    CBRN guy here, everything they've said is spot on but to reiterate. If you're dealing with anything other than CS and you do not decontaminat your skin and put on a head to toe cbrn suit of some kind IMMEDIATELY AFTER putting on your mask you will be in a world of hurt as most cbrn threats WILL GO THROUGH YOUR SKIN even with a mask on.

      Some CBRN hazards such as chlorine gas can unalive you startling quickly. To escape a threat like that you need an respirator connected to an air tank. Hazmat truckers have "escape bottles" in the cabs of their truck for this sort of emergency

    • @briankonreiharvey8105
      @briankonreiharvey8105 Месяц назад +18

      @@1GasGoblin So what I’m hearing is, if there’s any type of CBRN event occurs - you’re typical civilian with a gas mask is screwed? Like you’d need multiple chem suits and they’re not reusable and you’d need multiples for each member of a family? So like why would some countries issue gas mask to their civilians?

    • @1GasGoblin
      @1GasGoblin Месяц назад

      @@briankonreiharvey8105 TLDR, yes if you're in cbrn contamination with just a gas mask you're screwed.
      Long answer, anything is better than nothing and the specifics of the cbrn contamination will dictate the level of protection you need. A gas mask is a great peice of kit to have and it will increase your likelihood of survival considerably. What that looks like depends on the type of contamination you're dealing with. For something like a blister agent, say mustard gas for example, a gas mask will keep you from dying immediately however any skin exposed to the gas will form large puss filled blisters that can cause serious infections without proper care but are survivable. However if you're dealing with nerve gas like Sarin (mentioned in the video) or VX those will seep through your skin in approximately 8 minutes and after that it's lights out. The only way to avoid that would be to put on your mask, move under overhead cover, immediately decontaminate your skin and hair (including holding your breath and decontaminating your face) and putting on a level C or higher CBRN suit. So why would some countries give their civilians masks? Because a gas mask alone, while not the best solution is better than nothing and depending on the cbrn contamination you're dealing with haveing just a mask could be enough to keep you alive. Ultimately all of this gear is useless without proper training. When you're in a contaminated environment the smallest mistake could end you so the goal should be to escape and get decontaminated (by professionals if possible). If all you can get to do that is a gas mask than that's better than nothing if you want suits then you need to understand their limitations as well as how to properly use and store them otherwise they won't do you much good.

    On beards:
    I'll give this analogy. Firefighters are not permitted to have facial hair that could impede the seal of their SCBA. And these are professionals who, likely far more frequently than the military, deal with toxic atmospheric conditions, gasses, vapors, and particulates.
    Food for thought.

    Fun fact:
    Finnish M61 gas masks are designed for rifle operation on right handed combatants.
    Fits NATO filters, and usually comes with an adapter for other filters.
    It's old, and thick.
    Comes with this nasty powder that acts as a cleaning agent whenever you enter a compromised environment.
    It's baking soda with a stabilizer.

    CBRN guy (USMC 2019-'23.) In relation to hair, surprisingly the biggest issue Ive seen in my experience is guys with the hair on their head and not their face being too long. Hair that hangs in front of the forehead gets caught in between the mask and the skin if not moved out of the way leading to exposure and mask contamination. Best remedy we found was hold mask by face in dominant hand, sweep hair back towards top of head with nondominant hand, press mask to face, seal, clear, secure mask carrier. Enjoyed the video, good knowledge bombs dropped here guys.

      What do y'all do about glasses

    • @wolfpack2486
      @wolfpack2486 Месяц назад +3

      @qh5545 You have to find and buy or have Corrective lens INSERTS made. There are special adaptors M50 & M53 lens holders that attach INSIDE the mask. YOU CANNOT WEAR REGULAR GLASSES WITH EAR ARMS! This will break the seal on both sides and make the mask Worthless. Buy the Optical Insert adaptors and bring to your Optometrist or Eye Glass store.
      Option is to get a cheap pair, remove arms and ziptie or attach to the adaptor. There are Eyeglass adaptors for M53, M50, M40, Mira CM-8 And one other. (Research that) Good Luck.

