  • This installment to the Oingo Boingo extended mix series takes us all the way back to 1980, where Oingo Boingo released their EP on the A&M distributed I.R.S. Records. Famous for it's use of one of Louis Wain's cat paintings for it's front cover, this EP is a fine example of the band's early sound just a year prior to the release of their debut album.
For this extended mix, I did what we would call a 3 in 1, where I did not one, not two, but three extended mixes out of three separate tracks. Considering the track list of the EP is limited to only 4 tracks, I said to myself, "why not combine each of these extended mixes into one big extended mix?" Thus, we're given this extended mix suite track.
The EP in question has 4 tracks, but as you can tell, there is one track missing; "Only A Lad" being the track that I omitted. This was done on purpose due to the fact that "Only A Lad" was later refined and became the title track to the band's 1981 debut studio album. I already did an extended mix of "Capitalism," a track from said 1981 debut album, but I hope to revisit that album someday in the near future. So for the time being, I've decided to leave "Only A Lad" alone.
This extended mix suite track includes extended mixes of the band's cover of "Violent Love" by Willie Dixon, and 2 original tracks, which are "Ain't This The Life," and "I'm So Bad."
The process for making these extended mixes is the same as it's always been: using Demucs4 HT on mvsep.com to separate the instruments and vocals, and then cobble together the actual extended mixes in Audacity.
I sourced the audio for the 3 EP tracks from the 2021 Rubellan Remasters CD reissue of "Only A Lad," where the entire EP is in it as bonus tracks.
I really hope you enjoyed this, as it was quite a lot of fun to do! More to come in the near future!
    Tracklist:
    1) Violent Love 0:00
    2) Ain't This The Life 4:14
    3) I'm So Bad 9:06

this music is brilliant and super original and is a new view of ska, that commonly sounds boring and has a well defined patterns. This is directly impressive, seems music created for movies like later did Danny Elfman with Tim burton, absolutely a jewel for my ears.

I agree! I've a button/pin with this album on it (from my father), and I somehow have never heard the first song on here lol! Oingo Boingo really stands the test of time for sure.

No doubt Danny Elfman was influenced by Devo lol. This is about the year that "Freedom of Choice" came out, and you can tell.
