When all is said and done, you will have learned the basics of setting up, shooting, and editing a green screen video.
1. Lighting
When filming green screen, lighting is the most important aspect. To get the cleanest result you have to light the green screen nice and evenly. If you don’t light it evenly, it will create different shades of green. If you have different shades of green, you will not be able to fully key it out, meaning you won’t fully remove the green screen. If the the light on the green screen isn’t even it will result in different shades of green, and those shades will not be removed because you can only remove one shade of green.
2. Creating Separation / Avoiding Spill
Make sure there is some sort of separation between your subject and green screen. When it comes to placing the subject in front of the green screen, they shouldn't be too close. You don’t want them to be casting a shadow on the green screen, or be SO close that the reflection of the green spills onto your subject. Spill is caused by the light bouncing the green light onto your subject.
3. Avoid the color Green
This concept, even though it sounds obvious, is often forgotten. But when filming green screen, your subject shouldn’t be green or wear the color green!! If your subject is wearing green or if there are any props, foreground / background elements that are green, They will be keyed out when you key out the background.
No matter what method, software, or camera you use for green screen, I always go over these 3 concepts before pressing record. There have been times where I forgot one or two of these concepts, and did not shoot it properly, and if it's not shot properly, it's not going to key well. Alright, now let’s get started.
Cheapest Options: Poster Board & Shooting Outside
If you have never done green screen before, I suggest you get the cheapest option of green screen: poster board. Why, because it's cheap and easy to get! I got this from the dollar store, for less than a dollar.
But, the downside to poster board is that its can get messed up easily - you want to keep it in pristine condition because folds, tears, or if any of the color comes off can make the surface uneven. Which will result in the color of the poster board becoming uneven. When it comes to lighting poster board, or green screen in general, the easiest way is to go outside! The best type of day to film outside is during an overcast day. Reason is, there wont be super harsh shadows and the light will be the very even on both your subject and green screen. If it isn’t overcast, filming in a decent area of shade will do as well.
Editing
Once we got our footage let me show you how to edit this in Filmora. Make sure to have some footage to key into the green screen - anything will really do - but we’ll pick some landscape footage. After you have started up filmora, select Full Feature Mode and then proceed to import the background videos and Green Screen footage to the media library. Drag and drop the Green Screen video clip to the editor's Picture in Picture track, and put the image you want behind the green screen clip in the track below it. Right click the clip in the timeline and select the Green Screen option. The Picture in Picture window will pop up, and this is where you can preview your clip and key out certain colors. Before picking what color to key out, find a good frame to work from. On the right of this PIP window is a preview window. This is where we can see the edits we’re making. So to find a fram, lets use the scrubber at the bottom to find a frame.
Now, Check the "Make parts of the clip transparent" box. With the mouse, let's use the picker tool and select the color I want to key out, so in our case: green. Now, drag the slider to adjust the Intensity Level. As you can tell, this slider will affect the transparency your clip. Lets play back our changes to see how it looks. Make sure you keep an eye on your subject in front of your green screen, you may notice that some of your subject is keyed out them out, if they are you
Well that's how to shoot and edit Green Screen in filmora. I just want you to know that Green Screen isn’t limited to just backgrounds or the color green. Green is the standard because it doesn’t match any natural skin tone or hair color. You can technically use any color, but make sure your subject isn’t wearing it or that the color you’re keying out isn’t in the background/foreground or any ground of your image either. Hope this helped you guys out and keep making videos! Don’t forget to subscribe, like, and comment! Tell us what you want to green screen. See ya next time.
I’ve been using filmora for almost a year now. I’m VERY pleased with how the program works and it really does make your videos look better and more professional. So if your looking for a nice cheap editor this is the way to go! It’s not premier pro edits but it’s REALLY GOOD for starters or if your on a budget.
Been requesting this video for ages. Thanks alot
2 days ago I didn't even know what Filmora was, today I helped my daughter with video editing and green screen/ chroma key editing. Thank you!
