    They were actually asking for a $1.99 a month not 8.99. it didn't get shut down 24 hours later it was 72 hours. I was using it. Loving the app. The regular beeper continued to work and then stopped. Both are very unstable now. I think Apple is just got them fully on the radar and every time they see somebody coming from an Android phone, phone number or maybe the email addresses of the users. They're just blocking it actively even though we those users very likely have an iOS device or a Mac to be able to use iMessage legitimately until Apple adopts RCS apps like this are going to continue to exist. Sending between Android and iPhones is inherently insecure and anyone over the internet could conceivably intercepting read all the data
    The other problem is SMS has very restrictive file. Sizes of sending photos and video from an iPhone to an Android phone often causes the video to run at less than ideal resolution and frame rates. Photos are generally compressed and don't look as good once they're sent from an iPhone to an Android phone, RCS fixes this and Apple could easily implement it much sooner if they hadn't sandboxed all their apps into the operating system. That way they could attach it to the app store as an update. And support RCS very quickly. Knowing apple though, they will probably spend 6 months researching how they want to implement it before they actually implement it and then they will restrict the number of phones that can get it to one or two years back to force people to upgrade to the new phones. That's the Apple way. Cut off features that would work on older phones but they won't to force you to upgrade

The coffee ☕️ message is so insulting especially since I’m doing my very best at this point but a cup of coffee would help 😅.

    Open source software actually has very good security, because security vulnerabilities can be detected and fixed quickly by the community, and since the source code is open, users can see how the software works and what data it collects. This is one of the reasons why Linux has always been very secure. Android, on the other hand, is actually running a fair amount of closed code, because of what phone makers, carriers and Google have done to the operating system.

      Beeper mini subscription was $1.99/MO after free trial and they removed the fee until they get it working reliably. It's not illegal because by law you are able to reverse engineer apps for interoperability. The main reason people don't like green bubbles is because of the fact that you can't send high quality pictures or videos over sms/mms. It might be a little bit of inaccurate information but it's enough to completely change someone's opinion of the topic.

    • @TechOdyssey
      @TechOdyssey 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@mauricerohrer you can’t say it’s not illegal. There is a presumption based on the reversed engineering exception for interoperability that may offer some protection but that will need to be determined - see if Apple sues. The price I wasn’t aware of. $1.99 is more fair, but still doesn’t change the basis for the message or arguments in the conversation.

  • @moomin7461

    I think the green bubble/blue bubble thing is only an issue for teenagers, who like to pick on other kids who have an android phone, calling them poor, which makes them feel superior, even though the iPhone was probably paid for by the bank of mommy and daddy.

    Great podcast. Google’s own native default app is SMS! Seriously? Google COULD have built an app to protect the privacy of their users but because they could not monetize it they didn’t care. I think Beeper counted on public animosity towards Apple to carry them. Beeper underestimated the righteous indignation many people felt against what they viewed as stealing.
    I’ve always heard that GUI was one of those tech oddities that no company could figure out what to do with. It was open source and sitting out there for years UNTIL Apple came up with a use. It’s kinda an Apple specialty, like ARM. It was considered a weak, useless chip for today’s powerful advanced devices… until Apple

    • @TechOdyssey
      @TechOdyssey 7 месяцев назад +2

      The method of reverse engineering wasn’t the point of the conversation. It was about what people want iMessage on Android and the lengths that Beeper and customers are going through to get Apple services but don’t want an iPhone - with some debate on the process.

      For those not in the know:
      Thanks to Beeper Mini, iPhone users texting to Android users and vice versa now enjoy end to end encryption (E2EE) along with some of the convenience features of iMessage. Apple's preference is that their own freaking user base communicate the old-fashioned way- completely without protection for all the world to see!
      That the hosts don't even touch on this is plain slimy.

    Beeper mini used the iMessage encryption protocol that was reverse engineered from a security researcher. So what they did was definitely wrong. Signal was never breached either. The Signal Protocol is still a messaging gold standard, Signal themselves never had the breach.

      Signal had 1,200 accounts that were hacked last year. Apparently yes, the entire platform wasn’t compromised. However, it’s not entirely incorrect to say it was “hacked”. Glad to hear it’s still working well and secured. 👍🏻
