Ladies and gentlemen, it's time Peugeot did something to regain their place in the ...'aristocracy' of the automotive industry. Peugeot definitely belongs there. The second oldest surviving company in the world with a racing legacy few can match deserves better than the usual... 'who would pay this amount of money for a Peugeot'. If a Peugeot is worth 70K euros for all its engineering, one SHOULD pay for it because it is worth it. So, in sum, don't underestimate the old 'Lion'. Respect it! Peugeot should only put the R Hybrid into production if it makes financial sense. It's not time for experimentations.
Who guarantees that it's worth it? The reliability of their cars isn't that good in general and they have no expertise in building hybrids. Find someone to bet that much money on this horse...
+Sirion pff dude a peugeot is more reliable of any german car you can buy on the market and the already build lmp1 Hybrid and have hybrid production car on the market
+appelpower1 Check the website reliability index. French cars 2nd place after Asian cars. German cars pré last. Current quality index in Germany, came out last week, French cars 3rd place. German cars, surprise, pré last.
+Zwai Dyasi They actually got an overall LeMans winning LMP1 called the Peugeot 908... Which is the only non VAG car to have won Le Mans since they first did back in the early 2000s.
I've always wondered that if PSA Group (Peugeot-Citroen) is one of the most victorious carmakers in the World in motorsports, they have World titles in almost all the FIA Championships other than F1, then why they don't have yet any supercar in their road legal models range. Do it Peugeot please!!
I think we are all missing the point here. For many years Peugeot have been slaughtered by critics for producing "safe" family cars. In the last few years we have seen Peugeot deliver to the fans what made them such a great manufacture in the first place. the 208 GTI, now the 308 GTI and the wonderful RCZR. Peugeot used to have a bad reputation for quality but they have come much better over the years. But many people do not understand why they have been given this stigma! Peugeot have developed many things that are now bog standard in many new cars, and like all new things there are always bugs. So they take time ti fix and with that can come problems. What this car gives back to Peugeot is the chance to be the leaders in the class once more, something not seen since the fantastic, and much loved 205GTI the car to this day set the bench mark for what we know as the hot hatch! It is time to take this back I say!
Yup. When you think about it, it is a logical developments from their LM P1 racing program. If they put this power train in a RCZ and sort out the handling, they have a Porsche killer here.
Second thought, I've just learned that the base Focus RS is £30,000 (€40,000). However special this power plant is, it does not warrant a price tag of 2 Focus RS !! They need to lowered the price tag, or design something really special to put it in.
I think they will do it. They've proved in the past to always come with cracking cars from time to time that function as a show piece for the brand. I recall for example the 406 coupe or the RCZ. This car would perfectly fit that tradition, and could potentially set a bench mark for hot hatches to come. No, they would be mad not making this car
This kind of technology is the future of sportscars! Think Audi TT Clubsport Concept and VW Golf GTE Sport Concept with their 48 volt systems. No more annoying turbo lag and gigantic levels of acceleration. What's not to like?
i love it!! i want it!!! and it should have had a mitsubishi badge on it(as i'm a big fan of them) ... remending you of the miev evo from 2005... but never the less mitsu didnt step up thair game so... peugeot are going to get the profit of a perfecting a great idea
I dunno if this works as a hot hatch...the price point may be a bigger problem than it was for the A45...this powertrain in the RCZ may work tho...or at least be interesting and maybe put it some where in cayman territory
+Tatenda Jinya (EthosVeritas) a hot-hatch (if you ignore hot-hatch culture) is essentially a high performance hatchback. The notion that a hot-hatch should be affordable is just hot-hatch culture. Problem is people are too stuck in the past.
speedometer111 yeah i can see that, the RS3, A45 etc price points are starting to sort blur the lines..i suppose even more so when u have luxury in these hot hatches which they never used to have
Definitely the direction I want the car development to go. Just imagine a 2.0 TFSI PlugIn Hybrid Golf R, an Audi RS4 E-Tron, BMW M3 Hybrid. Gosh, I can't wait for the future!
