My artist is part of a collective here in Latin America called Cuerpxs en Red who work towards creating safe spaces for women, LGBTQ+, people of color, and different shapes and sizes. I'm so happy to work with her, as a trans person it has made me feel safe from the very beginning knowing these spaces exist and are becoming more and more prevalent in the tattoo community.

Same! I love body mods but my phobia of needles, social anxiety, and general distrust of people makes me really scared to get tatted. Glad to see queer, neurodivergent, disabled, trauma-informed, etc studios starting to open up in more locations.

When I decide to get tattoos, I’m definitely going to one of these places. The people there just seem so kind and respectful to folks from all walks of life, it’s really heartwarming. I know some people think these places or the people that go to them are “too sensitive” but the way I see it, they’re just making the tattoo industry more accessible for people who didn’t feel welcome before.

Anyone against Safe and Inclusive tattoo studios just wants to continue offering bad customer service without having to actively compete with shops that offer good customer service.

These nasty men that tell people to "square up" and "it's part of the tattoo-culture" is the reason why we need these safe space tattoo parlours... I've only ever been tattooed by women, and I've always had a positive experience, so I'm lucky. Ever since I found out about Pastle Palace I've wanted to get tattooed by them. I'll probably get on a plane to England and make an entire vacation out of simply wanting a tattoo by them.

I just went to a studio in Pittsburgh last month called PMA tattoo. It stands for positive mental attitude and it was amazing. It's woman owned and focuses on making clients feel safe and comfortable. My friend even later on got an appointment with the same artist. Highly recommend if anyone is in the Pittsburgh area.

    I love love love this!
I run my piercing room in a similar manner, everyone is welcome. I will always make accommodations for people. I have many longer term clients who have severe anxiety and panic attacks. So I always work with them on how we can make them feel safe and comfortable. Essentially I want everyone that comes through my door to leave happy and proud of what they accomplished! And I’m always so proud of them and tell them so.
I have some clients who are neurodivergent and have worked with them towards achieving their goals of getting a piercing. Things like booking a pre appointment to meet me and see the room the week before, taking breaks and creating a safe space for them. It takes such little effort to make those accommodations and it breaks my heart that so many people won’t.
I love the way the new age of tattooing and piercing is going. I’m so here for it! 🖤🖤🖤

Okay, but how cool (albeit complicated) would it be to do a tattoo bracket by region or something? People suggest their favorite shops in an area, potatoes vote on FB or something to nominate the top 10 in each region, and then poor Lauren has to decide who wins based on portfolio in a bracket style matchup 😅

  • @HunterLvyiXIII
    @HunterLvyiXIII 2 года назад +8

Ahh! Lauren thank you so much for doing a video on this! I always thought you just had to try your best to narrow down your options as good as you can since tattoo shops can range from pretty yikes to decent to pretty good; and the atmosphere is a big part of that.
It's sad so many people feel they need to put up with bull (or even just indifference) just to get great ink. But to find out that there are places where the goal is to be chill and accepting while doing great work? My neurodivergent, bi, genderfluid, not-completely-mayonaise self needed this.
When I looked up safe space shops and saw there's one only an hour away? I squealed. I'm so happy this is a thing and that there's one near me! Nobody should have to put up with bull, indifference, or the immense emotional labor just to be treated like a human in a place where you're spending your money. Thanks again Lauren!

I wish I knew places like these existed sooner. I wish I knew there were "specialties" one of my newer tattoos I got the artist was working on it and said "were you playing the skin violin" as he WAS working over (selfharm) scars I was surprised "Ive never heard that" I told him. Needless to say ive not gone back. It's not just about the artistic ability but emotional social ability as well. ♡

Ugh I *hate* those kind of comments. I went to an NHS plastic surgeon recently to get scar reduction surgery and the main surgeon made the "you're obviously right handed" joke. Later, at a checkup after the surgery, I had a nurse basically say I had no hope with reduction surgery and that tattoos are the only way to go (despite the fact she didnt have any herself). I'm planning to eventually get tattoos over/around the scars but I need some of them reducing first. I mean, I understand making light of a bad situation, but not from professionals, and not when its about such an emotional type of scar. Its just disaapointing to hear.

@@saskia9720 oh my god. Wtf is it with ppl... (my siblings would say ' boys aren't going to like that' ) The hell did I care. The comments are so dismissive of ppls pain. To it being reduced by ppl in power, because you are going to ppl for advice and they have the "power" in the moment is UGH.. I hope you find resolution.

@@gloriazaragoza3349 Thank you. Personally I think some professionals just don't understand how private and emotional scars can be. I've had professionals make jokes about my foot shape, and I'm fine with that because I was born with them, but I made my scars in the worst moments of my life, and I think professionals can often forget that emotional side to them, and just treat them like any other scar/injury. It sucks, but at least they're helping, albeit it slightly rudely. I hope you're doing well too.

