For someone who's stepped away from your channel, a little while now, this project brings me back. Loved the series on this Evo, especially the undercarriage details, and elated to this beauty emerge from its cobwebbed cave. You have my attention.
FYI: Balance shafts have nothing to do with whether or not the engine builder balanced the rotating assembly. They're used to cancel out the vibrations you get as a result of all the pistons stopping and reversing direction (at tdc & bdc) at the same time in an inline engine.
no, the engines designed balance (mitsubishi not builder) depends on if you can delete the balance shafts, you can do them just find the toyotas 2AZ engines, but not in others
Awesome to see this build revived. Such a shame your efforts in building the last engine were ruined by the tuner as I thought you did a great job building it
I feel your pain on the organization thing. When I bought my Evo as a rolling shell, the guy I bought it from gave me a 5 gallon bucket with all the bolts for the drive train just thrown in it.
How do you miss that much spark knock though? Sasha is still a competent tuner so what was happening on the ECU side? I’d address those safeties and the knock system configuration before heading back. Run Shell 91 to figure out the curves, then move up to 94 to chase MBT.
When you delete balance shafts you need the 1989/91 straight cut oil pump gears. The helical oem gears without a shaft in the block will want to walk into the oil pump housing. I have 4 sets and one set is for my wife's evo 9. I did it to my 92 galant vr4
For the power steering on my Evo 8 I just unbolt the passenger motor mount and Jack up the motor on that side. Once you've done that you can slide the bolt through one of the holes in the pulley.
I always get the EVO 6 videos you've guys made once in a while in my suggestions feed and has been a constant reminder of this build. Glad to see this is a new video on the build!
Will Sasha be tuning this new motor? He shouldn't be allowed near another 4G63 again if his excuse was you didn't tell him it was a hi-comp motor... You check for knock on every run! Even the stock ecu will give you a live knock CEL flash and can will retard timing to protect the engine. All in the past now though, you guys have done a great job! TWICE!!! I hope you get to enjoy the car now. Congratulations.
I feel your pain on the front end accessory drive. I am currently putting the initial miles on my 1990 Hyundai Sonata with a 4G64/4G63 hybrid and it is a massive pain to access belts and pulleys. Not a lot of tricks from my side; just the sweating and choice words.
Nice to see the build coming along. If you bought a crank why didn’t you go with a 94mm? A set of custom pistons would fit 150mm rods and just drive better.
Omgggg I remember when we were all just focused about what sort of headlights you wanted to go with.. then the dyno session... Excited to see this car back.
Im glad you guys replaced your oil cooler. I knew someone who decided to do 3 rounds of sonic cleaning on his and his new motor ended up grenading itself. He ended up doing the process another time on another engine same outcome. What an expensive lesson to learn.
As an Evo guy this is a great video and the advice given is very sound, I know from experience, keep up the great work can’t wait to see the end results🤙
Since the oil cooler did seem like it was contaminated another thing you could have done other than cleaning it out is to put a filter element between the cooler and return line. This could be done if a cooler replacement couldn't be had or needed a quick fix. You could also put one before the cooler to help prevent contamination in the future.
The trick on the power steering pump is to understand that mitsubishi made it that way to weed out the weak and ensure only dedicated enthusiasts would own these cars and enjoy them.
New oil filters have a guarantee on the box. Reminds me of a great man that once said, “Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it 'guaranteed', I will. I got spare time.” 😂
Sigh…all the late night trauma working on my 91 GSX 4G63 comes flooding back. Every time I built that engine, I would say “maybe this time” 😂 albeit my builds were nowhere near this level. I was just a kid, on a limited budget - GM MAF translator in hand, and all night pulls on the street twisting those three dials, looking at blinking lights on that circuit board in a vane attempt to achieve a passable Air/Fuel Ratio.
An engine, not a motor 😋 (motors are electric, although I do call engine mounts motor mounts still). Amazing build, the Evo 6 got me into Japanese imports back in 99!
10:1 CR is quite high for a classic 4G63. The stock is like 8.8:1 or something on an Evo 6. On Evo 9 it has MIVEC to compensate the high CR and timing.
Soo happy to see this build again. I know how much you love this car, and rightfully so. Evos are killer cars. Can't wait to see the final product, it's gonna rip. Sorry STI guys, Pete's right, it's just a superior car.. Ps please tune the sh&t out of it.
As much as your right to say the oil cooler maybe dirty and not worth the risk replacement is not always necessary. Serck motorsports clean all forms of coolers for elite motorsport teams and now with a base in the states I'd say its worth getting a quote from them before buying a new unit and fabricating it onto the car. I know your Canada but mail order could work I'd hope?
DSM's have got to be one of the most unforgiving engines when it comes to tuning. They will damned sure make BIG power, but you get frisky with the timing, or it runs just the slightest bit lean, and you will pay for it (literally).
I'm gonna have to disagree PT. After watching you fiddle around with a transfer case and power steering pump I'm gonna stay with Subaru. They have their faults but atleast you can work on it. Also i seem to remember a certain abandoned STi still running and moving under its own power at the end of its build series. 😄
Not using a set of knock ears or similar is what caused this, regardless of comp ratio, experience with the engine, experience in tuning, tuner should have some form of independent knock detection device connected to his ears and should be actively listening for knock, knocking enough for it to be audible on the video and for it to annihilate the motor, would have clearly heard that through a set of knock ears, well before anything let go, and even before anything was close to being damaged. A garden hose hooked up to a set of ear muffs would suffice, I run a ‘seniors’ handheld microphone that’s had the mic extended onto a big metal clip that can be clipped onto the block, and a set of earphone used, can hear every little noise, even the dbw actuator, it’s that sensitive. Regardless, damage is done, hoping everything goes to plan this time around.
@@speedacademy yea prob should go back and watch it to be honest. Must be more to it than meets the eye if he couldn’t hear it through the ears then, 4g aren’t that noisy that you wouldn’t hear it over the ambient engine noise.
The tuner ingnored the danger to manifold warning
Funny but that was an eclipse, even though the engine is the same. At least that car(the eclipse) didn't go into space...
Finally Evo episode coming after rest for so long 😊❤
@@MrBenstero bro nobody likes a smartass
No 3 nitrous bottles. LoL fast but furious