+ianiva True, I'd get a Porsche GT4 for that amount of money. Don't care about the a €35000 308 GTI with a couple of electric motors and hundreds of kilos of batteries.
+Antoine Marty You are there already. The M2 is 54k Euros, 25k cheaper than this. True, it will not be as quick, but still. Other than the price, they should totally build it even if they'll have to build it at a loss.
They should save that engine combo for an all together new car and call it something else, It looks incredible. Although I have a feeling some may be put off or already have preconceptions about the 308 badge name! Just a thought
In The Netherlands, car prices are influenced by an extremely sensitive CO2 tax system. As a result, plug-in hybrids like this one, with their extremely low theoretical CO2 figures, are very cheap. Thus, the 308 R HYbrid will be extremely good value here, if they put it into production. Let's just hope they will.
4 bucket-alike seats, I would even make small visual elements roll-cage and keep weight down. Why not! Peugeot is properly teasing us. Even thou RZ would be more suitable for this type, but then existance would not be so dramatic as with hot hatch.
Pretty sure I sat in the show version at Goodwood FOS this year, and can't say I was impressed. Biggest point that stuck out was you have to open the doors with an underhand grip, there wasn't enough space for your fingers to fit behind the handle if opening with palm facing down. This felt really odd, not come across a car that does this. The interior quality looked cheap too, lots of carbon 'looking' material used.
dommage on ne se rend pas du tout compte de l'accélération ! Peugeot doit la sortir ! c'est avec des modèles pareil qu'on monte en gamme et arrivera a revenir sur les Allemandes et leurs gros moteurs croisons les doigts
I'm still not sold on hybrids. The cost of the manufacturing of the battery and the reliability. What about the environmental issue of the battery going to waste?.
I think 10 years from now this might be the norm for hot hatches, seems like a good step especially since hyper cars and super cars are going hybrid and a hot hatch is supposed to give you that cheap super car feel yet you know for a fact you getting something wonderful
Seems very interesting! I haven't seen something like this before. I don't think I ever can afford that car tho, if it gonna have that price. But it seems like it may be worth that price. I'm excited too see how this project goes! ^_^
Hybrids that actually boost performance, not just MPG, will garner more interest and desire than yet another Prius. Sadly, because this is a European firm, I have to say that the price of such a car will be in the $50K-$60K and that is being generous. Although I understand Volvo is working on a ~80hp KERS system than can bolt into almost any car and is pretty cheap. So a hot compact with KERS could be maybe $30k-$35K to start, thinking of some thing like a Focus ST or MazdaSpeed 3 so equipped. Then there was a European supplier firm that was working on a bolt on motorized rear suspension for FWD cars. Hotter motors and some Ultra-caps and there again for well under $40K. Go with the cool idea but work it from the bottom up and stead of the top tier down. It would be easier for your boards to say yes to it.
I don't get that two-tone paint job on the show car. Is it supposed to reflect some sort of motorsports livery? It looks like the arse-end of one car was fused to the snout end of another.
I would 100% buy this car. Ideally under 40k would be better, but like the video says 'its a lot of car'. It looks extremely nice and the interior is amazing (especially the seats) Peugeot have never been a very interesting car company.. but this.. this is interesting. Very interesting.
They should make this a supercar design instead of a hot hatch...500bhp is a huge number that can boost Peugeot's reputation with a supercar of their own.
What they can do is test the waters. Put it in a limited production, lets say 308 units and charge around 50 to 60.000€. If the interest is there then make another batch. If not they don't lose money and they can move on to other projects.
I'll be interested in hybrids when the batteries are really lightweight (lighter than a full tank of fuel), when they can have a manual transmission and when the battery autonomy do not allow at any time the internal combustion engine has to load them. Until that moment, give me a simple and "lightweight" manual sport car (not necessary a super powerful engine), and not a computer on wheels that makes believe me I am a driver I'm not.