Omg went to a tattoo place this week called safe space. She does spiritual tattoo ceremonies. I am sooo inlove with my tattoo and wish I could share it here. I got psoriasis got 1 tattoo before that healed good but I always get shy and a bit afraid to get tattoos. She was really nice! Asking questions about my skin for the placement. Could also always come back to add dotwork at places she avoided. (Was only one dot) or to rework the tattoo. Safe Space tattoo Rotterdam! 😊

The people who take issue with this really are just babies who don’t like when something is not for them/about them, like they aren’t the demographic for this kind of studio and no one is forcing them to go there, bro just go to a different studio if you don’t like this kind of thing 🙄 I have only been tattooed by female and non binary artists in recent years and I have found it such a better experience for me over the tattoos I had done by men when I was much younger. Being able to communicate well and comfortably with your artist really does make a difference to the outcome of the tattoo and I have never felt that my preference has compromised the quality of the work I have received it has always been amazing. I highly recommend Rachel Baldwin at bold as brass tattoo in Liverpool and Kelpie bat at tollcross tattoo club in Edinburgh as individual artists :) for shops I recommend den of iniquity in Edinburgh and the studio tattoo in Glasgow :)

I definitely want to go to Pastel Palace and get tattooed by Samantha Daisy whenever I visit the UK next (assuming it's safe and all that). Their work is beautiful!
Comfort with an artist is incredibly important to me, which is why I tend to go to the same one over and over, and have now found a second one I'm very comfortable with as well.

You should turn this in a small series! In each episode you could suggest different safe studios located in a different country! I would love it for sure!❤️
I come from Milan, Italy, and I suggest you Sopra Le Righe Tattoo located in Milan. You can choose between different artists who provide tattoos, piercings and permanent make up. Rita, the owner, is a woman, a member of the LGBTQAI+ Community and a feminist, she tattooed a friend of mine and I’m looking forward to get a piece from her too! One thing I really love is they always do a Pride walk-in weekend in June, all the artists draw a ton of special price flashes you can choose from! It might not be as fancy as the other studios you talked about but everyone is nice and welcoming and you can really feel safe and accepted here, which in Italy could be hard

I'm disabled and chronically ill, being tattooed by Hettie has been my best experience yet (and I have 15+ big tattoos). I'm likely the only one here with this issue, but since this is a video about safe spaces, I wanted to say this in case anyone has a similar issue. Taxidermy is a HUGE anxiety trigger for me (also triggers some depression symptoms). I didn't check out every shop mentioned in this video, but I looked at Honey Wraith's Instagram since I'm in the states and that studio and its aesthetic seem lovely! It does have taxidermy though. This isn't a dig against the studio or the artists. The shop seems amazing otherwise. I also don't expect most people to consider it because I don't think it's a common trigger or phobia. I know taxidermy is super popular in the tattoo and alternative community, so I just try to see if it's in a studio before I follow their account or book an appointment.
Lauren, I absolutely love your videos, and I think this is a fantastic video idea. If you find out about more safe space tattoo studios, I'd love to see more videos like this! No bad feelings. I appreciate how much you work to create a safe space here. Please keep up the good work and continue being awesome!

I've been tattooed in a bunch of places, some pretty old school and/or crummy. I just went with it and made the most of the experience. But now I've found Underground in Stevenage (Hertfordshire, England) I don't want to go anywhere else. It's extremely professional, very kind and empowering people and just an easy and fun environment, plus the artists are fantastic.
Being autistic I can have a tough time socializing which is important when you're sitting for hours with a person, not to mention the added stress of being tattooed, but it's a non-issue there. I don't think they even realise what a good job they do on that front. Highly recommend if you're in the area.

