    I used Rust Oleum from a can with a brush to paint a couple of trailer fenders, came out great. Used with Rust Oleum catalyst. Hardens quicker.

    How well did this hold up? I'm doing one right now and I'm noticing the Rust-Oleum primer doesn't pass the thumbnail test. I thought I sanded it enough but maybe it needs more?

    I like Rust Oleum Lacquer. It is not flat, it is definitely glossy.

    Do you have to use primer? Can't just sand and paint? Thank you.

  • @jaysilverheals4445

    I am thinking of doing mine which is bigger but same type. However its allready read sort of sickening orange. I am going to use deeper candy apple red and not prime and hope for the best. Also i will seek out paint to not give the glossy finish. I want the almost wrinkled toolbox type finish. Cost becomes prohibitive to do a full race car type job on an old box buying multiple cans of paint. A person has to realize that if a box is red and they spray it red--the scratches will in fact be covered up. It is highly unlikely those exact spots with no primer will get scratched in the same spot exposing metal. Also as a machinist our toolboxes we actually dont bash up and scrape up and throw around.

  • @jimwiskus8862
    @jimwiskus8862 Год назад

    That looks great! I am curious, the Sunrise Red was enamel. I assumed doing a coat of lacquer over the enamel would raise the paint. Did I miss something??? Once again great job!

    Did you sand this down by hand? I just found a tool box that looks exactly like the one in your video. I'm super stoked about getting this thing to shine.

    hey, im restoring a old tool chest and i sanded down starting with a 40 grit flap disc and just finished with the 80 grit. Do you think its ready for primer? or should i take it to 120? i went to bare metal.

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  9 лет назад +2

      If the metal has tiny lines from the sanding I would cut it down with the 120. If the surface is nice and smooth and there are no visible lines or scratches in the metal from sanding then I would start with the primer. Just know any imperfections in the metal will show up in the final paint.

    Thanks for the video. Only issue I had was it could of been half as long if you didn't repeat yourself over and over again. I lost count on how many times you mentioned that the paint takes a long time to dry. I ended up skipping threw most of the video.

    That tool box paint was fine. Should have just left it as is. That rustoleum paint fades quick and becomes an ugly red, even before fading.

    Chances are that no name tool box was made oversees by people with slanted eyes. Just saying. Your project turned out pretty good. I think, Thanks for sharing your project video!
    I'm about to pick up a used three box Husky tool chest system that I am getting for free. The bottom cabinet is pretty rusty so I hope I can save it with a good sanding job followed by fresh paint inside and out like you did.
    The middle and top boxes are not too bad, but there is some rust on the lift out tool tray in the top box. I don't think any of these tool boxes had more than a single coat of high gloss paint on them when first manufactured, and probably not any protective clear coat at all. So the paint really wears out and rust can start pretty easily when the tool cabinets are stored in an unheated residential garage.
    I plan on putting at least two good coats of paint on the boxes plus one or two coats of protective clear coat. I did that on an ATV and it has held up pretty well despite getting hit by brush when out in the woods. One coat of paint only just isn't enough, I don't think, unless you keep the tools in a climate controlled environment.
    Prices some tool box systems like what I am getting for free at Home Depot last night and they ain't cheap! It would take at least $500 to get a set of boxes like what I will have so spending some time and money on paint doesn't bother me at all.
    BTW, a set of tool box liners to protect the paint finish from tools banging around is worth its' price.

      Stopping reading your comment after your racist remark about people with slanted eyes....holy moly dude.

    • @TrehanCreekOutdoors
      @TrehanCreekOutdoors 4 года назад +1

      @@jimparker7745 There is nothing inherently racist about describing people by their actual characteristics. For example, if your skin is black, then describing you as having black skin is not, in and of itself, a racist remark. It is also not derogatory, unless of course you think that stating facts is derogatory! It is merely a truthful and correct description.
      Thus if I describe people living in some other part of the world as having slanted eyes, when in fact they actually do have that characteristic, it isn't a racial remark. You may choose to take it that way but that's on you, not me.
      So as for me, I have no problem describing people with kinky hair as, well, kinky haired people! I don't dislike them for having kinky hair nor do I think that they are inferior in some manner. Same thing for slanty eyed people. I don't consider it a negative feature. Most likely they probably have better vison than I do!
      It's like having big ears. If you have them, then you have them. May make you look freaky or maybe it doesn't but appearance has nothing to do with the validity of the person. So please don't label truthful statements about a person's appearance as a racist remark. That's insulting me as there is no prejudice against anyone or antagonistic attitude on my part toward anyone based upon their appearance.
      I personally don't care to live in a politically correct world as that leads to contorted efforts not to use terms which otherwise make perfect sense to use but which might offend someone. For instance, I don't have a problem calling the lid over the sewer in my street a "manhole" cover. Somehow calling it a "person hole cover" just doesn't do much for me.
      As for the overall quality of goods made in other parts of the world, there are plenty of things made by slanty eyed people which are excellent world class products. Tool boxes, in my opinion, are not customarily one of them however.
