This brought back memories. Funny enough, I had 4 FDs and they never left me on the side of the road. You have vacuum leaks. I would just get rid of the sequential system. Also be careful running an open down pipe and no tune. You’ll get boost spikes…probably why you have vacuum leaks ask me how I know. Zip tie all your vacuum hoses.
Brilliant to see a man who recognises the true worth and spirit of the RX-7 and who is determined on preservation - it will be worth it in the end. Brilliant video! Thank you.
As an original owner of a FD, I give you a hearty welcome to FD ownership! Now that you're going catless, you'll make more boost than the stock ECU is expecting and the A/F mix to the engine will get too lean resulting in motor rebuild time. Create a fix now for that before fixing your secondary turbo actuation. Ping Rotary Performance in Garland TX for assistance on this issue. Flush your coolant as you may have air in the system causing overheating (and the fluid may no longer be a healthy green). There are a few tricks to successfully changing the coolant including disconnecting a hose near the upper intake manifold and also a bolt in the engine block for draining coolant. I'd share some photos, but YT won't let me link them. Also check for correct operation of the fan relays too, plus a lower temp thermocouple mod too.
Yep, the car is definitely getting an ECU before we actually drive the car hard with the catless setup. I will 100% be flushing the coolant soon as well, I think thats a big contributor to our issue. Cool video! I’m not familiar with the RX7 platform but some cars have a slave cylinder reservoir which draws from the master cylinder reservoir and it’s much easier to flush it with a power bleeder otherwise you never get all the air bubbles out.
Oh snap! Heck yeah dude my 91 Accord is a money pit. Your knack for story telling kept this very engaging I enjoy your narration very much you have a lovely tone and cadence. Thank you for your continued content production
Pretty much all 90’s turbo JDM cars are a pain to work on and keep on the road. I had a 91 300zx TT and a 93 Mr2 turbo, both I had to remove the engine and replace all hoses and gaskets, and rebuilt the turbo’s. I still have PTSD from working on them. The Mr2 was not that bad but the 300zx TT was the straw that broke the camels back for me.
The temp gauge pointing above halfway is a worry. FD temp gauges were notorious for not being especially sensitive and thus pointing above halfway can meaning anything from "a little bit hot" to "this engine is hotter than the surface of the sun". Most FD groups recommend that if the temp gauge goes above halfway you stop straight away as an overheated engine can warp the rotor housing.
Man I loved my FD. I had my share of flakey vacuum hose connections and sold it before the warranty ran out but I've not yet found a car quite as lovely to drive as my red '93 FD. If Mazda put a reliable engine in that body it's be tough to beat.
Sounds like a vacuum leak which can affect the solenoid working properly for the 2nd turbo. People typically assume the turbo is bad, when it's either just a vacuum leak, or the solenoid actuator is bad. You should also tune it before you go full throttle again. Now you're running no cats and much more free flow exhaust, it will affect the tune and can cause damage to the engine.
replace all vaccum lines. replace all fuel lines including pulsation damper because a failed one with catch fire. replace all clutch hardline and soft lines.
This video gives me vibes of your old Supra build series. Also reminds me of my old FD, blown coolant seals make for a smoke screen that would make 007 jealous.
