If AI ever take a human form it would look just like Bernie. You, sir, make this look easy. Kudos for all of your hard work showing the rest of us things that we wouldn't even think of. Bernie, I am not worthy.
Like...99% of mechanics DON'T use oscilloscopes, they are part changers, grease monkeys. That's why automotive industry is not respected by any "higher" ones (marine, aviation, industrial, heavy construction/mining equipment etc.).
I agree with you. I have all Ats pressure transducers except the exhaust amplifier. Great tools and easy to use and you can diagnose and make money so easily and efficiently. Best scope ever plus the ecops can easily ride on top of the coils. Love ATS tools.
I like Bernie's videos, but ATS equipment is a ripoff. No support, no tutorials, no waveforms library, just pay them and F off. Even his paid classes will have people scratching their heads feeling as if they learned nothing at all. Just buy Pico and OTC for diagnostic and specialized tools. Most OTC comes with a lifetime warranty and Pico has hella software and guided test support.
That intake vacuum and exhaust pulse capture was spectacular! 😁 Going to try this method next time before pulling spark plugs. Would it only be effective on an engine with one good and one bad bank? 🤔
I have done it on inline or v engines , with inline engines you can compare the pulses in between cylinders , on v engines you can do the same thing plus compare the valve train activity between bank to banks which will give you the result of out time if no pulling or pushing even.
My partner breaks out in laughter every time I see a new video when I let out a " hello, how y'all doin today" Brilliant run through. I'm always interested in how customers and shops operate. If you're fixing a phaser issue. Why in the he'll would run the risk of not replacing just one. I know that wasn't the issue here. But it's bound to fail. Just do it once and forget about it. In this case it bit him in a very different way and had to spend the money anyway.
Very enlightening as usual. One thing though. It takes about ten minutes to remove this intake, not three hours. Nevertheless, I always learn something new and useful, even if I don't have access to ATS equipment.
I've been a tech at Mercedes for 12 years now. It does not take three hours to get there. I'm glad for every shop that can charge that much time for this job because of the book haha
Bernie I love the excitement you exude when you give us yet another example of the power of the ATS tools. I've learned so much from you and the tools have saved me untold hours of diagnosis time. Please keep the videos coming! Thank You!
you are the best tech ive ever seen, i do auto electric in cruces and thanks to you i mastered networks, my pie is in the electronic portion of vehicles such as fixing modules, pcms, etc keep up the awesome work
This is my first video and this is great stuff. I did plugs I believe on that motor recently and was able to remove the coils and plugs with a some effort and no intake removal . I think you can do the front one pretty easy to do bank 2 in cylinder waveform. All of them are not fun and you have to be careful because the plug sticks to the boot pretty good. Cool alternate technique though.
I’d suggest using the downstream o2 as a backup to confirming upstream truth as an option. If the pre cat was lying the post cat would be stuck low very hard.
Extent video, great teaching. It's hard to find anything on these engines. I do know you don't need to remove intake, just the airbox and the computer bracket. Even Mercedes techs do not remove intake for plug service, but they still charge as if they did.
We're are seeing so many issues with cam phasers on ALL makes of cars and trucks , I've done 3 Toyotas with rattle and noise issues and just dis a 2011 Jeep with the infamous 3.6 pentastar.
Customer supplies their own parts and mechanic puts it together incorrectly. Cat is shot on B2. If customer tells me to install their own timing set that probably takes 10 hours to install, I would have sent them down the road. Awesome job diaging their mistakes Mr. Thompson.
I use scops. But it not easy in a town that just don't think they are worth and so agents them. Is realy sad. No matter how much I show the need for it im still not getting through. Even my brother in law is agents them. He feel if you use the scan tool right thats good enough. So sad.
another great case! After the repair, did you take some known goods for cam/crank? PS. most of the time you can get those coils and plugs without removing that plenum..
Does anyone know the internal design of the exhaust analyser signal booster? Is it a venturi or a gradually reducing cone that the transducer is referencing?
Would a cam crank coorolation see this? Difference in timing actuation or position? No expert on euro trash but a Nissan was mistimined like this I'd see it with both of the above.
People don't realize how important it is to change the engine oil frequently if your engine is equipped with cam phasers. Tarnish from dirty oil will cause cam phasers to stick and rattle.
Ok, I'm confused. At about 7:25 Bernie states that cat on bank 1 is bad. Later on in the diag bank 1 cat is never mentioned again. Is bank 1 cat bad or not?
Even if it was bad its not the reason bernie was called to help this shop out. As scanner danner says "cant fix everything i see along the way. I wasnt called out for this problem"
I don't know how a "minor" exhaust cam mistime would affect compression pressures. That said, I can't think of any one of Bernie's videos where he does relative compression.
Cam phasers need to be clean and not gummed up from old oil. I change my oil at 5k miles and about every 35k miles I’ll put 1/3 of a can of Seafoam in the crankcase. I’ll drive for about 2 weeks with it in there. It eats all the varnishing off of the inside of the engine and keeps it running in top condition.
Thank you for sewing up this video the way you did. Bernie, I love you man, but when a video doesn't have a verified fix, it leaves doubt, no matter if you are right or naught. I hope that ATS will transition to electric cars. ADAS will be big. So will NVH and thermal image diagnosis. We should collaborate. Just saying. Jim Eve's Automotive
Watch again till the end. Cams out of phase screw up the ECU, it cannot control the bank correctly (it tries via ignition and/or injectors). Nothing here is "breathing more air" (that's not the point). Combustion process is disturbed by wrong timing.
I think that part of the exhaust gases need to stay in combustion chamber to help in next combustion process in this case in the video all gases escaped in exhaust and the raw fuel cannot burn efficiently
Incomplete combustion process due to cam timing. Unburnt fuel is being read by o2 sense taking away 31% trim. Basically in injectors injecting into exhaust,