Hybrids are the future. Look at all the super/hyper cars out there. LaFerrari, Porsche 918, McLaren P1, all hybrids, and all mind you with lower emissions than a Prius to boot
It is too complicated and too expensive, unfortunately. But if they do are going to make it, I would suggest the name GTh. Just like GTi where it stood for Grand Turismo injection. Now Grand Turismo hybrid. And oh, I am a big CVT fan, so I am pleased to hear that the car will have CVT.
+Ronald de Rooij The car does not have a CVT. It feels like a CVT in one of the drive modes, because the electric motors are compensating for the moments when the gas engine must switch gears. And it's not more complicated, for the performance it's less complicated than any 400 HP car with 4s to the 100km/h. The most expensive thing about it are the batteries, and the petrol engine (+ transmission). From my perspective, they should ditch the ICE, and put more batteries. And a simple gearbox integrated in each of the front and back diffs with just 2 gears, to make higher speeds a possibility.
damn right i don't care where the omphf comes from - the more torque the better - I'd definitely take this car over the other hatches. like how she looks as well, especially the back end, quite chunky, bit like the A3 one thing - she should definitely have a full electric mode for that kind of money
My mistake i meant to say Fisker made cars for the wealth few and are out of business because of it, make a great car for the everyday driver and you'll be better off !
Funny for me to see the test of this (futur ? wait & see...) great French Hyper Hot Hatch on a track where I run one day each year at least in the Southeast of France. ^^ Circuit de "Le Luc-en-Provence" :-)
Unfortunately, I don't think Peugeot will sell it. They stopped the production of RCZ because of profitability. Peugeot is trying to make money first of all. I think it will stay as a prototype...
If a peugeot costs 80k than its fucking worth every penny. Damn it has the concept of a 918 in an affordable car. I would totally buy this hybrid future beast instead of some bmw m4 or whatever.
Ladies and gentlemen, it's time Peugeot did something to regain their place in the ...'aristocracy' of the automotive industry. Peugeot definitely belongs there. Correction: their reliability *used* to be rubbish.
Georgios Vallianatos That's why I said 'used to'.
It sounds like a Porsche 919. Peugeot should put this car into production. They need a halo car.
+Zwai Dyasi They actually got an overall LeMans winning LMP1 called the Peugeot 908... Which is the only non VAG car to have won Le Mans since they first did back in the early 2000s.
+Zwai Dyasi well it's not that bad, we could say the "911" name is famous "thanks" to Peugeot haha ! :)
abhishek jha the Peugeot is qo much better =)
but the interior is far of a Classe A....
918
And it works the same way
I've always wondered that if PSA Group (Peugeot-Citroen) is one of the most victorious carmakers in the World in motorsports, they have World titles in almost all the FIA Championships other than F1, then why they don't have yet any supercar in their road legal models range. Do it Peugeot please!!
Nah to call it a super car they either have to bring the Puegot Onyx or Citroen Survolt to production.
Because noone would buy it.
I think we are all missing the point here. For many years Peugeot have been slaughtered by critics for producing "safe" family cars. Perfectly said! It's all badge snobbery these days sadly.
Time to rethink this concept. I'ld buy one!
Great review Auto Express. Thanks a lot. It is a fantastic car. Hopefully it will be more price like 50k € and not 80k. Let's keep fingers crossed.
Yup. When you think about it, it is a logical developments from their LM P1 racing program.
If they put this power train in a RCZ and sort out the handling, they have a Porsche killer here.
+ahlapski Yes, people might actually put the 80000€ in a very fast RCZ but not in a 308 regardless of how much power it has
+Ous Yan I'd have the 308 over a useless RCZ.
Second thought, I've just learned that the base Focus RS is £30,000 (€40,000). However special this power plant is, it does not warrant a price tag of 2 Focus RS !! They need to lowered the price tag, or design something really special to put it in.
+ahlapski It would be brilliant to put that power setup in an RCZ, it would fucken smack a porsche on the track or in a straight line.
+ahlapski RCZ is dead. Soon out of production, if not already
It 's the new peugeot 205 Turbo 16 of modern time ...
(
yall remember when we used to think this was gonna happen
This is just amazing from Peugeot. Bring it out Peugeot! Ex 306 GTi-6 driver.