That Eclipse had the crappy Dodge FWD engine. No 4G63T

Same situation, left for a while, back for 4g63
Such a shame how this ended last time. Well on it's way to destroying a STI. Good to see it rising from the grave to live again.
I LOVE THAT YOU GUYS HAVE PICKED UP THIS BUILD AGAIN!
FYI: Balance shafts have nothing to do with whether or not the engine builder balanced the rotating assembly.
They're used to cancel out the vibrations you get as a result of all the pistons stopping and reversing direction (at tdc & bdc) at the same time in an inline engine.
I was wondering about that too.
no, the engines designed balance (mitsubishi not builder) depends on if you can delete the balance shafts, you can do them just find the toyotas 2AZ engines, but not in others
one of my favorite cars in your stable, I'm so glad it's finally getting brought back to life 🤙🤙🤙
Awesome to see this build revived. Such a shame your efforts in building the last engine were ruined by the tuner as I thought you did a great job building it
Nice to see this build back!!! Would like to see the amber side marker back, this car need more contrast on the outside 🤪
Now you know why tuner need to use knock sensors.
"maybe I can reach around the back"
DP, knowing you as well as I do, you left me hanging there, a golden opportunity.
I came through in the end (that's what she said)
I feel your pain on the organization thing. When I bought my Evo as a rolling shell, the guy I bought it from gave me a 5 gallon bucket with all the bolts for the drive train just thrown in it.

The evo...my best project yet from you guys..glad to see it coming back😊
For the power steering on my Evo 8 I just unbolt the passenger motor mount and Jack up the motor on that side. Once you've done that you can slide the bolt through one of the holes in the pulley.
I’m soooo thankful you guys are so knowledgeable and share your knowledge. That oil cooler is a huge mistake people make when they blow their engines.

4g63 for the win!!! I own 3 4g63 builds and I enjoy it! 1 evo and two 6 bolt dsm builds. So glad to see the evo back!!
Oh man I am so glad this is back. I am waiting for my Evo6 to be US legal for import... Your original Evo series was a definite inspiration.
This was the build that got me into the channel, was sad when it gave up the ghost but glad to see its back!!
Adrian is a damn surgeon! Love these builds and all the details!!!

Wow. I practically stopped watching this channel after this car disappeared. Thanks for bringing it back.

Still risking it. The only way to go is replace it. Debris can be lodged and come free down the road
LOL, dropping the bolts for the fuel rail... Just as if I was doing the job. Classic
ID are recommended because they’re hands down the best aftermarket injector on the market. 👍
They just use old tech bosch injectors. The latest bosch are much better.
@@intrepidrouge there is way more to it than just that.

I wish I knew about that ranger vehicle dolly awhile ago! I need one because I’m always taking suspension apart in the front of my cars.
There are holes on the ps pump pulley to use the socket and rachet but needs to be done with the belt off so u can spin the pulley and make it easy..

How ironic, they start the episode with a headgasket failure and ending it bashing on Subaru. :p

Coming back 💪 stronger!
Can we get a full Jackie Chan spec EVO, Police Cops Edition?

As someone who spent way more time then should have been required to replace an alternator in their EVO X, I understand the struggle.
Still find it hard to believe a tuner was tuning the motor without listening for knock