Why on earth would you pay to have the timing chains done and not do all the cams. He already bought 3 what is one more on that bill. Just dumb. When replace my timing chains, it did all the actuators, sensors, cams, oil pump and the water pump because it is all right there.
Bernie you are on another level when it comes to diagnosis and interpretation of lab scope waveforms! Amazing!
If AI ever take a human form it would look just like Bernie. You, sir, make this look easy. Kudos for all of your hard work showing the rest of us things that we wouldn't even think of. Bernie, I am not worthy.
These videos make me proud to of invested in all the ATS gear. Its amazing how many techs are not aware of lab scope diagnostics and ATS equipment .
Like...99% of mechanics DON'T use oscilloscopes, they are part changers, grease monkeys.

I enjoy all your videos! One question:What did the cat look like after the timing correction?

You don’t need to pull the intake off to replace the plugs.
Would a cam crank coorolation see this?
Difference in timing actuation or position?
No expert on euro trash but a Nissan was mistimined like this I'd see it with both of the above.
When you are verifying the exhaust waveform at the end, 1,3,5 waveform looks a bit different than 2,4,6. What might that signify?
Good video as always
you are the best
So a bad phaser was throwing the timing off? or was timing not set correctly?
That’s my biggest question alongside was the catalytic converter defective
Car owner supplied wrong ones (and only 3, not 4 this car needed) and/or they were installed incorrectly. Cat. converter is OK.
People don't realize how important it is to change the engine oil frequently if your engine is equipped with cam phasers. Tarnish from dirty oil will cause cam phasers to stick and rattle.

Even if it was bad its not the reason bernie was called to help this shop out. As scanner danner says "cant fix everything i see along the way. I wasnt called out for this problem"
So was the cat bad or not? Fantastic stuff.
Yes, CO and HC should be pretty much 0 with good cats at lambda 1.
Can you watch the whole thing? Cams out of phase. Cat is OK.
Watching for entertainment only! Way over my pay grade
Wow nice
So what happen with the converter?
2222 to 2333 of the video after the fix the gasses are now normal the cats are working as they should🎓😁
hell yeah
Would this show on a relatively compression test
I don't know how a "minor" exhaust cam mistime would affect compression pressures.
