- www.joshkingmusic.com Josh King sings a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and plays the harmonica at the State of New York's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance on January 21, 2013 'Take My Hand, Precious Lord' was one of MLK's favorite hymns and often sung at Civil Rights Movement events by Mahalia Jackson.
"Take My Hand, Precious Lord" is a spiritual gospel blues song written by Thomas Dorsey. Dorsey, who was born in 1899, was a blues/jazz/gospel musician and composer known for fusing blues and spiritual songs. His dad was a Baptist preacher and his mom was the church organist. He wrote over 800 songs in his lifetime and performed with blues and spiritual artists. Dorsey suffered a tragic loss when his wife died from childbirth and his baby died two days after that. He wrote “Precious Lord” when trying to cope with this tragic loss. You can watch Thomas Dorsey himself, the father of gospel music, explain the origin of and inspiration behind the song “Precious Lord” here: • Video
To honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Josh chose to sing one of MLK's favorite songs, "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" when the State of New York asked him to perform for their annual MLK Day Celebration.

Beautiful!!! Just beautiful...
man this lad is good he definately has the blues in him
This is not a damn blues song. It's a song written by a suffering former slave, that wanted to lord to just take him after all the suffering heaped upon him. This damn boy knows nothing about it and should stick to his white songs
+cyndeewi You are wrong about everything in those three sentences. I suggest you read the video description and watch the following video in which Thomas Dorsey, the composer of this song, explains in his own words the origins of the song: ruclips.net/video/nEosw5GUCzQ/видео.html . Born in 1899, Dorsey was known as the father of gospel music and known for fusing blues with spiritual music. You should read more about Thomas Dorsey. He was a very interesting and gifted individual who worked early on in the blues and jazz clubs in Chicago playing with Ma Rainey's band and who later incorporated the rhythms he heard from that music into the old spiritual music to create gospel.
Miss,
There was a time before I became a born again Christian I would have responded to your comment very rudely. I'm not that person anymore.
If you check your history you will find out that Rev. Dorsey wrote the song is response to the loss of his wife and infant son. He was also a God fearing man and I know he would love this young man's performance.
I love children and I especially love to listen to them sing songs to our Lord. I will pray for you Cyndeewi that you find Christ soon before it's too late. He will gladly take that chip off of your shoulder. I'm sorry that this will most likely offend you. That is not my intention but I'm seeing nothing but hate in your comments. Too many people have died because of hate. Writing insensitive comments on a child's RUclips channel is just plain wrong!
Like I said I will be praying for your salvation whether you want me to or not.
well...and ain't that racist! U sayin white people can't sing black songs or what??!
Thank you Joshua for the link. There's a reason you have the name you do. God's love has no color. Keep sharing in, with and from the family of God. He used you today to open a gate that's been locked to me a long time.
Wow, man!
Thanks!
I just saw him play some blues songs with Tommy Emmanuel the other night. He was awesome
AMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy Wow, and the harp - Wow again. A gift from above ...
Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I'm tired, I'm weak, I'm lone
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home
When my way grows drear precious Lord linger near
When my light is almost gone
Hear my cry, hear my call
Hold my hand lest I fall
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home
When the darkness appears and the night draws near
And the day is past and gone
At the river I stand
Guide my feet, hold my hand
Take my
This kid is just singing a song, a gospel song. The history of the song is important because of how he was inspired to write it. Why does every one have to bring race and slavery into this????? I wasn't there in the era of slavery and neither were these people that continue to harp about. Its a horrible era of history that is no-one today is at fault for. Just listen to the song and let it touch you and praise God for the inspiring words he gave us.
Very well said, Stary. The music is there for everyone to enjoy.
the man who wrote it had lost his wife and newborn child and had given up on God.
sing it brother!!!
Oh if only Thomas Dorsey could see this sweet child singing his song. I know he would be so very happy!
Thomas Dorsey would turn over in his grave. As much as he suffered from these white people doing slavery. He knows nothing about suffering.
it's a kid!maybe it's better at 12 that he knows nothing about suffering!
@cyndeewi This song has nothing to do with slavery. He wrote the hymn after his wife died giving birth his son. His son died soon after. That's what the hymn is about! Learn your hymn history! And to be clear Thomas Dorsey loved Jesus and he would be proud to see a child regardless of race sing this hymn.

wow just wow uh
I know this dude now, really nice guy

Should have song another song. This is a true black spiritual. No one can sing it without experiencing the suffering.
Oh really cause he does
Also Joshua you might want to change your settings for comments to moderate or something like that. This will keep the peace amongst your viewers and to protect you from some of the foul language I'm seeing. I think people who do this on a minor's channel probably use it around their own children which is sad and disgusting!
I{ agree 100% with what you've written there, Regina. Unfortunately there are way too many people around who think such behaviour is so, so clever.
Kann dieser Joshua so gut singen?Das ist bezaubern

Isaiah 41:13 For I, Jehovah thy God, will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. Isaiah 49:16
Behold, I have engraved you upon the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.
does he play Call of Duty?
Is he still playing harmonica???
Yes. All the time!
Is this from Minnesota?
Thanks! Hope he likes the piano!
@Abir: don't worry--he won't. He's nothing remotely like him. Besides, he plays harmonica and knows how to play it since he was very small. He's serious about his music.
Man u even sang it better than Elvis ! and I'm an Elvis fan.
the blind men from boston too
hate the clapping in the middle of the performance....
