  • Sunday marks 25 years since a Black teen was shot and killed by a St. Petersburg police officer - a flashpoint in the city that erupted into days of unrest.
In 1996, Tyron Lewis was stopped by police at the intersection of 18th Avenue South and 16th Street. A white officer shot and killed the unarmed 18-year-old.
The death splintered the area, the city on the verge of chaos. The unrest went on for days with rioting, rock-throwing, and fires, putting St. Pete in the national spotlight. The anger and violence erupted again when the shooting was ruled justified and the officers cleared.

Like why aren't you saying that two officers had pulled up behind Lewis at a red light on 18th Avenue South and 16th Street South for speeding and Lewis with a friend refused to unlock the doors or get out, one officer stood in front of the car, gun drawn, and said Lewis kept edging up on him and knocked him onto the hood, of course the officer feared for his life and fired, if Lewis listened to the cops he'd be alive now.
Edit : before anyone want to start a war over my comment I just let you know I will not start to argue with anyone so don't even bother commenting...

How come no one got the beginning of the story? The part where the cop was about to get ran over by the driver? I was a kid (in Colombia) and I still remember the real report. Oh yeah, and you forgot about the police helicopter being shot down 😂.

Comply, you wont die. Tragic but completely avoidable if he had just complied. Who is teaching our kids that it is Ok to assault the police, to flee from the police and to disrespect the police..... oh just the media, the music industry, some community leaders and local culture. Facts care neither about your feelings nor about the color of your skin.

It was a tragedy, But I really don't care for this being a BLACK thing. I think this is a human rights thing, and color has no place in it. These are people, not black, white or any other option. Don't get caught up in color when it should be about the person. Many people of all colors and lack there of have suffered like this .Do the right thing, add other people's names to the list, find others suffering, then all can push together. To many times people are split by color, and many do it to themselves.

Lmao are you serious? You’re one of those people that says “I don’t see color” well guess what, even if YOU don’t see it the racism is still there from the system structure itself, you just don’t understand what racism is at all. It’s actually disgusting that you’re trying to erase the history of black oppression by the state and minimize it
