Brazil's Evangelicals on the march | DW Documentary

- Evangelical churches are growing fast in Brazil, often filling a void left by the Catholic church and the state.
In Brazil the evangelicals are known for looking after poor and marginalized communities. But even in the wealthier districts of the megacity Rio de Janeiro the Bible-thumping Pentecostals are on the march, gaining more followers by the day. In recent years they've become an important factor in Brazil's politics, looking to impose their conservative values on society as a whole. Meanwhile, church leaders have been accused of profiteering, since faithful followers are told to donate ten percent of their income to the church. A report by Bianca Kopsch

I live in Brasil and I avoid these people like the Plague.
Light and darkness can't mix mate.
They're the worst
Me too, salve pra Bahia
I beg to agree
May I politely ask why? Haven't you seen in this very documentary how those people are the only ones providing food, necessities and hope for the poor where nobody else does?
I'll never know why outsiders are so focused on Rio only when they talk about Brazil... thousands of different cities and different states but yet only Rio seems to exist in their eyes.
The name of this is propaganda my friend, when I go to another country and say that I'm from brazil they start to talk about Rio, this is why Rio was the only european capital outside Europe
Its all that we shown in America. I didn’t truly realize how big and diverse Brazil was until I went there and spoke with the ppl cant wait to go back and yes revisit Rio and Sao Paulo but ALSO Bahia, Brasilia, and Curitiba
Porque os crentes tão crescendo aqui. Se quiser, só importar alguns milhares que falam deles na sua cidade. Não serei eu reclamando.
As a Brazilian, I believe that it is because Rio was the capital for a long long time, just like when the capital was in Bahia, Brasilia is sort of recent, historically Rio was the center, nevertheless I think Sao Paulo is more relevant than Brasilia nowadays
@@tibiabroniesguns5259 for the economy and history yes, são Paulo is more important
But when talking about politics, Brasília being the capital, is more important because it's where the power lies
When religion thoroughly infiltrates the politics of a country, then your political opponent isn't just someone whom you have strong disagreements with: they are evil. When your opponent is evil, their humanity can be denied and almost any response to them is justifiable. This dynamic corrupts both religion and politics and makes them both more toxic and dangerous.
Excellent point! There is religion as personal growth and religion exploited as a way to push hyper conservative ideology and crash any political opponent.
Well put. You went straight to the point.
Communism is a religion, for decades they controlled the Brazilian government spheres promoting their beliefs without challenge promoting drugs and death.
For over 100 years the leftists mocked Christians and harassed them in TV, Media, Schools, Universities, everywhere.
The problem is that the same way Judaism evolved into a political ideology, Zionism. And Islam evolved into a political ideology, Islamism.
Now Christianity evolved to a political ideology too and the communists in Brazil are loosing ground. This will not change.
And, yes, the evangelicals will go after them, just a matter of time.
All the Left believes that right-wingers are evil (fascists). What are you talking about? Socialism is a religion too, a secular one, but the psychological traits of leftism are exactly the same you see in religion.
We are seeing this happen in the U.S.
People begin to merge religion and politics. It’s dangerous, because then they lose all nuance and drift towards extremism.
Its a pure business. Money, no federal tax, prosperity teology and politics.
Straight to the point! Just like the Catholic Church in the past, the noble, royals, and church were manipulating politics in the name of religion.
Leftism is the religion of envy, what's the problem with them making money? People that work there deserve to be paid and the structure of church also needs to be maintained.
The dichotomy of the man who works a full time job then wanders the streets giving food to the poor vs the man who got instantly heated when they asked about tithing… which one is truly emulating Jesus
Surgical / Cirúrgico
The problem is the Brazilian context of inequality, lack of education, poverty and state abandonment. In this context, religious leaders who focus heavily on solidarity and social work will never be as successful as those who explore the theology of prosperity and dominion. Worse, even unintentionally they can still open the way for the seconds. Still, they are admirable.
I was almost baptized by an evangelical church in Sweden when I had a drugproblem. They offered help and company but it was also felt that eventually I should baptize but I don't have that kind of faith. I have a faith in God but it's personal and not something I wish to make public.
The services were good for company in my hardest times and they did help me and I am thankful for that but I don't have the will to belong to a church or group like that.
They do alot of good for people on the fringes which is very admirable but then there is this "cult" thing when you baptize and follow.
Anyways I thank them for helping me when I didn't have anyone else to turn to!
The servants of God are a body and each member is important and unique. But the members of the body must live together, walk together, help each other. That's one of the reasons to be part of the group. The baptism is the externalization of the faith, it's a commitment. To God. ❤
You're not alone ❤
Baptism and so forth isn’t a cult, just Christianity.
Matthew 10:32-33
Now you found a relationship instead of religion
Nothing wrong with being a person of faith. The problem is that these people keep imposing their beliefs on everyone, and anyone who doesn't agree is wrong. More than that, evangelical politicians, they make efforts in congress to block reforms that they do not agree with, even when the well-being of the population is at stake.
I think a person of faith carries varying levels of threat to be open to vulnerability. If someone simply believes some tales in a book, only a few steps needed to be manipulated by the bad church people. No questions, just believe what is written and said. I think it's dangerous.
For example, the demand for Sharia right?
@@vivviv4497 I don't know what that means
@@vivviv4497Exactly! Brazil is on a fast track to become a full Christian Sharia State.
Can't the same be said about secularism being forced on religious countries? Brazil is majority Christian so why is it secular and do they want to force "universal values". Shouldn't it be Christian values for a Christian population?
I’m brasilian and this scenario is like hell. They are findamentalists mixing politics with religion. Hell!

