As you get older (I'm in my 80s) what you spend on anything becomes less important. As my wife of 61 years said to me, "if it makes you happy then buy it, life is too short"......and getting shorter. So a little bit of GAS just doesn't apply to me. Soooo......I just bought an Oylympus PEN-f, a camera I always wanted.

I think that when you're starting out GAS can be a learning tool for trying lots of different lenses and finding your style/subject preferences. After that, for me anyway, I shed a lot of the things that didn't suit me or my style and GAS over cameras and lenses didn't affect me anymore. Camera bags were a whole different thing though, I collected lots of different bags over the years, not because I had to own them all, but because I just couldn't find one that really suited me. I'm an artist first and photographer second, so my needs don't tend to match everyone else's. Last year I finally realized that I was looking at the bags the wrong way around. Instead of trying to find the perfect camera bag to also fit my art supplies, I realized that what I really needed was an art bag that could hold my camera gear. So I took the padded insert out of one of the camera bags and I put it in a regular backpack if I need to carry art and camera gear. Then I got rid of all of the other bags and it's worked brilliantly so far.

I had major GAS before I started shooting for a living, what a wake up call ! now every bit of gear has to pay for itself and be justified.
No more multiple cameras sitting on the shelf, I have 2 bodies 6 lenses and various accessories, the only time I buy new gear is when something stops working or if I need something specific I just hire.

My wallet hates my GAS but living away from home for 15 years and tough winters have moved me to find a safe space in photography. I think it has contributed a lot to my personal life and the money I have spent has been mostly worth it.

Excellent video on the subject! If you're a amateur or hobbyist, you can have some GAS fun if you shop for used gear. There is so much quality gear available for 60% or less of the new price and if you buy from certain online companies, you can get a warranty with the purchase. Over time, I've acquired a good collection of lenses and have upgraded camera bodies at roughly half the retail price. But, I've still spent more money than I really needed to, especially on accessories that proved to be fairly useless. But if you want to play, you have to pay!

How dare you expose my mental and medical condition 😆 TBH, end of last year I stopped buying gear. I discovered it was not the cameras it was me! I was disscontented with my creative out put and I found that buying gear was just a dopemine hit. I needed to work with what I have and be creative. I am only replacing equipment when they break. Not spending money allows me to spend money on getting out and also allows a bit of a buffer in times when money is tight. As for the perfect camera or camera company we all know it is Pentax, but for unity sake I won't say it! 😆 Great content and thanks for sharing. Now let me hop back on to ebay! hahahaha!

Apart from the financial hit over time with acquiring everything, the other bad thing about GAS that affects me is the choice paralysis - choosing and second guessing which gear and system to take. I’m a hobbyist only, so the only person I have to satisfy with my photos/video is myself…but as you say, it means that all these purchases are a loss, not an investment (no leicas or Fuji x100v/vi in my collection 😅). Great video as always - enjoy Japan!

I'm only just coming out of this having started with an OMD 10 IV 18 months ago and have gone through Lumix GX880, S9 to Fujifilm XF10, probably half a dozen cameras. I've now settled on Fujifilm X-S20 as my 'main', an X30 every day carry and my X-M1 which I don't use much but has that lovely X-Trans I sensor and I'll never sell. The main pain is collecting all these accessories which are hard to move on and sit in the draw. Great video.

I was complaining to a non-photogrspher friend about my having GAS and he made an interesting observation that people buy motorcycles for 15 or 20 thousand or more to ride on weekends and maybe one or two nights a week. And in cold climates they can only do that 6 months of the year. Or even more so with big motorboats for 50k or more. Having too many cameras doesn't seem to bad ( assuming no Leicas) compared to boats and motorcycles.

    Since 2022 - Om-1. E-M1 Mk II, 12-40 F2.8, 17mm F1.2, 60mm F/2.8 Macro, 40-150mm F/2.8, 300mm F4, MC-14 teleconverter. Between 2008 and 2022 I only used an Olympus E-410 and 25mm f/2.8 pancake lens to photograph everything. E-410 has had several shutter replacements but is now fully retired.
I expect to get at least ten years from the two newer cameras.

