    Welcome back to another episode of That Cost How Much?! The series where we try DIYing expensive decor that we see at some of our fav stores. We decided to tackle an especially over priced item, and that item is plant stands. Although we love the way they look, why should we have to break the bank?? These are all super simple and we'd love to see you recreate them. Let us know what stores or items you'd like to see us try next time in the comments below!

    Tip for people who don't want to buy the whole stain-jar for smaller projects: You can use acrylic paint, just mix it with water and you are ready to go!

    • @lestranged
      @lestranged 5 лет назад +21

      I was going to suggest the same thing. A small 4 oz bottle of acrylic craft paint is 79 cents at Michael's (at least here in the US it is, probably more in Canada) and you won't even use half of it because you dilute it with a lot of water to get the stain effect. The craft paint comes in a lot more colors than wood stain, too. So you can shave $8 off those DIYs.

    • @blairedarling7171

      Whats the water to paint ratio? Or what should the consistency look like if theres no set ratio

    • @blankcanvassyndrome1716
      @blankcanvassyndrome1716 5 лет назад +7

      @@blairedarling7171 it should be runny like water but tinted, the more you use paint the deeper the outcome will be. For example you could use 2dl water, and the same amount of paint when you use toothpaste when brushing teeth. Remember to stir it really well, and try it a small amount first. If the outcome is too deep, add water or dry the wood immediately after staining. You can add layers too.

    • @lestranged
      @lestranged 5 лет назад +7

      @@blairedarling7171 It should look thin and watery, like a watered down fruit juice. I would start with like 1 part paint and 3 parts water. Do a test on some scrap wood and let it dry. Then adjust if you want it more sheer or more opaque. Make sure to stir it well before using because the pigments will sink to the bottom. Paint it on and then immediately rub off the excess with a clean cloth.

      @Jen_S_Hassler1258 5 лет назад +7

      Had anyone tried using shoe polish instead of stain? That might work well, too, so long as you put it on in light coats until you get to the shade you want. (Yeah, I'm a "pretty far outside the box" thinker sometimes.) 🤓

    Here is a little tip! I’m no construction/power tool person but for the bucket stand (2nd DIY) you could carve out slots in the frame as there are little blocks sticking out where the handle was attached to. This would not only make it look better but it would also make it look like it was made like that and not a DIY. And at my local hardware and paint store they have this galvanised spray paint so I could get that worn and aged look. These hacks made it turn out super awesome when I did this DIY!! Totally recommend them! 😃

Uk and Canada use a mix of imperial and metric system, usually it's metric in official, and imperial in colloquial contexts.

    I’m blown away! Gorgeous dupes! Sadly for me, I don’t have power tools - mainly because I don’t know how to use them. Still, watching this was inspiring.

    You can buy literally the EXACT plant stand in the first diy from anthro in Australia at Kmart (which is like Target) For $19AUS which is like $12US. WILD.

    They make galvanized-look grey spray paint if you wanted to make that bucket look exactly like the Pottery Barn one. Great job on all 3 projects!!

    You both did an amazing job! I love this series! *Would you consider doing a diy plant shelf for tiny ledge windowsill indoors, but want the space to put plants? Something permanent for homes, and also maybe something apartment friendly/free standing-no nails in wall?
    * It makes me want to learn carpentry as a hobby when I have no idea where to start.

    I have gotten a lot of great DIY ideas from you two. I'm glad you aren't stuck on Farmhouse de'cor! I like traditional and I'd love to see you do something Southwest! It's something a little different and haven't seen for years. Thanks for all the great ideas!!

    You know, I think I prefer your version for the last one way more than the West Elm on. I love how the square base of the pot brings in the sharp lines on the pot to mirror the sharp lines of the wood edges!

    Would never pay the retail price on any of the originals! LOVE all 3 of your versions better, even down to the succulent you chose. I also love that you would never have to deal with the rusting of the wrought iron with your bucket planter.