Another great tutorial. Your team has helped me so much on my channel. Thank you. Keep crushing it👊
Filmora is the best video editing software because it’s made for people not profit. Power-on and thank you for being you.
Is what youre saying true?
thank you, you are one of the only video i have seen that explain how to do green screen in the editing
Ahh dope!! I need to try this one ASAP! George funny af. 😂
Amazing how Filmora has changed in 2 years!
Thank You So Much
Especially for the part of " using a computer or tv screen as green screen,"
I will definitely try that option a.s.a.p.
Thank you guys 👍 A whole new world opens up to me by your help and clear information!!!
Love your explaining everything! Thanks so much!
Just brought filmora pro did my first video must say I love it
The introduction was very helpful, thanks!
Thanks man for showing me how it’s done ✅ ! One of a kind video 👌
Hi Filmora! I really love your videos and tutorials! Can you please add a tutorial on how to put celphone/chat conversations? Is this an available feature?
Very helpfull video, thank you eo much
I wish Filmora would add some more advanced features for keying a green screen. To key successful in Filmora your screen needs to be near perfect for your video to look good.
For videos I use green screens in, I have to use a different program to key my screen, then bring my keyed video into Filmora to do my video editing.
Fun With The Bugs yes bro like motion tracking ,keylight .,masking etc
Filmora Video Editor wow please consider it gentleman!!!
This helped me with the panzoid intro green screen problem
could you do a video of how to outline glow a person or subject on filmora
Thanks, I was having problem with my green screen techniques. I was too close to the screen and not having proper lighting too.
Thanks so much! I really like your editor
Thank you so much! i've learned a lot
Great tutorial. Love working with Filmora
Very helpful, I suggest anyone to buy this program super easy to use and has some awesome effects / editing tools!
I just want to say... I downloaded all the free extra packs and I love them! You put so much work in something that was free! Good job Fillmora! And could you add motion tracking? And some more add-ons like glasses or something like that?
Filmora Video Editor yay!
Thank you for your awesome tips and expert advise. Much appreciated the great share.
thanks for the video. Can you please explain how to remove blinks of light on my lenses (I got optical lenses in frames) in the video
Hello Matt, thanks for the great videos to educate us
I am using an old 13" MacBook Pro i7 2012 with 16MB Ram, I have recently recorded a video on 1280x720 and edited it in Filmora 9, created a few green screen animated videos with text and graphics in the keynote app, exported with the same 1280x720 resolution, imported and used as an overlay on the recorded video, unfortunately, no matter what I do the text and graphics keep showing a fine grey blurry edge, I have tried tweaking all the settings in chroma key panel but no luck, can you please advise how to overcome this problem, thanks
God bless you massively, you are really a teacher, I will follow you forever..🌷🌷🌷
Very helpful...to add to this, is it possible to layer what is in the background to have multiple images replacing the green screen? I'm going for a driving effect and I have street footage, but I'd also like to add people and other nonsense within the street, if that makes sense. Essentially I'm trying to make a homemade version of the intro sequence to the Naked Gun movie
Finally someone who can really explain it simple and easy, thanks for explaining it. Gonna use it soon!!
Thanks the intro helped me lol
My question is in the demo. I just downloaded 9 and I wanted to see what it was like before I decided to buy.
This was so simple in this version. I'm trying out version 9 and I still haven't been able to import an animated gif with a white background and make that white transparent. Easy to do in version 8 as you show. That same method works for the animated gifs but now I'm still searching trying to find out how to duplicate this functionality in version 9
Thank you so much for this tutorial it's going to be very helpful for my RUclips channel
awesome job! Its always nice to learn more about the editing software can do :)
Very helpful video, nice explanation. thanks. keep posting videos
Love this software, awsome and soo easy to use unlike adobe after effects...the vfx is litteraly done for you, just add it to the ĺ vfx on filmora?...this is one awsome software...and very powerful...also this video was really cool too.thank u...
you saved my youtube career seriously thank you
great lessons green screen is important in all project u want make i love this lessons
2018:"I love being outside"
Me: I wonder how 2020 is treating you
ONE more useful video from FILMORA. 🤗👍
Great tutorial like always😀 thank you ♡
Thanks filmora team...u r awesome
Thank you been waiting for this
If only we could apply the transition to the videos within the secondary storyline instead of just animation then it would be much more powerful.
