I thought this was like he's singing to a man, like his kind of man.
It's about an older woman advising a younger man ('and she said...'), whom she knows has a thing for her, how to be the best he can be (for his sake). Meanwhile the younger guy only hears 'you could be my kind of man' (hence why it's repeated over and over again) and so wants to become that guy she's describing in the hopes she'll take him seriously and return his feelings. It's a lovely song filled with the good intentions of an older woman sincerely hoping a younger person grows up well, and the delicate, inexperienced love the younger guy is feeling towards an older woman he admires.