I have a question - she felt that she was just one of many but her baptism in this church she was one of 200? How is that being seen as an individual?
They want the Priest to hug them and lick their feet.
As a Brazilian, I can say how scary it´s been. It´s the start of new medieval age to Brazi. They salute the old and wicked god from the old testament. And day by day pass to talk more about God and least about Jesus.

Cuz vulnerability makes it easier for pastors to hire new slaves
Bad education
Bad education may play a part, but is not the key factor. See for example a lot of people with graduate level who support Bolsonaro. Vulnerability is indeed a more important factor.
When did you ever give something to the poor ? So why can’t good people help? When you need really bad that’s when you will meet with god
Because nobody else cares about them
We need to keep on our toes and watch these religious institutions that are growing in followership and political influence. Speaking as someone from a country that has been pentecostal all my life, it is a truly dangerous plague
What happened?
Religion is great for the believers and gives them a strong social structure and I have no issue with people exercising their faith.... UNTIL they start insisting I live in accordance with their beliefs. I don't care which religion it is; as long as they leave me to live my life as I choose, I'm fine with it.

I'm afraid of this movement to be quite honest. I don't want my country to become a teocracy.
Still better than having the government be God
@@olivermiller3720 what do you mean?
@RenataSantos-qw4pz the human brain needs an idea of right and wrong. Most people get that from either religion or the government.
Theocracy is indeed scary, and just by looking through history of Europe like France and other countries the downside is written on the wall.
@@olivermiller3720 I'm stil. not sure what do you mean. But right and wrong is not that difficult to distinguish from. No goverment or religion needs to tell me. I just ask myself: How would I feel if this was done to me?
Wow - that guy with the bling watch got really upset when you suggested that maybe he was mainly in it for the money … 😏. Like you hit a nerve, or something …
I grew up in a small town in Brazil in the early 2000's. Despite it's small size and distance from the greater urban centers, my hometown was fairly diverse when it came to religion: we had Afro-Brazilian Religions, Kardecist Spiritism , Islam (mainly from the immigrant arab families that worked in retail) and , of course, Christianity: both Catholic and Protestant (most of the protestants were Evangelical, but we got 2 small historical protestant churches, one Lutheran and the other Anglican, but I think these 2 were even smaller than the muslims lol).
That being said, I remember that growing up most of the ignorant remarks towards other religions came from the Evangelical Protestant kids, they always acted with intolerance and arrogance towards other peoples beliefs.
Don't get me wrong, Afro-Brazilian religions were the ones that suffered the most because they have a long history of being stereotyped and demonized by other Brazilians, and basically everybody here is guilty of mistreating or despising them at the some point. But God, the Evangelicals were without a doubt the champions at loathing not only the African religions, but every other one, even other Christian denominations!
As someone who comes from a Catholic household, I remember various times I heard Evangelical people talking trash about the Catholic Church.
The thing that got me most infuriated is when they would use a very condescending tone to say "We Christians and you Catholics", when not only we are Christians too, but our denomination is centuries and centuries older! I never had this type of disrespect coming from the other religions, not even from the Mainline Protestants, but garage church joeys thought they were the ones who knew better than everyone else!
It's easy to manipulate a people with so little education and hope.
Sad but true
Not true
Evangical Christians is a force to reckon with especially here in the US.
And in Latinamerica, unfortunately.
@@tukayz254God should not be represented by these demagogic religions.
Its an extremist radical association
Christianity does well because it's a message constructed specifically to defy anything and everything, and if it's successful in becoming someone's source of inspiration / hope, takes credit for anything and everything. Proselytizing is also something most religions actually don't do, Christianity ties it too morality itself.
Using Christian as in I've actually read the Bible. I know there's self identified Christians who don't subscribe to these things, not denying that they have faith, but a choice to contradict what your holy book says doesn't change what it says.
That being able to be weapomized by selfish actors with their own agendas never hasn't been a problem.

