That's awesome that you just jumped in! Welcome to the sewing party! 😂 Woohoo!! It's addicting! That's so exciting. I love it when someone starts sewing. A few things I would recommend: for a boxy woven tank pattern...I was obsessed last summer with a pattern like this so I found two...look up a Grainline Studio Willow tank. Its a great pattern but how they apply bias tape is fantastic. You don't pre press it which helps. Like the double fold thing. Its so much easier to apply if you don't have to do that. Seriously, after using their method, I won't apply bias tape any other way. I think they have a sewalong video on their youtube page. I personally don't like the store bought bias tape because I hate the way it feels. I made like 4 or 5 woven tanks last summer. All of them were linen or a cotton linen blend. There is another pattern that is similar Helen's Closet Ashton Tank. Its even a little more cropped which you might like more. They have a facing option so you don't have to use the bias tape at all. As far as fabric, I would definitely recommend cotton linen blends or rayon linen blends to start with if you want to save some money. They are cheaper and more readily available than 100% linen and for a new sewist, might not be a bad idea. I have been sewing for 12 years, started with quilting, started making clothes 4 years ago, and I still use cheaper fabric the first time or more I make a pattern until I really feel like I have mastered it. Good luck with your sewing journey! You are going to do awesome! And its so cool that you are doing this with your daughter. 💓
I’m so excited to stumble across your videos… Im in pretty much the same boat as you. I have done some basic things like coasters totes, I feel I have mastered those.. I’m getting ready to JUST START, JUST TRY, JUST GO FOR IT, with making clothes…
I'm so excited about your sewing journey. We all begin somewhere, and look, look where you have come. You have gained knowledge. It is so exciting too that your daughter has this interest. I'm really happy for you. You will find your way. You are right too, there are so many videos out there to help. I will be following you. Happy sewing.
Bias binding is difficult. More advanced sewing machines have attachment that feed the bias through. I like making fully lined items or using interfacing for necklines and armholes. Very easy once you learn how, there are a few extra steps like stay stitching and understitching. I am only writing these terms so you know what videos to search. Happy sewing!
Welcome to the world of sewing!! I'm so excited for you and I love that you're jumping right in with clothes! I also can't be bothered with dishtowels and such. To address your question about tags, there are tons of super cute premade tags out there you can buy. However, if I need to know front from back I just take some thread in a contrasting color and hand stitch a tiny x on the inside of the collar where a tag would go. Its quick, subtle and free!
I use scraps of bias binding from old projects and write on it with a permanent pen and then sew it over part of an inside seam. I like to mark what year I finished each garment and mark fabric composition like linen or cotton
I'm also starting to sew this year so it would be really nice to watch someone going through the same learning process, hope you keep uploading. Good luck!
You're doing so well! I've been sewing for a bit over a year, and it's amazing to look back and see your progress. When I started, I made all the same mistakes! My first few garments were ROUGH. But you really do improve with every item you make. Bedsheets are perfect to practice on! For shopping for fabric, always check out the clearance section or remnant section of fabric stores and fabric websites. That was what I did when I first wanted to start buying proper fabric. Keep going! You're going to improve every time you sew. :)
Also see if your area has a craft thrift store or creative reuse store. They are becoming more popular and tend to have tons of stuff for all sorts of crafts but all the ones I’ve gone to have fabric remnants and notions donated. I’ve gotten yards of linen and wool and boiled wool for so cheap at these places and gotten most of my buttons from there. It’s such a fun adventure if you have one close

You can use a ribbon for the tag! It can be a pretty satin one, or it can be from cotton twill.

@@chrissyhilton6957 do it! I honestly think it’s the best way to learn. You just have to dive in and make mistakes with cheap fabric!

You have made great progress. Keep up the great work. A magnetic seam guide is a useful tool for sewing straight lines.