Suggestions for filmora to have in some point in time
I hope most of these suggestions make it in to filmora one day
This list of suggestions is with a doubt everything people want. This will also keep people from leaving this software because these suggestions will cover all of beginners needs and maybe advanced editors.
Suggestions
-make the software super strong so it can handle lots of things and effects on the time line without freezes.
-button to set preview window resolution(480p to 1080p or 4k) (button next to time on time line)
-default layout button like vegas pro cause if we ever expand the layout or something and we want it back to how it originally was than this is a good feature.
-add trimmer(so when we put media in the media place we should be able to right click on a clip and there should be a trimmer option then we click on that and then it takes us to a trimmer for the clip and then we setup the in and out point then press ok and then we've just trimmed a clip before putting it in the time line so its ready.)
-markers(should be able to put text next to them)
-add another tab in advanced color tunning.Right now there is 2, presets and adjust. Add another which which would be called whatever you guys want and that tab for more advanced color tunning but with a different look and different options.
-adjust tilt shift because you can only do it up and down and side to side. Put it to where we can also resize the box to tilft shift something specific.
-add a couple more split screen options
-the option to adjust the border size on split screens
-add the option to bring clips from time line into split screen
-add a couple more text animations
-add a couple more pip track animations(for main track to)
-add a couple more colors in sample colors
-add more transitions
-add more popular sound effects that people use in montages, or funny moments.
-the option to change the speed of pip track animations and text animations
-echo audio effect(where there's an echo in the voice of the person who is speaking for both main track and pip track) (Called reverb in other softwares)
-give the advanced audio mixer a dark skin instead of the light blue theme and make the audio editing more professional
-the option to expand the audio like in premiere(but only a little)
-the option to change opacity of clip
-the ability to fully customize short cuts
-button to undo automatic snapping of clips(so there will be a blank space) (Applies for main track only)
-the option to resize a effect window like for example advanced color tunning,go to corner and resize it to make it smaller or larger like vegas pro(also for pip track effects windows to like green screen.)
-when we resize effects windows like advanced color tunning or audio mixer or cropping we should be able snap it to the media place thing like vegas pro so it we'll take it up and it won't be in the time line way.
-advanced color tunning for pip track
-the option to fade in and out of filters that take up the whole screen like black and white filter
-the option to put filters and overlays on pip track. (maybe by going to add new track to put in under pip track.
-cropping for pip track
-power tool for pip track
-put a speed bar on main track for cropping to change how fast or slow the pan & zoom goes
-organize effects between filters and overlays( make sure effects are in the right effects tab between filters and overlays.
-add the option for 10 text tracks
-add text shake option
-make the time line so we can move the main track from the the beginning of the time line like vegas pro and like we can do with the audio and other tracks in filmora
-the ability to move on the cursor by clicking somewhere on the software like vegas pro
-the option to move a pip track clip to the main track and option to move main track clip to pip track
-the option to move clips around in the media place
-3d text editing(along with you know 3d video editing not sure what it is called)
-free mask(doesn't have to be super professional)
-default text option in text/credit where text just pops in and out
-make the record option 60fps and get rid of fimora scr
-get ride of the other modes and only have full feature mode
-take out subscription mode it should be a option for effects not completely needed for effects
-if need more place to put buttons for effects and stuff, can put buttons at bottom of software like vegas pro
-make rendering as fast as a professional softwares rendering or in general as fast as possible
-motion tracking and key framing should be one of the last things added to make sure you guys perfect it. With these other effects i just suggested filmora will be a pretty good video editor without them. Since this is a beginners software all the advanced features I suggested don't have to be complete like a professional software, there could be cons where you can't do as much stuff like you would be able to do in a professional software. Don't know about wondershare id. Very good software but even better with my suggestions. It would be comparable to vegas pro, but easier to use, cheaper, and and has a lot of options but not as much as vegas. Filmora is best software for youtubers. Also to make this software use able make sure to keep fixing any sort of lag or sync issues so this software can stay use able.

