I have one of those Greco's with the Maxons, its a 78 in black. I've never played a real vintage Les Paul or even an R8 or R9 but I thought that Greco was something special.. now I am convinced! haha.. But I bought mine a couple years ago on Reverb for about $1200. Its super light around 8lb and the loudest guitar unplugged that I own by far. Killer! Thanks for the video Ford I could watch shit like this all day long.
Right on dudes! Love it! Ford you are a badass, must be all that 3 mile island beer you drank in Pittsburg! After you playing all those sweet vintage guitars only once did you utter the words " This is amazing! " and your holding a Greco! I love all my MIJ 70's & 80's guitars! Thank you brothers for sharing! Peace
It’s awesome . I hear the difference on YT even. I have also had that experience with guitars that are just magic in the feel and inspiration. I played a Leroy Parnell model Les Paul with Ellis pups in it that was amazing and the best Paul I have every personally played. But save for some miracle this video and one like it are the closest I’ll ever get to it!! Oh yeah just so happens I was just listening to Buk’s Plexi soul so maybe I heard d it one there. Iconic guitar tone on the record!
So true. I thought the vintage thing was all BS until just over 10 years ago I tried a friend's old beat up '64 burst Strat w/rosewood neck (one of the last pre-CBS instruments) he had just acquired from a Christie's auction. A-B'd it with Fender Custom Shop '65 reissue. No comparison, not even close. Playability and sound and feel were just magically better with the old one. I could not believe it - amazing experience. He asked me if I wanted it for $8k, but I passed - dumbass me.
I've got a 78 Greco "Hamer Standard" with those same pickups. Brought it to Glaser's for some new frets and new nut. It shouldn't be a fantastic guitar, you can even see the layers of the pancake body; but it is. It sounds great and plays great and makes me look like I'm almost cool.
The fact Tom was like "nah dude, play it" speaks a lot....Not a lot of people with those collector guitars will let people touch them, let alone play them.
I traded a more expensive guitar for a friend's green Gretsch semi hollowbody guitar because I connected with it more. It always inspired me when I picked it up. Easiest trade ever. He even offered to give my trade back to years later. I said sell it and make some money.
I had to laugh at the "this one sounds like Christmas" comment. I've thought the same thing before when trying out neck pickups and thought I was being a nonsensical weirdo so I'm glad to find I'm not the only one😂
Right on. That was great. RUclips videos are to sonics as listening to a Pavarotti aria, sung into a tin can connected by a string. But, still…something comes through. Thanks!
It depends on what decade. If there was a row of new guitars and a row of old guitars in the seventies we all wanted new ones. Now it would probably be the opposite

The neck pickup on that 57’.. gawwwd 🤤 But the amp sounds incredible too- Looks like a deluxe. What volume number were yall playing it on? Good amount of drive but doesn’t seem like it was ear splitting loud
That’s some pretty cool gear but the players are pretty damn awesome too! Is that a P2P uncle Larry amp? Make me want to grab a guitar. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Ford ,you mentioned the neck profile was closer to a vintage Les Paul ,that model is supposed to have a slim taper neck like a lp classic, could you tell me more about the profile/thickness??...thanks
Looking forwarding to your Greco video tomorrow, I'm so intrigued with that guitar now ,and surprised by the tone etc..from my research it should be a EG700 , and those have maple necks! Is that one maple? I'm surprised you compared the neck to a vintage Gibson ,because that model is considered to be a slim taper neck similar yo a lp classic...
Ok, but is it possible to find an older guitar that’s a lemon, and a newer guitar that has “it”? I’ve played identical models of newer guitars, where one sucks, and the other one feels right. Maybe the aging process selects for better instruments? Since the guitar is a good one to begin with, it tends to stick around, and find appreciative owners, whereas if it sucks right off the line, it ends up getting modded, and chopped.
Must be nice to just hang out with a legend and have him set up your guitars. Great video!

When you're playing and tom is watching you have to play a weird chord. I've been working on one just in case
That's hilarious but 100% makes sense.