Currently using predominantly M4/3rds OM Systems and Lumix but also have Sony FF. And not forgetting the computer and server systems as well as a palette of software. Even with this policy I still have a lot of equipment 😂😂. But having a lot of fun 📷🎥❤️😊

    A few thoughts.
First thanks and great for making a video about G.A.S. in general. It's true, it's not photography and can set back one as a photographer by the distraction it gets. And the $$. Good for you act while being a brand ambassador you discuss this and mention that each brand has unique things going for.
Bigger sensor speeds - just a note the Fuji X-H2s has a sensor that reads faster than the OM-1s (it's also stacked). Do note both sensors are ultimately made by Sony. The price is whithin striking distance of an OM-1 MKII.
The other thought I wanted to mention- you can totally and absolutely indulge in GAS even if you still keep within the same brand. An excellent particular example of this is when someone "loyal to a brand" thinks that the level of metric/performance in a particular brand is completely satisfied by say their top model of the line and they don't need anything else that another brand provides better, but then later that same brand comes out with a new model that does include some of those features- and then bang, they upgrade and they think it's one of the best features ever.
Basically GAS in general doesn't require you to jump brands. It's more about buying something as an addiction, as getting that "hit" of something new- even if in the end you really don't need it for what you want to do.

Interesting video Jimmy. My GAS relates to vintage lenses & film cameras. I have about 30 lenses across 5 different mounts and 10 film cameras, 2 per mount. I enjoy collecting them though and seeing the differences between the lenses. Conversely I’ve downsized my mirrorless lenses and only have 1 for my Sony a7 iii, a Tamron 28-75 f2.8. I have plenty of vintage lenses I can adapt which hold their value pretty well!

I must admit that I have a case of G.A.S. but perhaps not too serious a one. Over the years I have accumulated several SONY APS-C cameras (NEX-5, A6000, A6300, A6700 and ZV-E10).Mostly I had specific reasons to upgrade (A6000 for a viewfinder, A6300 for weather sealing, A6700 for IBIS, ZV-E10 as a secondary video camera). I have also accumulated a variety of SONY APS-C lenses as they were released and I saw a use for them. Some of the lenses are now dated or redundant e.g. the old Sony/Zeiss 16-70 F4 vs. the new 16-55 F2.8 or the old 16mm f2.8 vs my new 15mm F1.4) but I have kept them all since they each have some feature I still find useful (lower weight, mor compact etc.) vs the superior newer lenses. Having said that, I also bought an Olympus EM5 m11 for its weather sealing and available weather sealed lenses for travel (this was before SONY started releasing weather sealed APS-C lenses) as well as a TOUGH TG6 as a hiking and casual camera. So ... I also got a smattering of lenses for the Olympus to enable it to be an alternative to the SONY-s as a travel camera or more compact carry, Not sure if that all counts as G.A.S. but , were OM system to release a PEN F mii I would snap one up, not because I "need" it but just because I like its format.

Thanks for this. Some of the smaller cameras are going up in price, and plenty of them were made in their time. I think one can make a profit if the camera was bought second hand in the first place, but it is a risk because it is hard to predict what will go up in price. for example the Panasonic GM5 is now very expensive. The Panasonic GX8 second hand started increasing in value over a year recently.

I bounce daily between wanting a smaller a7crii with some primes or a nikon zf, I feel the z6iii is too much for video. then i think maybe there will be a nikon z5ii. then i swing perhaps to upgrading my g85 and going MFT for a better sensor. today is a good day where I just and make do with what I have. there i have vented. i feel better now!

