  • Out riding on my Royal Enfield in the Cotswolds again, this time in Oxfordshire, near Charlbury, Witney and Woodstock.
Happy days again on two wheels as I ride out in search of Roman Britain. The excavated Roman Villa near the village of North Leigh is the focus of my itinerary, and I captured it on Video.
Ride along with me as I seek out the remains of a large and well-built Roman courtyard villa nestled in the delightful Evenlode valley.
The most important feature is a near complete mosaic floor, which I videoed in all its glory.
The site has a quiet, rural location surrounded by fields, not adjacent to any modern village, beside the River Evenlode, less than one mile from the course of Akeman Street, the well-known Roman road, linking Fosse Way to Watling Street.
“So back to the bike and those glorious Cotswold lanes…”
I'd welcome your company as I motorcycle back to Roman Britain.

The mosaic is actually in situ. It was found at this site but reset in 1929. The current building was built on the old roman foundations which can still be seen. The original building had a thatched roof. The site is part of the Blenheim Estate but now managed by English Heritage. The Mosaic Room is actually open today and tomorrow 28th May 2023 from 11am to 5pm.
