I see a lot of these wood- and lino-carving videos and, although the content is very good, it seems most of those producing them are confused as to what the difference between sharpening and honing tools is. Using a strop rubbed with compound does not sharpen a gouge; it simply hones an already sharpened one.
To sharpen a tool it must first be rubbed on a grinding wheel, a whetstone, or a diamond plate. Sharpening means that the edge has substantial metal removed to give it a sharpened edge. This sharpening procedure naturally cause a burr to form on that newly-sharpened edge. Gently rubbing the sharpened tool on the strop afterwards removes this burr so that the new razor edge is revealed: this process is called honing. Sharpening is only required infrequently. Honing is required much more often to maintain that decent edge.
If your tool is very blunt then honing it on a strop, even for a long time, will not sharpen it. I hope this explanation helps.

Thank you for making this video. I recently started making linoprints after having made them in art school 20 years ago. I was using my old tools and really struggling with it. After watching your video, I bought the pfeil tools (set c, like you mentioned) and the sharpening kit. Hope it makes my life alot easier (at least when it comes to linoleum carving!😉). Nice video! You can buy them individually at good art stores or webshop but since they are made in swiss they are not always in stock.

Dear El, How do you mount your prints for public presentation/sale? Framed? Mat? What sort of backing board, tape or glue? Perhaps a video on this? I looked and there are none on YT except for photos

El, did you say you sharpen your Pfeil tools every 5 to 10 minutes while you’re carving??? I thought they would hold an edge much longer than that! At that rate, how long before you need another set? Not sure I can justify spending that much on Pfeil tools if that’s the story.
I run them over my leather every ten minutes or so. This doesn't wear down the metal, it hones the edge so you don't need to use a wet stone as often. If you hone them with the strop frequently, you won't need replacements. If you don't, you'll dull them out and then really need to grind them down to repair that edge.

does sharpening the 0.5mm work on the slipstrop?
It does okay on the smallest groove, so long as the block isn't too worn.
