Every so often I come back to this album. Whipgrass just touches me in a way that makes me feel like I’m a kid again. Justin has a certain magic to his music that nobody can replicate. Wish I could talk to him about this work!
This album is just… so comforting. It feels personal, relaxed. It feels like taking a guitar while camping, the sunset going down, accompanied by close friends, cigarette and a smile. I love this.
This is crazy! Music never lies. I was confusing his voice with Bruce Springsteen and, all of a sudden, he started singing Bruce's song?! Oh my God! This shit hit me so hard that happy tears started falling from my eyes... Damn! This cat is full of many beautiful inspirations and influences. His album 'home is' is so BLUES, with talks about Robert Johnson, Louis Armstrong, etc; HIP HOP, with the Jurassic5 and others... A real musician! I'm deeply in love with him... Please, use good headphones or speakers to enjoy it all amazingly!
This album singlehandedly inspired me to make music, to help me realize that I can make music too. Thank you for sharing your art with the world Justin Vernon. We will never die
Have you started? I'm keen to hear what you have so far... I'm also working on my own album, inspired by Bon Iver, Gregory Alan Isakov, Kurt Vile etc. But Bon Iver was the main source of motivation a few years back. Now I'm finally putting it into action I guess.
@@macaroon147 I began making music about five years ago and have put out a couple albums over that time. You can find most of my music on my youtube channel. I think you might be able to find a comment I posted here many years ago too. The amateur quality of Vernon's old solo albums inspired me to put out my stuff despite how bad it might sound, after all, we all start out sounding not so good. My oldest stuff is hidden away on my old soundcloud. I'm happy for you, I hope you're having fun and enjoying your time making music. Enjoying making music is a very important part of making music too! :D
Hands down my favorite work of yours Mr. Vernon. Thank you for blessing us all with these gems. Your music has truly gotten me thru many phases of life. Rock on !
wow this album leveled me today. Feeling the stresses of schoolwork and meeting deadlines. But this just set me straight. Gave me such an honest outlook on the present and immediate future
Beautiful and haunting. I've always been a fan of Justin Vernon's work (particularly Bon Iver). It always special when someone can create a piece of art or music that touches the deepest part of others and carries them elsewhere in some way or another, almost trancendentally.
amazing comment, 3 years later...was justin there at your wedding ;)? all the best , i hope the love shared 3 years ago is still real today.... and lotr RULES!
This album seems to grow in obscurity: it starts with normal folk songs but goes to post-rock after a burst of experimentation in the center. This album seems to embody Justin Vernon's musical journal as far.
You never cease to amaze my emotions always on point with your spectacular vibes continue what you do your music is healing and helping peace brother -josh
Justin Dalke not just raw :-) I have been a fan of his beautiful heartfelt music for a while now... He is an inspiration to the music industry his songs feel like hes playing on my heart strings....he is unique and his work is stunning
+charlotte bradley Totally agree, he is my hero. You might like one of mine- hope you don't mind :)soundcloud.com/billyjeffreyjnr/billy-jeffrey-jnr-eternal-blue
If I’m not mistaken it was around 2011/2012 that I remember finding the songs on this album scattered ambiguously all over RUclips. This was around the time Justin was starting to go a bit mainstream, having just been nominated for an Emmy for Bon Iver (album). Back then, each time I “stumbled” onto one of the songs on this album I thought I struck gold. Indeed, We Will Never Die is perhaps one of the most impactful songs of my adult life. I immigrated to the US 10 years ago and through all the highs and lows, this song has been a constant companion, acting as a source of purpose and fulfillment. Thank you so much for aggregating all the songs of this album in one place.
I have a signed hard copy of this and we went to see vernon play these songs at the house of rock in ec (2005 i think). he's an even better dude than he is a musician (hard to imagine, but true)
Is it just me, or do I hear elements of 21 Moonwater on "The Orient and the Gatsby's Slew of Choices" ...some of the background broken/looped vocal sounds...??
You put that on GODDAMN SPOTIFY NOW!!!
spotify robs from the artists

Listening to this in COVID19. First listened to it in 2015. Nostalgia. Justin is a blessing to mankind!!!!

Exactly the same to me!
How does this man have so much music to his name... he is an unbelievable artist really
Couldn't agree less
@@hemishrp ?
@@kadeschmidt1214 LOL couldn't agree more** my bad. That was funny
This is the most raw and emotional album I've ever heard
Listening to this at work is so weird
I'm about to fcking cry listening to "Sides" at my desk
"Redemption 1 (An Army Man and His Self-Discovery)" is the most incredible thing I've ever heard
"Nothing Better Than a Journey to You" is the one
Listening to this is probably the best decision I've ever made
Ring it out, most underrated Justin Vernon song ever?! I can't get over that melody
Agree 1000% Such a clever way of turning that phrase over and over and finding new meaning each time.
agreed
Got a slight Counting Crows flavour
This may be my favorite work of his... It is unpolished and bare in a way that is so transparently passionate and honest.
+Dallas Brown totally. "ring out" and "we will never die" just moves me.
I think you may love "We Can look up" 😉
It's made with one of his oldest band : Mount Vernon. And it's golden
@@benjamindevaux5891have you heard ‘morning’ by Mount Vernon? It’s incredible, and especially considering he was in high school when he wrote it
This album is just… so comforting. It feels personal, relaxed. It feels like taking a guitar while camping, the sunset going down, accompanied by close friends, cigarette and a smile. I love this.
Anytime one hears unheard music from Justin you know it’s going to be a good day! Very raw and pure.
Hearing this for the first time. So many emotions, such great talent. Justin is Midas.

I still think this is the best of Justin's solo albums. Would kill to have a legit CD copy of it.
Derp download the audio and burn it to a cd, problem solved.

Didn't you guys read the 'legit' in CD copy?

I love all of you for loving this. Justin Vernon is the man
At 53:50. Oh my goodness, this is so perfect.
It sounds almost as lonely as something off of For Emma.
It sounds like eddie vedder songs for the movie into the wild
i would kill for a vinyl of this.. justin your music is beautiful.
I couldn’t live without music
Thanks Justin, and to the person that found this gem
'Above the Code' is such a beautiful song. I love this album.

To the world he may be Bon Iver, he'll always remain Justin to me. The kid who came and put his heart and soul in his records. Magnificent
39:00 'The Orient and the Gatsby's...' sounds like a blueprint for 33 GOD, with the left/right vocal snippets and airy drum sounds
Tributary sounds like 666 as well. It’s incredible how he reused all these aspects of old songs for bon iver
You gotta love this, and thank the world that this beauty exists.
Raw and real. Thank you JV.
