WAS NICE TO SEE THIS AGAIN THIS WAY. I DROVE IT BACK IN EARLY 2000. IT HASN'T CHANGED. MY MOTHER WAS WITH US AND SHE STILL TALKS ABOUT HOW SCARED SHE WAS. THINK MOST OF THE CARS MUST HAVE HAD TO GET THEIR BRAKES REDONE AFTER GETTING TO THE BOTTOM. I USED SECOND MOST OF THE WAY. THE VERDE RAILROAD IS A NICE TRIP TO TAKE. IT'S ABOUT 4 HOURS ON A NARROW GAUGE TRACK. BEAUTIFUL SCENERY

I think it was mostly copper that was mined there. Was there in 1974 on our way to Sedona for our honeymoon. Sure looked a lot different then! Now looks like one big tourist you- know- what! But then, there's not a lot of mining going on now days, so they have to make a living somehow. Thanks for the memories. It is a beautiful drive!

Really nice day for sight seeing Jerome. The homes close to the road but, the one with the balcony on the 2nd floor hung out to the road. The driveways, to narrow, some had poor visibility for exiting once pulled in. If you ever wanted a maintenance free yard, that would be the perfect place to live. A few really nice homes. Great views of the mountains. I agree, they have some beautiful sunrises.

Yes, the Mingus Mountain Road with 158 switchbacks.
A BIG congratulations to you for being willing to drive it! Especially in a large vehicle.
My GF and I visited that part of AZ back in October 2005, and she did the Mingus Mt Rd drive to Jerome. Jerome is 5000 feet in elevation.
My GF's sister lives in Skull Valley, which is outside of Prescott and the locals pronounce it PRESS - kuht, rather than Press-scott.
After visiting Jerome, we went over to Sedona and spent the afternoon there and then, drive up to Flagstaff.
If you haven't been there already, visit Virginia City, NV, which is in the mountains east of Carson City. It's a historic mining town sort of like Jerome. Virginia City is 6200 feet in elevation.

Hey Russ Jerome reminds me of my home county in West Virginia! McDowell County once produced more bituminous coal than any county in the state. In the 1920’s it was home to over 100, 000 people of all nationalities and races. Today the deep mines are gone and coal is dying as a fuel source, even though will find the ravages of early mining everywhere. Homes and business were built right up against the road and on the side of the mountains. Today there are RV camp grounds and Airbnb’s available for the tourist. Railroads are right beside the highway and provide ample opportunities for viewing a working railroad system. Come visit in the summer or autumn! My wife and I drove. Our thirty-one foot C class motorhome through Jerome in the autumn of 2018. It was an exciting drive to say the least! 👍🤠🇺🇸🙏✝️

I've travelled through this whole area over many years. Camped in Dead horse state park several times in my tent. Also wild camped atop Mingus mountain, watching the hand gliders take off over Cottonwood vicinity . So atmospheric and uncommercialised compared to lots of other small towns. Long may it remain the same. Oldtimer Englishman from Shropshire reliving some past adventures.

The ghost town is further up the mountain away from the main part of town where you drove thru. What is the Ghost town is where the mining village was. I went there years ago and toured it. It had Dr. office, dentist, numerous other buildings including the old machinery used in the mining process. It also had a souvenir shop. Very interesting. If you make the drive you must visit the mining village which is the Ghost town.

Cottonwood was a nice town. We camped at Dead Horse State Park in May of '16. Drove through Jerome and couldn't find a place to park the pickup. Driving around was like parking wars for spots. Crazy. Wished we could have walked around town. Did get to do the Verde Canyon Railroad trip as well as visit a lot of native American places in the area.

That road is a lot better than it used to be. My dad lived in Jerome as a child. He was living there when the jail slid down the hill during one of the earthquakes. He said the kids would rock the school bus on those roads through Mingus Mountain. The road in the early sixties was bad enough... they were worse. He drove us on the old road going south from Prescott to 93. This was when they were starting the new road. It was like those films you see of cliff hugging roads from other countries you see today. We used to drive through the Salt River canyon every year and the game was to see who could find the most new burned out vehicles on the side of the mountain that went over the edge the year prior... that and slug bug. The old road was worse than any scary movie. Especially when riding with my dad or an uncle that has driven that road as many times as they have. There was a reason the lines behind trucks on those road got so long. People knew better than to try and pass. Not my elders. I looked at the satellite view of the new roads. They look so tame. I as driving through the Salt River Canyon one time with a friend at night. I asked if I should drive faster and he replied "SURE!". I stopped at an overlook and asked again. After his eyes adjusted and he saw the steep sides and still couldn't see the bottom it was "SLOWER, SLOWER!!!!". The last time I drove that road you were on was '85. Funny how they say Jerome is haunted now. It was never known for that before. I was laughing as you drove through Jerome. Most of those buildings are new; made to look old. I was hopping you would stop at the old museum if it was still there. They had 3d models of the old mineshafts with information about the materials mined out. The amount of copper and gold was insane. The town is built on a fault and the blasting was causing earthquakes and shifting.

Jerome is such an intriguing town. The mountain it sits on is hollow from a myriad of mine shafts. There is the constant concern that it could all collapse. People were allowed to move there for free years back just to care for the homes and commercial buildings.

I remember many years ago the entire town (couple hundred) including the sheriff were busted for pot. Now its residents are rich hippies. Alot of cool shops and cafes there. Hey Russ. Us motorhome folks would like to see those campgrounds. If they are attended, I have never had a ranger that wouldn't give us a free 10 or 15 min pass to check things out. And hey. Your drone shows stuff too. Thanks for your work and the wide area you show us. Tom

I am late for the party here. But on Mingus Mt, there is camping, fishing, hiking, and yes Bigfoot. You can check out the camp areas without paying. It’s beautiful up in there. It’s a bit off the main road though. No big Riggs allowed, you will se e why when you enter Jerome from this back side.
You missed the other part of the town as you come in from the other end. If you would have turned left at the Fire Station and drove back there plenty of parking. And another part of the town to see. Lots more then you captured. You will have to go back and spend a couple days there.

I have a difficult time being at higher elevations, so I am very aware of the elevation of places:
Jerome Arizona is roughly 5066 ft
    Prescott Arizona is 5367 ft

Love this area! Jerome has some pretty good Pie! White stuff on the north faces will last awhile! I’ve ridden this area on a Motorcycle which is real fun!