    • @thecbrndude6208
      @thecbrndude6208 Месяц назад

      @@qh5545 There are lense inserts that fit into the mask uses your regular prescription. I would just grab my regular glasses and throw them off my face as fast as possible to get the mask on. If you don't have inserts, breathing still takes priority over seeing.
      EDIT: As wolfpack said above, different masks use different inserts. Find the inserts that match your mask. Some of the inserts sometimes like to press on the face between the eyes or forehead. A quick remedy is to take a piece of 3M adhesive foam and place it in the spot where the insert causes pressure or rubs on the face. This cushions the insert and spreads the pressure out a little bit, but I only recommend this as a stopgap until you can sit down and readjust your mask and inserts to sit comfortably on your face.

    One huge tip for people, not all gas masks will work with Night Vision, I bought a MIRA CM-6M because it has great visibility only to do some training with my night vision and the clear windscreen sticks out too for to wear Night Vision, if you are going to use a Gas Mask with Night Vision you have to make sure the mask was designed for that.

    Make sure to do your negative pressure checks!

      Probably a good reason to have a air quality sensor of some description handy so you know when to bug out from something when your mask won't work.
      I have experience with So2 meters and organic gasses blocking masks from working briefly as a Confined Space Attendant, even with the mask on as soon as that alarm started screaming I was calling people out and clearing the area, but that was at a refinery with an old leaky sulfer handling plant, with the project ongoing to replace it putting us close to the source (ie a wimpy stone's throw)

    For comms, Disco 32 sells a dongle that goes from the exterior electrical connections that the VPU connects into (flap at the front of the M50) and clicks into the top of your PTT. It even has a pass through so you can connect your wired earpro in just above that and receive audio. All while making use of the microphone you installed with your VPU kit. It adds a lot of length to the PTT but makes it so you can just about whisper in your mask to be heard via radio.

    MIRA has a number of selections that do not require a proprietary filter; after watching this segment, I got onto the MIRA site and found the CM6M, CM7M, and CM8M. The 7 and 8 are designed with a cheek weld that make it easy to shoot a rifle - I bought a CM8M for myself, and a CM6M for an extra. Both have excellent visibility, as where the CM7M’s visibility is less than 75%.
    All three accept a standard filter size, including the NATO filters. MIRA is planning on applying for NIOSH certification.

    Surplus and gas mask enthusiast here.
    Something I would've liked if you mentioned, regarding masks is to avoid surplus gas masks. Especially ones from the cold war era like Soviet Warsaw pact masks and others. Reasons, 1 being most of the filters are too old and contain trace amounts of asbestoses fibers. The other reason is that the masks were made cheaply, and they're just old while you can easily pick up a soviet GP-5 mask in good condition (Gp-5 is one of the most common masks available) There are issues like lenses fogging up and Warsaw pact masks are a slightly different 40 mm thread making most modern American or NATO filters incompatible.
    There are ways around it though I've picked up a few surplus masks that I trust and have used, like Polish MP-5, and Israeli M-15, and MA4. My go too mask right now is the USA M-40 Which ran me about 230 USD. After obtaining brand new filters, a good cleaning and seal check they're good to go. If I had known about Mira Safety sooner, I'd already have a CM-7.

    I love my MSA millennium. Peripheral vision is unparalleled. They have a drinking water tube and voice amps are available. Used it at work a few times for chemical spills, nothing serious though. First time I used it was cleaning up some citrus oil. I couldn't smell a even with a beard, but the guy working the trailer next to me had his face tingling.

    I’ve just finished watching your recent video, “Gas Mask for Civilians.” Again, you guys have put out another totally appropriate video for civilians.
    I haven’t checked any of the comments regarding my “two cent.” Something to be on the lookout for when purchasing a used mask is doing an all inclusive PM (Preventive Maintenance) check of your mask. I purchased a used M50 several years ago and noted that the self sealing disk valves were dry rotted and NOT self sealing. This is a definite no go. Make sure that that you review PN71016/10 Issue E. This publication will walk you through the use of the mask soup to nuts.
    Great job guys! I look forward to more great content.