TLDR(scheduled and appointment with artist far away through third party, things happen in between appointments causing me to reschedule, miscommunication causes me to not reschedule the way he wants, which leads to artist possibly venting about it through insta) So last year in one of your videos I saw a tattoo artist I really wanted to get tattooed by I finally got the opportunity to schedule an appointment with him in December (I’m not going to say who it is because I don’t want any trouble). It felt kinda not very personable when I emailed him I received an automated email and when I called on the phone to schedule it was through a woman acting as a secretary I guess. His tattoo studio is 8 hours away so I was going treat it like a mini vacation and stay for the weekend. However after I scheduled my appointment, just before Christmas, I was let go from my job. My appointment was scheduled for yesterday and I thought there was a chance I could find another job before the appointment but no luck. That and the fact that I was having trouble getting my medication and my mental health struggling getting over my anxiety to call back and reschedule. (I thought) I was told over the phone to call two days before the appointment if I had to reschedule. I called back towards the end of the day on Thursday and I think it was the same lady who answered before and told her I apologized but I had to reschedule, she said it was fine but I would to pay the 60 dollar deposit again because I was supposed to call three days before hand. I was supper understanding and apologized again and explained the whole to day thing. She said it was so he would have to days to fill that time slot which I get. I rescheduled for April and I resent the money with an apology at the bottom and I thought that was the end of it.
However yesterday night I saw on his Instagram story a message saying that if your going to schedule and appointment with him you should show up to your appointment and now before hand if you can make the trip, finishing at the bottom with something like: it’s not that much to ask.
I don’t know if I sound crazy or not, but it felt like passive aggression directed at me. At first I felt like I deserved it but then I kinda got frustrated and started crying because it’s like dude just fucking say it to my face but at the same time of course he wouldn’t say it to my face because not once has this guys even said anything to me and everything was done through third party. He’s acting like I didn’t even bother to cancel and not showed up and when I scheduled the appointment I didn’t know I would lose my job, shit happens and I apologized like three times and payed 60 dollars. This is all for an appointment that was at most going to last an hour and a half, and cost 180 dollars which you could technically argue I paid 2/3 of already.
Idk it kinda has soured the experience for me a little bit and it kinda makes me nervous about how he’s going to treat me when I get it. I get he’s frustrated I really do but this feels a little unfair to a small degree and I think it’s really shown me what I want in a tattoo artist and who I want to be as an artist if I ever become one.
I’m sorry this whole thing is long even tldr is long but please I don’t want any hate directed at me or anyone else involved I post this because I don’t really have anybody to vent to about it

That's a bad experience and the timing is a little sus I agree, honestly I don't think that artists should be posting their policies on sm or even venting about client issues and for the latter they definitely shouldn't use their professional account. Idk, from what I've read here he sounds a little petty. I hope you were able to find a (good) job soon after as well!

I've been to Pastel Palace twice now as it's local enough to be within walking distance of me 😂 they're absolutely delightful. If I didn't have a sleeve to finish elsewhere I don't think I would go anywhere else for tattoos and piercings. They're amazing.
Honestly the only issue with the studio is that there is no parking nearby, so that's something to take into account if you want to visit.

I love the name Black Sheep Tattoo. It took me a second but then it came to me. The odd or different person in a family is always called the black sheep of the family. If you don’t think the same or live an alternate lifestyle or for whatever reason if you’re different than the majority of your family you are considered the black sheep. This makes me think that this tattoo studio would be accepting of everyone and anyone who is different. How special is that? I have a great tattoo artist but if I didn’t I would definitely look for shops like these. I’ve had five major abdominal surgeries which have left me with an ileostomy ( similar to a colostomy) and I would definitely be a bit intimidated if I wanted a tattoo on my abdomen as it would feel very awkward. Even when I’ve had to go for ultrasounds I always tell the person upfront so as not to shock them. I know this is a little TMI but I don’t mind sharing and actually am very confident considering. Lauren thanks for sharing with us.🥰

Being a safe space and accepting tattoo artist just makes business SENSE. If you make your client comfortable and happy, they COME BACK, rather than turning them off tattoos and the process for life. Repeat business, opening up to more clients is the way forward for the industry.

hi i ve been binging your videos for the past week... love them by the way. Was wondering if you could do a video either reacting to stick and poke tattoos ( professional ones not at home sketch ones) or maybe an informational video about professionally done stick and poke.
I personally have 4 tattoos and they re all linework. 3 were done by stick and poke professionally and the other one was done by machine.

I love my tattoos and don't mind the traditional shops, but I would 100% go to a Safe Studio to support their cause instead of the regular tattoo parlors in my area. Not everyone can handle the intensity of a tattoo all at once, if it's mental, physical, psychological, etc everyone has a different comfort level

I went today to get a tattoo with a different artist. Let me just say I will never go to that artist or shop ever again. I got my inner lip tattoo and he grabbed me and pulled me closer to him with out even giving me a heads up and someone who been though things I do not being like touch without my knowledge or consent. You could tell I was not comfortable with it and he rolled his eyes at me and said you are getting a tattoo I have to touch you. Also he was a real jerk about what I wanted to get. This is my third tattoo and my first two have been amazing. I feel that as a tattoo Artist you should and try to make the client feel comfortable as much as possible.

I think it's cool beause tattoo/piercing shops still have some bad rep amongst people who are not familiar with it.Hopefully it will help change minds.
I'm thinking people getting pierced, or getting their children pierced at a jewelry shop rather than with a proper piercer because they think tattoo studios are scary and not safe.