There is the new peugeot 508 pse hybrid with 360 hp . This 308 R hybrid was the prototype for development.
I'd take on right now!! Awesome car
it's very interesting to see high performance hybrid cars today and i hope this car would be the start of hyper hybrid hatch, saloon, and suv
I absolutely love the way this car looks! Its so sharp and attractive! Leagues better than the equivalent Golf R or Megane Sport.
4 years later, still no 308 R for us...
dam
I have a Peugeot 308 GTI (270) and really want this 308 R hybrid upgrade!
Space 1999, mind blown, haven't thought about that show in decades. Loved it as a kid.
Yes.....yes.....yes.....please put this in production.....i absolutely love this thing....
I think they will do it. They've proved in the past to always come with cracking cars from time to time that function as a show piece for the brand. I recall for example the 406 coupe or the RCZ. +João Soares Here comes the age of Hybrid cars with huge torque and instant power feedback :')
I have the regular'' 1.6 diesel allure version'' of this and it is so much fun to drive i can't even imagine how much fun i would get in 308 R wow..
We are in 2019 and Peugeot said next year we'll get the Hybrid and the GTI Hybrid. It takes time probably to lower the price.
Epic video guys, love the score at the end.
i love it!! i want it!!! and it should have had a mitsubishi badge on it(as i'm a big fan of them) ... remending you of the miev evo from 2005... but never the less mitsu didnt step up thair game so... peugeot are going to get the profit of a perfecting a great idea
I knew I recognized that voice from somewhere. I'm glad I found you man lol
Absolutely should make this car. It Definatley has the potential to attract all sorts of buyers with those looks and performance figures.
Now there's the Peugeot Sport Engineered 508 with 400 hp ! 0-100 km/h in about 4 seconds and probably a series production.
I dunno if this works as a hot hatch...the price point may be a bigger problem than it was for the A45...this powertrain in the RCZ may work tho...or at least be interesting and maybe put it some where in cayman territory
I think this powertrain in an RCZ would eat a Cayman alive, at least in straights. It'd almost be on par with the base 911 Turbo.
+Tatenda Jinya (EthosVeritas) It looks like GTI Hybrid is in higher league than Cayman.

I've been waiting for this... If I had the money to buy hell yes
Going on 3 years, guessing we're sol
0:45 is that GRUB on the board computer screen?
Insanely cool, i hope they build it.
The sounds it makes are reminescent of that of retro turbochargers spooling, which is a sound that I like.
They should certainly make it but with €80,000 you can buy lots of other great cars.
+ianiva
True, I'd get a Porsche GT4 for that amount of money. Don't care about the a €35000 308 GTI with a couple of electric motors and hundreds of kilos of batteries.
+BatuKMan1 You can't get a GT4 for 80000 no more
+Antoine Marty
You can get a Boxster Spyder then.
Or a corvette, I agree with you for that kind of money I fail to see why people would buy a hatchback.. For 80000 you're approaching BMW M money.
+Antoine Marty You are there already. The M2 is 54k Euros, 25k cheaper than this. True, it will not be as quick, but still. Other than the price, they should totally build it even if they'll have to build it at a loss.
Would love to know how this handles with power yes its quick but in comparison to what ? come on Peugeot do it !
Peugeot seems to be good in hybrid power, 500 hp with only 70 g co2/km, that's the futur to have acces to the city centre within 10 years !
They should save that engine combo for an all together new car and call it something else, It looks incredible. Although I have a feeling some may be put off or already have preconceptions about the 308 badge name! Just a thought

Sounds perfect in the cabin
A Golf R 400 hp is 70 000 € so Peugeot can do a good price for this more powerfull and lower consumption car, does it still have 5 seats ?
+Didier Lemoine 4 seats only.
+Didier Lemoine Golf R is 300hp*
+Owismael there is a model called golf r 400 which yes has 400hp.
+supercooled Just looked it up....damn that's a nice car. Peugeot wouldn't even get a thought!
+Didier Lemoine This thing is not out.
I want that widebody. Sadly they didn't build this
They must build it. That's for sure.
