  • If you've ever visited Jerome, you know that it is full of ghost stories, legends, and history. However, just outside of town is a little gem called the Gold King Mine & Ghost Town. We love all things ghost town and historical! With that in mind, we packed up the car and headed north to see what this little place was all about.

At Gold King Mine, we saw a lot of antique cars, trucks, and motorcycles. We explored a number of old historic buildings and some replicas with relics and other fascinating antiques. Later we toured the petting zoo area filled with chickens and a few goats and pigs. Finally, we saw what was the old mine shaft and asked a number of questions about the history of the old town that once stood there.
Gold King Mine & Ghost Town was once an old mining prospect town called Haynes. Located near Jerome, Arizona, a copper mining boomtown, Haynes was thought to possibly have copper veins itself running through the area. Despite the richness in the hills of Jerome, no copper was found in the prospecting camp until decades later when the mine was bought out by another company. Unfortunately, it was never enough to provide an income worth sustaining operations, and the mine was shut down.
Sometime later the property was purchased by Don Robertson. Don began moving old buildings from nearby towns onto his property and found a home for his collection of old antique cars. In the 1980s, he also began crafting some of his own replica buildings. This once small town grew to become its own ghost town where it hosts a wealth of collectibles and eclectic relics from mining history. Some of the collection dates back to over 100 years old such as a 1902 Studebaker Electric or an old boarding house built in 1909.
Also among the items to see is a sawmill with a functioning saw that creates large wood slabs for sale and Big Bertha, a large gas engine built around 1930 rescued from an old Bagdad, Arizona mine. The thing still runs and certainly is a sight to see, hear and feel!
Also on the property is the original mine shaft from the prospecting days. The 1270 foot deep shaft is now plugged up but enough shows to really give an idea of the kind of narrow conditions miners would descend into. It really puts things into perspective!
Gold King Mine & Ghost Town really is a step back in time and a look into the life and love of Don Robertson's collection. If you're looking for something that is off the beaten path, you can't go wrong here!

Won't lie... we kind of love Jerome even if we don't have time to go up much. We're slowly starting to explore it more and have a lot more places we want to check out. A stay at the old Jerome Grand Hotel is definitely on the list as well as a deep dive of some of the old original buildings and its history. We were going to try and squeeze more in this last trip but ran out of time. Probably for the best because that means more research can be done!

Good video. It's such a fun place to explore. The now owner and his son are really nice. The woman in the gift shop when we were there is the daughter of the guy who passed.
I have a video of Big Bertha on my channel if you're interested at all. $20 and they will fire it up for ya!

Fun fact: Don Roberson brought all the buildings and all the vehicles to his "ghost town" over many decades. The buildings were a mixture of old and new and if they looked too new, he'd paint them with used motor oil to give them an aged, rustic look. He told me this, himself!

@@Truckguy2007 Lucky you; when he passed on I'm sure that a lot of knowledge about Arizona, mining and vehicles was also lost. His daughter and SIL seem to be doing a good job of running the place and making improvements....

Yeah, Jerome is a fantastic place and easily one of our faves. Small town, but so much packed in there and so much more for us to explore when we can.

Interesting! I imagine there's a lot more history to the buildings than what is made available to the public just passing through there. Thanks for sharing! 👍

Well, at least you got to stand in front of the most interesting vehicle and the one frequently featured in magazines/oil paintings, etc. Too bad you did not notice it.... (the Corbit truck)
