I got into the goth scene about 20 years ago, in the mid 2000s, and if you take a look at it, and want to find music from that time, it becomes pretty hard.
I was very excited, when newer bands like Plastique noir, Lebanon Hanover or She Past Away popped up. Because it was a time of massive decline. The 90s goth was over, and it seemed for quite a while that traditional Goth would disappear entirely. You rarely could see any teased hear or pointy buckle boots everywhere, and if you dressed like that, you would be stared at by other younger "goths" for looking weird and outdated, while olders would say "oh just like in the 80s, but that is long gone".
I started to tease my hair and wear pikes at that time, as a protest against the development of the scene, which nearly nobody understood. The younger ones didn't understood it.
And I think the "You have to listen to the 80s stuff" attitude comes from exactly that time, because the goth scene of the early 2000s was nothing but a shadow of the past, and new stuff usually had nothing to do with Goth at all, but people used the word like it's gold.
This statement stood, "listen to the 80s classics" but it's not true anymore. There are so many amazing new goth bands nowadays, it is incredible. I am so often still in awe to see this happening, a living goth scene again, that I would consider a goth scene. Because for such a long time I felt like I belong into a museum and not in a club.
A few of the bands of that time, some are forgotten now, some still exist:
    Novocaine Mausoleum
    Plastique noir
    False Faces
    Violet Sky
    Undying Legacy
    She wants revenge
    Leichenliebe
    Cemetery Girlz
    Dead Roses Garden
    The Knutz
    Tragic Black
    Another Species
    Zadera
    The Eternal Fall
I remember these were the contemporary new artists of that time, some never got over the state of Demo tapes. Which shows already how rare it was back then. These bands were the present time and the future of the Gothic scene at that point.
The situation is so different today. Back then it was like "We walked barefoot to school, 20 miles in the snow, and paying 2cents for a snickers bar was unaffordable back then"
Goth RUclips didn't existed at all. Goth was a discussion on internet forums and blogs.

Some of my personal favorite modern artists are She Past Away (they're Turkish and have a sort of post punk/darkwave sound), The Horrors (particularly the album Strange House because it's so delightfully campy; I've also asked David J in person about modern bands he likes and he mentioned them), Kaelan Mikla (an icelandic all-female band who also have some punk influence), Bragolin (who aren't strictly goth really, but they've got a sort of upbeat post-punk sound and their lyrics are inspired by horror movies and post-apocalyptic themes), The Soft Moon (who sort of mix goth sounds, but their early stuff is more post-punk and I like it a lot), and Soft Kill (just very melancholy post punk). Some other bands I like that aren't exactly goth but that have themes/sounds/feels that are common in goth music and seem to be popular among goth fans are Drab Majesty, Chelsea Wolfe, Have a Nice Life, Fever Ray (the first album is so good), Light Asylum, A Place to Bury Strangers, and Lingua Ignota.

I had no idea there was so much vinyl being made these days! As for newer bands, check out Kaelen Mikla from Iceland, they just released their 4th album, which I've not listened to yet so I recommend their third - Nott Eftir Nott. They sing in Icelandic, which really adds to the coldness of the music.

If you are into 'Fields of the Nephilim,' then I highly recommend NFD. They do have a slight Metal edge to them, nonetheless, I can't seem to get enough of them.

Ash Code are not from the UK, they are from Naples Italy, never heard them tho... I'm not really into contemporary bands. I think I saw Horror Vacui opening for someone here in Italy. Cheers
