I am ethiopian... I used to take off my shoes to play football it is just much more comfortable and better control.... What is so amazing about Abebe is in Rome he shouldnt even be there because he was a replacement for Wami Biratu who got injured just before the olympic. For the Rome olympics he should not have went becuase of the hernia surgery he had less than 6 weeks away from the race.... He is the greatest!!! for the greatest Ethiopian long distance runner you probably never heard of,,, Look up Maj. Wami Birratu.
The reason Bekila was able to run barefoot is because he had to start off as a child running a barefoot and had to run miles and miles to and from school everyday. If you want to try it you should first try running on grass then dirt and build your way up. You have to have calluses on your feet. It takes time to build just like endurance. You didn’t go out your first day running 6 miles.
I actually ran lots of marathons barefoot when I was younger. We were very poor & had no $ to buy running shoes. Only when we (myself & sisters) finished the race, we would realize that there were thorns/glass in our feet.
Thank you so much for doing this! Huge respect! Abebe Bikila is something else No words to even try to describe it. Deserves billions and billions of recognition. Ultimate legend
It is great to see videos like this. People often forget about true legends because so much time has passed. Bikila is in my Rushmore along with Jack Johnson, Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson. These legends layed the foundations that make it way easier for guys in their lane to succeed today. REST IN IMORTALITY!
With the respect he gets for running barefoot, it is also a fact that it was so hot that day, that they delayed the start so that it would go on and end at night when it was cooler. Add that to the impact on his feet. Thanks for this video.
I remember reading reports of the 1960 Olympic marathon at age 9, and thinking, "This must be some kind of a superman. An ordinary person just couldn't do it." And to some extent, I still think that today.
Abebe Bekila the first African Olympic Gold Medalist. The only athlete in the world to have consecutive Olympic Marathon Gold medal. The only athlete to broke world record in Olympic Marathon twice. Rest in Peace legendary!
sir im no athlete anymore always loved sports but your videos are so good and just wanted to thank you for showing these great track and field athletes and the science and new ones coming up great channel
Have to admit i knew nothing about him before. His style does not look fast at all, so deceptive! Love to see a few more videos on runners from years gone by...
3:08 is one of the key notions observed in Christopher McDougall’s Born to Run. Essentially, McDougall believes that the Tarahumara tribe can run 100 mile weeks for 20+ years without injury because they run barefoot and instinctually land on their forefoot, thus preventing the injuries that accompany excessive heel striking. These guys are quick too, I think one of them ran 2:11 in the LA marathon (with no training plan or structured diet)
What I like about your videos is that the information is portrayed without you being conceited or a jerk. Almost feels like talking to a buddy,so kudos for that. Anyways, running barefoot is hard and painful (I've tried it too) I know that he most definitely walked/ran barefoot a very high percentage of his life, but that doesn't take away from his amazing performances specially that first legendary first place marathon where all his competitors had shoes in that blistering Rome afternoon. I tried jogging at 5:30 min per km pace for 5 km on the road, I live in Mexico, and I ended up with a bleeding right foot because I stepped on vidrios de caguama (40 Oz beer shattered glass from street fights) I'll probably never do it again. You should tell us why he wasn't wearing shoes in the first place.
Awesome comment thanks! From what I read he had shoes that didn't fit right and caused him blisters during the days building up before the race. Finally he simply decided to go barefoot and then he won the gold. Such a unique story. And wow, vidrio en tus pies sounds terrible. Cuidado en las calles.
inside information we fought Italians the 1st and 2nd world war the Warriors Ethiopians defatted Italian modern armies barefoot so he just reminded the Italian who he was, he is the same warrior class that defatted Italy.
@@TotalRunningProductions He clearly was not used to running in shoes. It is hard to find shoes which gives the same running feel like barfoot. His barfoot run was his 2. best running time. The only better time he had was 4 years later in Japan. So he needed years to find and adapt to shoes, which don't put him in a disadvantage.
You don’t just start running barefoot. You train barefoot and race barefoot. East Africans don’t have or wear shoes? The world has changed. Also Mr. Bikila was rich in even today’s standard and could definitely afford to buy the best in his time.
Back in 2010 and 2011, I ran two 7 mile road races and a 13.1 mile road race completely barefoot. I finished the half-marathon in 1:56:57 or 8:57 per mile. That was nowhere near as close to the half-marathon I ran in the same area in 2014. I finished in 1:27:00 or 6:38 per mile but that time, I was wearing a pair of old Vibram Fivefinger Sprints from 2010. That extra protection for your feet on the asphalt makes a huge difference when you're trying to run faster!
I switched to forefoot strike 10-15 years ago, moved to minimalist running footwear (mostly), and never looked back. I mean let's be clear I'm a pretty casual runner and I'm heavy and slow, but between sandals, thongs, and actual barefoot I've logged about 850 km so far (just the stuff I got on GPS). Even ran a 5k race barefoot once, on a mix of gravel and concrete, after my sandals failed me just before the start. That was actually really great, except for the blood blister I got on my big toe at the end. These days I mostly run in sandals (Luna), and hell yeah I'd recommend it. Just take your time easing in, because it takes some adaptation and you'll probably get injured if you rush the switch.
My shoe got spiked off of me during an XC race and I ran barefoot on one foot for about 1.5 miles. There was some roots and pebbles that hurt but it was pretty much on grass and it hurt to step on it a couple of days after the race.
It’s not just callouses you need but also foot strength if you’re going to run barefoot if you’ve been running in casts, I mean standard running shoes. Try some minimalist shoes. They were a game changer for me since I found regular running shoes to mess up my form and cause injury.
I feel pain in my private parts just thinking about running barefoot on that surface. I once lost a shoe in a cross country race. Thought it would be easier to run with no shoes than one shoe. Then we hit the section with the small gravel, and had to do that part a few times. I faded to nearly last. Luckily, the coaches still selected me for the top 7 to run at Nationals. Sometimes I have dreams where I am walking or running outside with no shoes, and every step is painful.
When it comes to running barefoot you have to get used to it, just like to running. When you start running you won't go marathon. I sometimes run barefoot in summer (in forest), at first my feet and calves hurt, but after a some running I could go close to 10 miles no problem.
Abebe Bikila is an amazing personality and one of my heroes. However, you trying to run barefoot never had done this before and then declaring this to be unbelievable is simalar to a couch potato trying to run at all for the first time in his life and then saying that it's impossible and nobody should do that. I myself have run a marathon barefoot on asphalt. Yes, I'm a barefoot running enthusiast, but from the other side - I'm just a regular person, an average Joe... So if I can do that, everyone can do that. Well, the speed at which it was done - it's a completely different talk.. 🙂
I did hear that. I also heard that it was because he missed the test not because he was found to be on any performance enhancing drugs. Always looking into it.
This proves ones again that forefoot strike is one of the worst myths. If you look at the east Africans in this video, they all land flat footed (mid-foot).
He's exceptional athlete of all time! Records can be broken, but running barefoot, winning and breaking world record?! Only one man's history - Legendary Abebe Bikila! As you said in African people may run barefooted, but not on cobblestone for 42 kilometers! ruclips.net/video/ijk72IL6BDw/видео.html
Have you ever attempted to run barefoot before? I think I'll stick to my trainers for now.
I am ethiopian... I used to take off my shoes to play football it is just much more comfortable and better control.... I used to Sprint for 150 - 200m on asphalt barefoot when I was younger. Now for some reason I cannot even go longer than 20m
Here in Jamaica we use to run barefoot at a young age too.
Unforgatable. A true hero!
Ethiopia we love and is proud of our beloved Abebe Bikila. The great one.Our hero.ANBESSA.
Us Americans love him also! As a distance runner decades ago, I wanted so much to be like him. He symbolizes what distance running is.
Need a movie made about this legend, at least a good documentary
There’s already a movie about him titled “The Athlete” although it focuses more on his life after his running days, it’s still a good watch
In the movie " The marathon man " you will see clips of Abebe Bikila as the actor ( Dustin Hoffman ) runs for his life being chased by drug pins.
@@nebiyouelias961 the movie mostly covers his later years not his glory days
WOOOWWWW!!! What an inspiration!!! From one runner to another, I am completely stoked!!
Abebe Bikila is simply one of the greatest in the athletics world. Breaking a world record barefoot in an Olympics? Incredible!
Thank you so much for doing this! Huge respect!
Abebe Bikila is something else
No words to even try to describe it. Deserves billions and billions of recognition. Ultimate legend
A Japanese family returned a ring after 66 years that Abebe forgot in his room in Tokyo.
Damn
Hey that’s awesome , is there any way we can discuss compensation for the ring. He’s my grandfather.
It is great to see videos like this. People often forget about true legends because so much time has passed.

