Let me give you some context about Brazil: The most massive slavery system recorded in Human history happened in Brazil. Millions of Africans were taken away from their families and communities to face brutality in an unknown land. Hundreds of thousands died in the way to the American continent. Sons and daughters of slaves would be slaves themselves, maybe living somewhere apart from their parents. For more than 3 centuries, generations of slaves had no rights, no property, no family to support them. Abolition of slavery came in 1888 (134 years ago). Many plantation owners did not accept to pay a salary to Blacks, so thousands of European immigrants came to Brazil to fill the employment gap. And Brazil was and still is one of the most corrupted countries in the world, with little social mobility. It's not about melanin, but about a long lasting brutal injustice.

The difficulty for poor or black students to reach Universities during the period of the Military Dictatorship in Brazil, from 1964 to 1985, and later before the start of the quota policy (2012) was enormous, few were able to study at Universities. I heard the testimony of a father who was grateful to the government of Former President Lula (2003 to 2010) for his daughter having gone to study in the US at no cost to the family. It was a poor family of black origin. The government of President Bolsonaro has been destroying social policies and budget resources have been used to buy political support in the Federal Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate. Recently, Pastors of Evangelical Churches were denounced by Mayors of Brazilian cities that they were asking for money in exchange for releasing resources from the budget of the Ministry of Education.
The current quotas program is racist, by definition. The government should help the poor, does not matter the color of skin. Incidentally, the percentage of blacks who are poor is higher than the percentage of whites who are poor and so, more blacks would benefit from such a program which benefit the poor. But should be a social program of quotas, not a racial program of quotas. If you implement a racial program of quotas, which is the current status quo, you forget millions of whites in Parana, who are extremely poor; they don't have access to education, the same way that blacks who are poor do not have access to education. The only difference is that the whites in Parana had the unfortunate bad luck of being born white, the same way the blacks in our past had the unfortunate bad luck of being born black. I hope I've clarified to you that the right thing to be implemented is a social program of quotas, not a racial program of quotas.

As the well-known Brazilian saying goes: "Brazil isn't for amateurs." There's no such thing as racial monolithic voting on a certain candidate or party like the US two parties system, people vote on whoever candidate they choose to independently of their ethnicity. Plus, what's worrying the most about this year's elections is that it's so polarized that if you criticize one to some people you're automatically part of the other group. I'm Brazilian, living abroad for 15 years now. Unfortunately, Brazilians see elections as a wager, where you advertise in advance your preference and later you mock other people, in case you won the wager. Not willing to generalize... but already generalizing... I would say that Brazilians in general vote irresponsibly, being completely unable to vote on someone who is certainly going to lose the election but, still, is the best candidate according to relevant principles which are beneficial for the society as a whole. In the current election we see the former chief of a widespread gang specialized in corruption versus a complete idiot who achieved the unbelievable feat of being even worse than the former chief of a gang. And the unfortunate reality is that Brazilians in general do not consider a third option! There are several other candidates, but they do not consider! It's an incredible dichotomy between two horrible candidates, both already proven and rejected by Brazilians, but one of them is going to win the election. Unbelievable!

As the well-known Brazilian saying goes: "Brazil isn't for amateurs." There's no such thing as racial monolithic voting on a certain candidate or party like the US two parties system, people vote on whoever candidate they choose to independently of their ethnicity. Plus, what's worrying the most about this year's elections is that it's so polarized that if you criticize one to some people you're automatically part of the other group. To me, we Brazilians don't know how to vote, instead of picking two old sh** talking presidential candidates we could get new ones who could solve our problems for real.

I'm Brazilian, living abroad for 15 years now. Unfortunately, Brazilians see elections as a wager, where you advertise in advance your preference and later you mock other people, in case you won the wager. Not willing to generalize... but already generalizing... I would say that Brazilians in general vote irresponsibly, being completely unable to vote on someone who is certainly going to lose the election but, still, is the best candidate according to relevant principles which are beneficial for the society as a whole.
In the current election we see the former chief of a widespread gang specialized in corruption versus a complete idiot who achieved the unbelievable feat of being even worse than the former chief of a gang. And the unfortunate reality is that Brazilians in general do not consider a third option! There are several other candidates, but they do not consider! It's an incredible dichotomy between two horrible candidates, both already proven and rejected by Brazilians, but one of them is going to win the election. Unbelievable!
