      Scott Garner in most states if you build something with your own hands that has turn signals, headlights, brake lights, seat belts, and can go fast enough then it can be registered as a kit car, and in states with emissions you have to pass the emissions tests. Love your passion. My 944 developed a head gasket leak so I thought it was a good time to learn how to rebuild engines. While not nearly as difficult as what you've done here, it just goes to show you that if you have the time and resources, you can do just about anything these days. At 56, it's probably a little late for me to build my own car, but it is something that gnaws at me, especially when I see people like you that go for it and do it. Keep it up. I'll be 70 in April, I quit racing stock cars 15 years ago and got into BMW motorcycles. I tend to want to race everyone in the twistys, the Tail of the Dragon is visited about twice a summer. I still run my auto diagnostic and electrical repair shop. I just bought a 97 Miata from the 60ish lady who bought it new. My dog rides the bike with me, but we haven't been on the bike since I bought the Miata. It's needed some work, but basically is a sound car, and man it handles. It's been so long since I've driven a "real sports car". Your project car is really quite nice, I don't do big projects any more, never did really like them. You have a lot of talent and skills. As far as the crankcase pressure goes, you can use the exhaust to pull it into a "vacuum", there's power in a low pressure sump. Super late models use the dry sump pump to do it, or some use a belt driven vacuum pump to pull the pressure down. Smokey said the rings seal better, and there's less windage, oil can't stay suspended as much. The power trick was discovered by accident by the fellow who was taking care of the Buick V6 Indy engines. An engine showed up for refreshment with the breather system sealed and they dyno tested it not knowing it was sealed prior to building, and it made too much hp. They moved it to another dyno and it still made too much power. Anyway have fun and stay safe.

      The entry level formula classes are like this, but with a carbon monocoque!
      I had the privilege to get a race track training (on the Oschersleben DTM track in Germany) with Formula BMW cars and they where somewhat similar to this, but with a motorcycle race engine that revs to 12.000 or so.
      It felt so amazing and the power/weight ratio was enough to propel it in under 3 seconds to 100kmh but the top speed isn’t too dangerously fast.
      It was amazing for me as a mediocre track day driver and not too much to handle.
      The sequential transmission with a clutch was a bit new at the beginning, even if I’m used to manual gearboxes, but once you learned to shift it above 8k without the need for clutching it became second nature.
      Everybody who has the chance to get into a open wheel single seater should definitely use it, it’s like no car you’ve ever driven before.
      All the high power BMW M4 and M5s I’ve driven felt boring and cumbersome compared to this, even if they had 600+ hp compared to the 190 or so hp of the formula car.
      And once you get above a certain corner speed and feel the wings do their work, it’s insane!
      It feels like you’re driving on train tracks!
      I’ve never experienced so much grip in my entire life!

      Much of the safety improvements in F1 have to do with improved track and runoff areas. Also better corner workers.
      Some of the safety features could be easily integrated into a throwback F1 car. Fuel cells, fire extinguishers.
      No wings or ground effects to slow down the cars.
      F1 now has little appeal. The races are processions of one highly regulated one design spec racers. Even though they have budgets like space programs.

  • @NYGiantsDiEhArD
    @NYGiantsDiEhArD 2 года назад

    The thing I love about it is that it has such a striking appearance. It almost looks like a gnarly shack build, being that it's totally naked with all its messy parts exposed, but like in a really cool, paradoxically fancy and well-structured way. It kinda looks like a mean robot. I also love the low-slung angle you took with it, with the cockpit being tucked low and "inside" the wheelbase if you will, instead of on top of it like a tamer and more relaxed car would have. That to me just gives it a really hunched, attacking look (but then again, it's a formula car, so why am I even pointing that out?). Overall, everything about it speaks racing. It's as low to the ground and strikingly straightforward and efficient as you can get. Sweet looking car.

    • @kieranwinter6273
      @kieranwinter6273 4 года назад +2

      I know it’s not the same as having it in video but I’ve designed a suspension before so here are some useful things to look into if you’re interested:
      Racecar Design - Derek Seward
      (Really accessible book that walks through why certain engineering decisions are made)
      To go deeper: Racecar Vehicle Dynamics - Milliken & Milliken
      (Pretty much the bible of vehicle dynamics)
      They also wrote a book on chassis design too.
      Each car is different and has different fixed constraints, so it’s a mix of designing the chassis & suspension around those packaging constraints, and then optimising the geometry for the desired static & dynamic characteristics of the vehicle (discussed in those books).
      Hopefully this gives some stuff to look into as it’s really interesting and satisfying when the puzzle pieces together!

      @@bradsailer7739 You can build it but you can't take it out on public roads. We have safety regulations for a reason and it's pretty crazy to ignore them to such an extent. I don't want to drive around shit that people cobbled together in their sheds. If your build is that good you can study the laws and make the car road worthy by checking every box. It's possible and some have done it. But good luck getting it right on your own, often multi billion dollar manufacturers with decades of experience and huge RnD budgets have a hard time with these regulations.

      Even in germany there are ways around it. To make it street legal could be a pain in the butt, but there are some ways to get that thing moving at least now and then. Those ways are originally meant for dealers to move a car no matter what and are often used by car afficinados to move a car on it's own axle. Furthermore: Germany is part of the EU. So you 'only' need to register in another country. Yes, that is not cheap and it's complicated but can be done. I knew a guy who made his 'Harley' driveable on the street, that way. He ran a british licence plate... but I bet there are options even after the brexit.