I could not imagine doing that for 1 miles let alone 26.2
THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME !!!
Running was his passion and he lost the use of his legs. That breaks my heart.
♥️😞
I love this guy, great job brother. Thanks for the uploads
The original African marathoner! One of the very best of all time!
what a legend
Ethiopian names are always so fun to say. They just flow well when you say it
My real hero !
Another great video. Such a sad ending to this man's life.
Great video. Bikila is a legend.
Finally I love Bikila thank you he is a beast
Great job remembering a great one!
With the respect he gets for running barefoot, it is also a fact that it was so hot that day, that they delayed the start so that it would go on and end at night when it was cooler. Add that to the impact on his feet. Thanks for this video.
You should make videos about race tips, like mike race tips, 800, 400, and etc
YES I NEED TIPS FOR 800

Funny self-experiment and footage! Great analysis of an outstanding runner! It's more than today's world record times that counts.
Thanks for this!!
Wow I love your videos I wish to see your channel grow up more and more
I LOVE SPORT
When winning the Olympic marathon just isn’t good enough
His running form is interesting. Unlike most of runners, his back kick was low and his form was so smooth and he seemed comfortable like you said.
sir im no athlete anymore always loved sports but your videos are so good and just wanted to thank you for showing these great track and field athletes and the science and new ones coming up great channel
Love you my canteri Ethiopia
one of your best because it may me look for more info . keep up the good work !

The best of the best EVER !!!!!!!!! Period.
There's this 1 girl on my XC and Track team, and she goes without shoes on runs about 1/3 of the time. INSANE!! I have respect for her.

Omg you lied so much.... He can afford it but he want to be different....
Abebe Bikila is the god all other Ethiopians distance legends go on pilgrimage to. That is a fact.

who ever gave thumbs dawn to this video got to be heartless!
Cool
Grow up in Jamaica we use to take off our shoes to run and also to play soccer, bare foot is more natural for running if you get used to it.
I winced just watching theme, let alone doing it myself... madness

I shuffle. Literally have no back kick and barely a knees drive because I’m not going to force it
I can barely run sub 6 with shoes. Can't imagine barefoot
Does anyone know any other Athletics that go in depth like this other than The Way to Win?

This guy is a joke when he attempted to run barefoot. I laughed at him so loud. Greatings from East Africa.
I guess shoe companies must have hated him :)
vdsterren nike be like we will sponsor you,... hmmm but how
i got my cross country pr barefoot this year, but that was on grass lol
What a god

Very informative as always..is your gf still running ?
