before the end .
Always a good day when Bernie post always learning something
I was thinking of an axle bearing on the outside tube portion of the rear axle, the drum wouldn't have been something I would have though of at least not a first. I was fascinated by how you put the drum on the wheel balancer wish you would have show that process.
Another great diag!
The tool kicks ass and Bernie kicks ass too😃👍. Amazing Bernie.
Honestly I was thinking right rear drum BUT expected the balancing weight had come off. Great job Bernie. This channel is AWESOME!!! Peace
Pretty nifty idea. So having a background in acoustics, electrical and mechanical engineering would help in making one of these.
Back in action Bernie!
What's up with the bad quality lately though? Looks like the video is from 1992.
👍🏽 you're the man Bernie! It's not all in the tool. Takes a real tech to analyze the data and have a keen eye for the abnormal like you do.
What's up with replacement parts these days???
the tool kicks ass but so does the user. lots of people wouldn't notice those weights on the brake drum or the driveshaft weights being too big.
This guy knows his stuff
Top Work Bernie as always 🙂
What's wrong with the video quality?
The tools are LATEST technology, while camera is 1980's Super-8. But, doesn't matter; I got it.
Great video Bernie Thompson 👍
Great video as always, Bernie
Please could you get a modern camera as I struggled to read your PC screen from low quality video
Awesome diagnostic tools
1 driveshaft revolution, ah ah ah, 2 driveshaft revolutions, ah ah ah, 3 driveshaft revolutions ah ah ah
Excellent job I did learn a lot thanks
Bernie, such awesome work!!!
Outstanding diagnosis. Bernie must be all out of bubble gum.
If i could give you 2 thumbs up I would! Great video and awesome tool
The Best !
Wow thats a great job. I was thinking maybe bent axle...
👋Sir very nice explanation, blessings
My dear teacher..👍
If one of those shops tried to balance the tires on the vehicle you may need to rebalance that tire also.
Very informative 👍.
"This tool kicks ass" With Bernie operating the tool it does. Let me have that tool and it wouldn't kick as much ass.
I had a 2009 Dodge Ram, it had a vibration at certain conditions that got worse, the dealers was useless, I ended up trading it in for a Tundra and never looked back.
Are you telling me this pick up has been to 6 different shops and no one understands how to do a simple visual (no expensive electronic tester required) check of driveline phasing and the purpose of it?
Amazing. I hope this is a solution for a wonderful Aussie RUclips guy @Motoringbox who has a similar sounding issue with his Ford Falcon. It’s starting to become a ping pong ball as well. I’ve shared the video and hope he sees it.
Hi Bernie I have a 93 dakota and I'm getting the ping pong. I'm in Columbus Ohio and I have a shutter or vibration as well. But telling a mechanic here this would blow their minds. Can ANYONE TELL ME WHERE I CAN TAKE MY TRUCK (I LOVE) AND GET IT FIXED. I AM WILLING TO TRAVEL TO ANY STATE. AS I TRAVEL FOR A LIVING. THIS BEAUTIFUL DAKOTA I HAVE IS MY DAILY DRIVER TOO. I HAVE NEW EVERYTHING. NO RUST AND I JUST LOVE IT. PLEASE HELP
Crazy how bad things are made, where did you buy those two drums, specifically the weighted one?
Really doesn't matter. Everything being made in China, who declared war on the American people in 1970. Not our Country, but on the people themselves.
Hey Bernie I believe you got 1.75 turns on the driveshaft the second go around. Can you just times that by 2 and get the 3.5 or 3.6 ratio? I'm assuming you've tested this and it's not always true?
cleanest 92 Dakota on earth ,........aftermarket parts have always caused trouble on mopars , you have to weed through and find the lesser of evils .......Christmas is coming i know what i want Santa

Bernie recorded this video with a blackberry for sure