Very interesting but it's important to remember that many use Christianity for personal gain, whereas true Christian is about becoming a new creation through faith in Jesus and repentance.
I don't believe in true Christians and I am Brazilian btw. All of religious people are damaging to society
This kind of religious cult makes me remember that tiktok screenshot girl: "I believed in god as a kid and felt so moved during worship, then I went on a one direction concert and felt the same thing and realized I just like live music"
Some people on this kind of church just need a community that they can feel they belong to, and the leaders of religions know that...

For both Christianity and Islam, it's basically the outward projections of desires and ego of an individual or group of individuals that gives rise to the belief that God/Allah exists and they have the right version of his "contract" with humanity and they're not subjectively, but factually "true".
If they could just search for themselves, they would find more "truths" and insights about life than with these dumb beliefs which are an irritant to the world.
Yep. Kinda like the majority of all ideologies out there.
Confucianism is defined by the desire to maintain harmony thru social hierarchy, while Marxism is defined by their desire for classless society and disdain of bourgeoisie, Fascism by their ultra-patriotism and desire to serve their society/nation, Humanism by their narrowminded self-righteousness, Daoism by the balance and harmony in all things, Stoicism by preserverance in the face of adversity, etc.
The central theme of 3 Abrahamic religions is simple: the call for its adherents to return to humanity's "original purpose".
In Judaism it is thru purifying yourself by living a good life according to Torah, in Christianity by following the Christ, and in Islam by submiting oneself to god thru Quran.
Which is not that different to Dharmaic religion (Hinduism & Buddhism) actually. I mean it's like the way to Moksha after all.

I suspect those serving & ministering amongst the poor are far more genuinely following Christ than those who seem to be seeking to exploit the movement for power & wealth.
❤❤ God bless. Stay faithful
Tragic
Pacha Mamma Hallelujah !
Brazil is in Jesus' hands. Oh God save our nation and set us free from all the darkness. We face so many difficulties here but the Gospel cannot stop to spread all over the nation. In Jesus name.

It is just a big business. It helps people yes but by giving them a mental health support and option away from drugs with music and zero difficulty as their life stay exactly the same without having to follow rules or boundaries
I'm conservative catholic and my way to express faith is through rational logic argumentation and trying th live according my own values. But if our evangelic brothers feel good expressing their faith through singing and praying or giving blessings out loud who am I to say they are wrong.
Nice business model. Weak minded and poor fall for it.
A publishing house is not an "empire" like de journalist said, it is an organization to generate education and development in society. Let's see the good things in other people's efforts.
Good things? His publishing house makes money by selling exclusive texts used by many evangelical churches. The money earned, he uses to shamelessly support a man openly contrary to Christian values. He is a saboteur of the very democracy that grants him freedom of faith.
I would question education and development efforts by those who intend to impose their own limitations to others.
Yes....
This is a business and priests make a bunch loads of money from the poor. They live in Mansions, drive Mercedes and helicopters.
People give because they are tricked and guilt tripped by these snake oil salesmen. 5:39
