      It was alien to humans up a few centuries, too.
      The closest thing both humans and animals had before were calls, but hearing this was coupled with a physical object that made the sound rather than hearing it from somewhere in space.
      He learned to link the things SO QUICKLY.

    • @patrickrannou1278
      @patrickrannou1278 Год назад +1

      @@lanishajackson2677 Say you have two teachers trying to teach you maths. One is a much wiser and intelligent than you and very dedicated teacher, actively trying to teach you using advanced techniques. The other teacher is much stupider than you and isn't even putting the effort to try to teach you anything, all you can do is watch him do his everyday life errands and try to learn maths from that. Now, which teacher will make teaching maths easy vs hard? The difference will in fact be felt by several orders of magnitude.
      Same thing, humans teaching English make it much easier than the other way around, humans trying too learn bonobo. And this remains true DESPITE the fact that bonobos are much less intelligent that us. Because our intelligence is SOME orders of magnitude higher than bonobos, but the teaching capability differences are LOTS MORE orders of magnitude of difference.
      What our bonobo-language learning advantage we get from our higher intelligence is MORE than ignored by fact that the bonobo teaching si an even bigger disadvantage. So when taking *both* effects together, it ends up being much easier to teach english to a bonobo, than to learn bonobo from bonobos.
      A more fair comparison would be: what is easier? humans trying to learn bonobo from bonobos, just by watching them (with no active teaching involved), or bonobos trying to learn english from humans, just by watching them (also with no active teaching involved)?
      Give us a bonobo actively trying to teach us, and yeah it will be easier for us to learn bonobo, than for bonobos to learn english from scientist teachers.
      Otherwise, we should not try to compare apples and oranges.

Some of those criticisms are very legitimate, don't get me wrong, but in the case of Kanzi and his lexigrams, there is no gray room. He knows the words and symbols, and that isn't deniable. There's still a possibility for reading into his communications too much, but there is ZERO doubt that he has a meaning for all of the words the researchers claim he does.

    We should not forget the technology that would read the brains electrical signs which would allow understanding what an ape is really thinking, its hard for them to express and explain so maybe such a tech will show that apes do really think and try to speak like us but something is preventing them.

    if they can learn our language, that means they have a language of their own. How come, we intelligent humans can't learn their language?

    • @RijuChatterjee
      @RijuChatterjee 3 года назад +1

      not necessarily. Their existence in the wild is much less complex and doesn't call for complicated language. Their communications with each other in the wild is very primitive compared to what was going on here.

    • @themanyone
      @themanyone 3 года назад +2

      Our existence in civilization is much less challenging and does not call for learning all language, just our particular subset of language, English. So we generally stop learning language after a few years. This may seem amazing, but English is a subset of language. Hence, all you have to do is look at the most basic building blocks, sounds. First, learn what each animal sound means. Since we are animals and we make sounds, we have already in place a way to understand animal sounds. Letters! Take the rrrrr sound made by growling. That is the letter, "R." Once we are able to spell the sounds animals make, we can translate them into letters. Then all we have to do is look up what each letter means in our own language and think about it. R means think. The growl means you'd better think about your approach. The letter R comes to us from ancient forms of writing. It was once a picture of a head. We only know a little bit about our own language. Now we know a little bit more.