I have an alternative way to think about this conundrum: if you're not getting paid, just use the camera that you love the most. iPhone, E-M10, Phase One, Leica M6, Pentax K1000, Nikon F3, whatever. The only thing that matters is your connection to the camera.
You're documenting a life, not taking lifestyle photos for Robb Report or Bazaar, or a catalogue for BMW.
Newspaper photographers used to shoot pushed Tri-X and HP-5 with manual focus lenses. They didn't waste time with indulgent post processing tweaks, either. The results were beautiful, were they not?

I am a hobbyist and have only two camera systems: Olympus Pen (E-PL8, E-PL6 and E-PL3) and Canon EF-S (EOS 500D and EOS 1000D). Those Canons I bought from used market and they were very cheap. Same batteries can be used for both of them. Then I also have bought 40 or so lenses. Most of them are old cheap lenses from 20th century which I use with adapters. (M42, Exakta, LTM-M39, Olympus OM, T2). I guess I won't buy more gear any time soon. I'll try to improve myself as a photographer with these. Perhaps I'll someday sell some of my cameras and lenses. Time will show.
I have used approximately 6000 euros in 15 years for camera gear, that's 400€ per year. If I hadn't done that, I would have used that money for something else unnecessary. 😄Luckily I'm not after the latest and greatest.

I have tried to limit G.A.S. by thinking about what I can carry around when I am traveling. For a long time, I did not buy anything more than what could fit in the Nanuk 910 case when I was traveling, however, in later years after buying an apartment, I had to buy a separate cabinet in my living room just to fit the gear. But all of my main gear still fits in the Nanuk case: OM-1 with 12-40/2.8, Pan-Leica 9mm/1.7, Pan-Leica 25/1.4, Olympus 60/2.8, Olympus 75/1.7, Olympus 14-150/4-5.6, Pan-Leica 100-400/4-6.3, FL-LM3 Mini Flash and some filters. The question I always ask myself before buying anything new are: Can I fit it in the case? What about the lens I need to take out of the case to fit the new one? I have been considering buying a use 12-100/4 or a 40-150/4 pro to replace the 14-150 but I am not sure if that is the right use of my money and my self-imposed camera case size restrictions.

  • @masanthar

Well I try to tame GAS by (mostly) limiting myself to one system, so I am now in a place with a few reliable digital cameras and a nice collection of film cameras with about 80% lens cross-compatibility, a few flashguns and the necessary parafernalia, tripods softboxes etc. Now for the mostly part, can't beat a small lumix m34 body for every day carry and I just had to get a 6×7 MF camera (lumix makes a great lightmeter for it).
Downside, space and safe storage becomes a problem but worse is the limited amount of time to use and enjoy the equipment. Still haven't got around to reading Life magazine photography guide/encyclopedia from the 80's.
    Anyway, life is short...

GAS is only GAS if you don't use the gear you buy.
If you have a use case for the gear you buy and you use it then it is not a case of buying gear for the sake of it.
GAS is buying gear that you are not going to use or use to its full capability.

My OM-1 does nearly everything I need it to do from Landscape, street, wildlife, and extreme macro. But where I reach for my Nikon Z8 is for bird photography. I have 840mm equivalent reach on my OM-1 system and 840mm reach on Nikon full frame. The 45MP sensor on the full frame gives me much more crop reach than 840mm on a 20MP sensor. For bees and butterflies the OM-1 wins hands down with a 1.4m close focus at 840mm.
Also for woodland photography where there is a lot of detail the full frame is a clear winner when it comes to image quality.
However, I am off to Cambodia next week and I will be taking my OM-1, 60mm f2.8 macro, 12-40mm f2.8, 40-150 f4, 300mm f4, 50mm f1.4, 9mm F1 7,1.4 TC and. Godox V1 for macro focus bracketing. All that gear comes in at less than 4kg. Oh, and a Ricoh GR3x. That has me covered from street, temples, Landscape, macro, wildlife and bird photography.
My full frame falls way short on macro capability, even though I will be leaving the 90mm macro at home, and is too bulky and heavy for travel.
I started my photo journey on micro 4/3 and love the format. I think it is very under rated. If you can't get excellent shots with MFT it is you not the system.

