  • Discover how to use G25 & G30 Furling Systems as Top-Down Rollers: how it works, technical tricks, choosing the right chandlery for your boat, hi-tech ropes.
    Top-Down spinnaker furlers are designed to handle sails with a «soft» luff like asymmetrical spinnakers and gennakers, Code 2-6, reachers, large A-sails etc.
    Anti-torsion stay and the tack adapter swivel allow you to tightly furl main girth of large spinnakers starting from top of the sail.

    hello,
    On my good old26' boat I'd like to add a downwind cruising sail for our generally light air wind summer conditions.
    (5knt - 9knt wind on almost 160- 180 degree downwind tacks). Most often solo helming, (with pretty maidens who prefer the sun to working sail). What's your thoughts on best G option and sail config/choice?

      nxtrev1 Hi,
      If we are talking about the apparent wind strengh, I think the most effective way would be a series of gybes at 120-160 degrees, speeding up the boat rather than going dead downwind, until the wind hits a least 12-14 knots apparent. Secondly, if you are sailing a heavy full keel boat like Contessa 26, generally you should be thinking of a spinnaker-like shape for the A-sail. That gives us a large broad reaching gennaker like A2 (or maybe A5 for singlehanding). This sail will require a top-down furler.
      But, when the wind is really light as 5-9 kts true (so you wont be able to go downwind anyway) or if you are looking for a universal cruising sail, I would consider an inexpensive nylon drifter (cruising code-like sail, screecher, UPS - it has many names) made of the cloth like say Superkote 75 and hoisted on a basic furler. This sail is practically trouble free for singlehanding. The wind strength determines the usage: when its light, go upwind. When the wind builds up you may reach or broad reach, and then pole it out and go downwind wing-to-wing. When it is about 20 kts apparent you may go downwind without the main, only on a drifter.
      For a good old boat I would make a short sprit, because the pulpit is often stretched forward to match the stem shape, and it will be an issue if the sail would lay on it every time. And I would choose not very flat cut and bigger size of the sail - somewhat like racing Code1. It will be good for an old boat also - do not forget, there once were spanker sails for old boats, but with the modern cloth and triradial cut they became even better.
      You may see this sail type in our other videos - the white one or tri-color one.

      I agree with your gybe scenario. The Ranger 26 (mull design) is a fin keel config. I am confused as to why I cannot go downwind in the typical 5- 9knt conditions? Very much agree with your bow sprit set up and am working on that project. Thanks for the confirmation! Sounds like I should go bigger or perhaps use symmetrical spinnaker on the top down G25 rigged to the sprit?
      Thanks for all your consideration.

      nxtrev1 When the wind is 5-9 kts true I am afraid it would be too weak to give you more or less decent speed dead downwind - thats what I mean. As for using a symmetrical spinnaker on a furler, I dont think it may be possible. And for a 26ft boat I woukd consider a G30

      nxtrev1 This is an expensive laminate Code1 on the NS video. It is better for stronger winds and close reaching because it has lower stretch under load. When its really light a nylon drifter catches the wind, while an expensive sail made of CodeZero Optic is still too heavy to maintain its shape. With 7kts apparent (3-4 true) I may do as good as 5-5.5 kts on apparent close reach \ beam reach true: ruclips.net/video/Yfi1xeNxA2Q/видео.html

    I have jeanneau SO50DS and I am planning to use asymmetric ginneaker 19x9.70x16.5 meters(or code zero) which model is suitable ?And what is the price?

    • @NorthmanSailing
      @NorthmanSailing  2 года назад

      Hi. G-series is for smaller boats. For a JSO 50DS you will typically need a 4.5-5 ton rated furler. We do not have it yet even in NS series with a maximum of a 2.5 ton rated model suitable for 40-45 ft boats, sorry :)

      @@oguztanrisever9946 Actually, according to your sail dimensions (19x9.70x16.5) the gennaker is about 90 sq.m. - it is a rather moderate sail suitable for NS2.5 or NS2.5 Top-Down. What is the exact sail area and what kind of sail is this (Code Zero or Asym Spinnaker)?

    • @oguztanrisever9946
      @oguztanrisever9946 2 года назад

      Yes you are right. The dimensions are recommended by UK SAILMAKERS and most probably asymmetric spinnaker I will use but for code zero same system is recommended. The sail area is about 150 m2

      @@oguztanrisever9946 it seems to me we are communicating simultaneously here and at eBay. I have sent an answer to a eBay thread. We are based in Finike in the Med, so we could even meet during the season and you could see the furler system working :)