I think this list was Inspired from Sony Vegas Pro!😜
Filmora Video Editor you should also add the effect where you can motion track in items on the b roll
Meeta Joshi Arts & Crafts hahaha 😂🤣😂
This is a good idea
Well, yes some but not all. Not totally trying to copy Vegas Pro exactly. Justing putting ideas on the table that I think would be cool features for filmora.
I have been trying to do this without a green screen.
Very nice video you have explained some points which no body has done on you tube

Hi can you show me how to to text flip annimations transition in Filmora
I have question: How to make a movie soundtrack with filmora? Thanks you 😊
Out of curiosity, why do you use a black image for the main track when green screening a computer monitor? From my experience, this doesnt seem neccesary as I use green screen all the time and usually dont add anything there.
Very useful information. Thanks
One question- if i have shoot more than two video clips in green screen. So how can i remove green screen. Should i join them and export and then remove at once or need to remove green screen from each clip individually? Pls tell me the easy way to remove green screen from.mire than two video clips at once. All all the part of single project. Pls reply
HI guys, thanks for this amazingly easy software, i am using Filmora9, but i am having a problem and that is i cant export any file i edit because when i export my white page pops up. So i hope you will find a solution to my problem. By the way, i am in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Hi Filmora
May I know what version of Filmora you're using? Because mine, doesn't have mask.

When are you gunna add. Motion tracking and static 3d text positioning.?
great tutorial. just learning from it.
Is a Mac or PC better to use? What about GPU...does one need a "gaming" type of GPU & CPU???
Very Helpful Video Thanks Sir
This looks different to what I have? Idont have the blue pop up window or pictuure in picture? Is this a older version or what am I doing wrong My version is 9.2? I also have Pro but that just confused the crap out of me after using 9.
Thanks...in nutshell told many things...all about a studio... :)
When I right click on the video clip I can find Green Screen, however, the option to make the video transparent is not anywhere in the choices. my options are Transform, Compositing, Stabilization, Chroma Key, Lens Correction, Auto Enhance, and Drop Shadow. I do not see "make the video transparent" under any of those tab choices.
yea
There are more videos on youtube... Check them out...
Thanks
thanks Bro.....................i searched a lot to know how to work Properly with Green screen..my search ended here
Thank you friend very nice teaching.
now there is also color match which will help to bring some originality to the footage
I have an suqestion. Can you make a zoom effect for filmora but not zooming that already is there I mean zoom effect where we can zoom how we want not like when we zooming and zoom going in left or right corner up or down.Something like in videopad.
Will you do a tutorial on how to do a multi-angle shot video of the same subject speaking something. Hope you guys listen.
Is there a place I can submit a request for a video demonstration of a technique? My desire is to have a snapshot of a frame at a point in my video with a camera sound and animate the frame as if I was taking a photo with a camera. Does that make sense?
This video is cool and all, but what I want is to export a GIF with no background. Is there any way to do that? All the ones I've exported have a black background.
Is there a way to replace a certain colour WITH a video? so that if they camera is moving around or something the video will stay in one place

Hey Filmora, if I purchase 1PC licence... and decided I wanted to add another PC, can I upgrade my licence or would I have to purchase another licence? Also if I purchase a licence for one PC and something happens to that PC, and I purchase another one, will I still be able to use the licence, or again purchase another one?