A month ago I bought a OM motor drive 1 including an OM-2 MD, and a 14-42 EZ. In November -24 I bought a new 100-400 with 400 € OMDS discount. Last Summer I bought a 12 mm f2. It goes on and on last two years. Olympus TLR, Olympus PEN-EE, red Olympus Pen E-PM2, a 8-25 zoom, 45mm f1.8, OM-1mk1 I'm sick Jimmy.
I could be happy with only the E-M1mk3 and the 12-100 SyncIS f4 i started up with. Or my old but strong E-1 with three lenses. That one gave me beautiful photos. Or the Stylus 1s I bought in 2012 and still use.

What I like about this video, that you dont talk about yout GAS and tell us, that you are cured, because that is one direction, where most GAS videos are all about (and in many cases, hard to believe, because they stopped GAS by buying the latest and greatest).
I can fully agree with you. Dont buy 1.2 lenses and dont buy heavy lenses unless you need them really. Think twice - how often and in which situation do you nees this lens. Do it fit in your bag, which you like to carry? Would you carry it around, even if you are not sure if you need it?
And maybe dont buy into systems like Sony, which are heavy supported, because there are so many new cameras and a lot of lenses - cheap or expensive and the used market is so big, you would find lenses and cameras everywhere. :-)

G.A.S is good, and I reckon everyone should buy as much or more than they need like myself.

Gassy people like us are more tech nerds than photographers, that's what I think. Which "real" photographer would sit in front of a computer reading camera rumour sites and youtube videos!? 🙂Not me at least

A Leica investment is the limited edition gold plated Brunei Sultanate edition
Someone sells it near me for a price of a nice car.
Hanging car from neck I guess, that's a real investment

As a hobbyist makes no sense to buy lenses new, you buy second and don't lose much on resell. I buy new when i don't find second. I only regret selling my 24-105 at half the price, bought new for an expedition, i didn't used it in 4 years but i might need it now

I’ve sold all my camera equipment/ lenses etc, and have strictly gone with my iPhone 16 pro It’s always with me, fast, stabilized and I bought a Beastcage and Beastgrip lens for those days I want more “professional” shots. I think it’s more than enough for most hobbyists. Professional shooters and daily RUclipsrs obviously would benefit from higher end DSLRs. The 48 megapixel sensor from the iPhone looks great, and the autofocus always works for video shooters as well. To each their own.

Three of them are on the 'sell on' list - honest! 😅

Also, can you help me understand what do you do as an OMS ambassador? It is tiresome constantly hearing about all the things you CANNOT do, not to mention the ever growing list of EX-ambassadors, including my local ambassador, Peter F, Robin W.... No matter how good the products are it is off putting to hear disgruntled ambassadors. Thanks!!

I have bought a few cameras in the last three years. I decided that at 18 SLR cameras, I can stop. I try to shoot a roll through them in a "cycle".... one camera loaded at a time. I will not shoot enough to use them all this year. I did not buy them all, several were gifted to me. I do not think I will actively look for more cameras, but if one comes along, well....😏

I didn't think it was gas... I wanted better autofocus and image quality than my EM5.3 was giving so I tried the OM1.2 and was disappointed and sent it back. That cost me a pretty high restocking fee. Ouch! The EM5.3... its not perfect but pretty good and quite fun. Good points in this video... think about what you need and how the difference in the new gear will benefit you. I underestimated the gear I already have.

Who thought of this acronym? I hope you have to watch each and every stupid video where this word is used. It’s really annoying how every photography channel now has to do something about gas and always makes the same stupid joke „hohoho no, not that gas, hihihi“. Think of something else please

I currently enjoy two camera systems Olympus micro 4/3 and Nikon Z full frame. But I am wanting to introduce an aps-c system. Possibly Sony or Fuji. I haven't made up my mind but it would be for my hobby camera.