Renault did the Clio V6 which was outrageous. This 308Hybrid needs building.

This hot hatch Is AWD by the power of electric RWD
Oh yes please, I'd surely like this to be the future!
Gongrats to the French, it was about time!
Seems very interesting! I haven't seen something like this before.
I don't think I ever can afford that car tho, if it gonna have that price. But it seems like it may be worth that price.
I'm excited too see how this project goes! ^_^
Isn't this the same technology that McLaren used in P1?
They should make it as that's gonna be a future of the cars and to be honest it looks cool :)
please make it look like that concept.
Peugeot, simply just do it! Please, it will help the reputation of Peugeot so much...just do it, release that monster!
They should put this kind of Engine in every model!!
i bet between 55 and 60K € the GTI full equip is already 40K !
I don't get that two-tone paint job on the show car. Is it supposed to reflect some sort of motorsports livery? It looks like the arse-end of one car was fused to the snout end of another.
What about a a 308, or even a 208, 1.0 liter, turbo charged hybrid, with near 200-250bhp?
I would 100% buy this car. Ideally under 40k would be better, but like the video says 'its a lot of car'. It looks extremely nice and the interior is amazing (especially the seats) Peugeot have never been a very interesting car company.. but this.. this is interesting. Very interesting.
Good job Peugeot, they should wait for the new 508 R hybrid 4X4 to put it into production, at least people will have different choice !
tech for future Peugeot and DS :))
As long as they brought the price to within a reasonable range, Audi RS3 buyers will be looking for their receipt..!!!
Cool car but…how heavy will it be?
+Alain Sadun 308 R = 1 T 5 about !
I bet you this drive train will be in the next gen RCZ R
What about a futur 508 R hybrid 4X4 500 thp ?
Did he say 90+ MPG.. 500+ BPH..??? Look's and sounds great too... I'll take one!
+Saj Abbas Yes. 0-60 in under 4 seconds. 50k, quite reasonable I'd say.
I agree!
awsome car, maybe the begining of a new era of superhatches ,just like they did with the 205 gti
Hey Steve, send me one please. I ask because we won't get this beast in the USA and I'd love to try it out and then buy one!
Powerfull Hybrid is the future for all sport cars !
They should make this a supercar design instead of a hot hatch...500bhp is a huge number that can boost Peugeot's reputation with a supercar of their own.
I would like to see that engine in small two seater like Lotus :)
If they price it around the 40k eur mark, I will have one.
such a mellow voice
it has torsion beam at the rear, is this right? if it is right, isn't it some ridiculous??
What they can do is test the waters. Put it in a limited production, lets say 308 units and charge around 50 to 60.000€. If the interest is there then make another batch. If not they don't lose money and they can move on to other projects.

And a simple gearbox integrated in each of the front and back diffs with just 2 gears, to make higher speeds a possibility.
^What he said
Cool car! Probably would still go for a RS3
it needs a wing to controle it and big tires
how much this car???? thank you
Incredible car!
But tell those guys from Peugeot to leave this "hybrid" badge and just name it "GTR"!
but wouldn't that involve some sort of copyright issues with nissan?
GhoSt DarK98
It could. But Peugeot and Suzuki have cars with name "GTI".
How about GTI-R ?
damn right i don't care where the omphf comes from - the more torque the better - I'd definitely take this car over the other hatches.
like how she looks as well, especially the back end, quite chunky, bit like the A3
one thing - she should definitely have a full electric mode for that kind of money
Looks great
I guess the production failed because they were meant to be released a few years ago
Steve do a review of the 2016 Mustang Shelby GT350.In my opinion that's the best car in the world right now.
Is it a plug-in hybrid?
love the design, Less drama almost same as audi rs3...
How much do you guys reckon this weighs?
"Depollution system faulty"?
They really should make it! :D
Unfortunately I can't get this car in usa😞😞
sipitung gozaru No one can get it right now
Unfortunately, I don't think Peugeot will sell it. They stopped the production of RCZ because of profitability. Peugeot is trying to make money first of all. I think it will stay as a prototype...