    Would love to see a follow up video comparing the effectiveness of various hardware-store respirators. The oil field requires that all workers keep a 3M respirator on hand in case of an H2S outbreak, so it would be interesting to see how they hold up to CS.

      Avon is much better and actually certified. Mira takes Czech surplus masks and sells them at a HUGE mark up. If you want a Mira mask cheaper buy the actual mil issued one and it’s about $90.00

    Great vid! Please have a part 2 on storage of canisters, bags to carry them on person, leg, battle belt etc. Do you carry them with canister on or in bag? Once you open canister what is the shelf life and can you re-seal them.

      If you foresee the need for immediate use, personally I recommend the following:
      1. Attach the filter but leave the seal on the outer surface (if there is one). These can easily be removed at time of use.
      2. Put the entire mask/filter combo into a vacuum-seal bag and remove the air from the bag (make friends with your local butcher or deli to facilitate access to a suitable vacuum sealer machine!)
      3. Keep it in a waterproof pouch either on your belt or drop-leg rig. In your ruck, trunk, or bug-out bag is no bueno if you need to don it in a hurry!

      Don't cheap out on safety equipment. Like they mentioned, the actual mask is just a platform to host the filter. Get whatever mask you want, surplus or whatever, but don't get skimpy when it comes to the filters, which are what will actually save you.

    Slight correction - European companies *are* audited, but only on yearly basis. Not once. The only difference is - there are no unannounced audits. Just regular planned yearly ones. They are as thorrow as US ones though.

    I highly recommend getting a good PAPR over a regular gas mask, a gas mask will only work okay if you are in a tip top shape. For the avarage joe, exhaused, old, young or injured person a PAPR is a way better choice, just make sure to get one that takes standard rechargeable batteries!

    Gas mask nerd here Mira made a direct copy of the OM-90 mask and made variants of it and are selling them for a massive mark up of like $200 but you could get things like the french M51 as you showed in the intro segment takes NATO filters and is like 30-40 dollars and filters shouldn't cost 20-50 dollars i get Israeli filters for $13 and they have a 30 year shelf life and filters NBC and CBRN or you could get a Chinese TF-1 a GP-5 knock off that takes GOST and NATO filters and rather than having straps it's a helmet hood mask so you just put your chin in and pull it over your head and it should seal.

      Thank you ! It drives me a bit nuts. How Mira is recommended so much.
      If you just want a mask for escape and don't need a drinking tube.
      Then honestly look up what your fire brigade was using 10-15 years ago. And buy it for 20-30€ on a local market place. Make sure it isn't a positive pressure mask and has a 40mm thread. And your fine ^^

    • @FleshStick360
      @FleshStick360 Месяц назад

      @@ianspy1 Yeah i think only military's need drinking tubes because it's gonna be hot in a combat zone but us civilians just need to escape we won't be wearing them for too long.

    • @ianspy1
      @ianspy1 Месяц назад

      @@FleshStick360 I slightly disagree. Having the option to drink something while wearing the mask is a nice comfort. I appreciate this a lot as I wear my AMF12 about 2 times per week for 2-3 hours at a time.
      And if you don't have much experience wearing a mask. And need to evacuate a zone on foot. It will be nice to have a liter of water to drink. Drinking cold water while wearing a hot mask and sweating is VERY refreshing xD. This ofc also means that you need to fill the bottle in a clean environment from a safe source.
      And know how the system works.
      The one from Avon is pretty fool proof. Having a valve in the bottle, drinking tube. And cut of when the straw isn't in the drinking position.

    As someone who has to wear respirators for work on a regular basis, both of your facial hair would be considered "out of compliance" for getting any type of good seal. I know you can defeat some facial hair and there's tricks like throwing petroleum jelly or something around the seal, but it's just another thing to be mindful of

    A note on the water, they make adapters for running your drinking tube to a camelbak type bladder and not just a canteen. That way if you need water you just turn your straw on and it's ready.
