It’s wonderful to teach our children early, how to be healthy and lead by example! It’s unfortunate that more people will judge a parent for withholding unhealthy “treats” from their kids, but won’t bat an eye when some parents allow their children to eat McDonald’s and twinkies everyday 😆
Speaking of choking hasards, I wish there were more warnings about grapes out there, they are so dangerous especially for kids ages 6 and under. The child of an acquaintance just died from it. And there are many similar stories unfortunately. Always cut the grapes in halves or quarters the first few years - when kids are distracted while eating or swallow the wrong way, an accident can happen so quickly. (Just writing this because if some people on here didn't know, this could be extremely important info.)
It’s a good idea to Water down juices. I only give my toddler reduced-sugar apple juice and then I cut it by half with water. She still Enjoys it. I also cut down my own juice with water.
My pediatrician actually told us to AVOID giving our 2 year old juice. She said however if he’s sick, we can give him DILUTED juice. I’m so happy that we’ve stuck to water because my son now loves drinking water. He also eats tons of fruit which I don’t think would be the case if he drank juice all the time.
I did exactly the same. Even went as far as zero white sugar until my child was three. The only sugar he got was from fruits. I went as far as reading every label and made my own bread etc. he’s 6 now and eats and loves all sugary stuff but we only allow him to eat those during the weekends. He’s super healthy and our dentist always comments on how healthy his teeth look like. Kids don’t need those stuff when they’re so young. Although I have to say it was hard work it was worth it
My kids (2&5) get an honest juice box for all our park trips and beach times during the summer. We love knowing they’re staying hydrated and enjoying a “treat” while we play and spend hours outdoors.
Tried that with my first. She just wasn't getting enough fluids. Mixed 2oz of juice with 8oz of water. Used to feel guilty, but now 3 kids in, I give them a water bottle in the morning, filling it up when needed, but if they also want juice or milk, not a problem. Just don't overdo it
There’s nothing I don’t feed my kids lmao I’m a bad mom I guess 😂 I just limit the junk, but let them have it sometimes! I’m trying to create a healthy relationship with all foods 🤷🏻♀️
You’re not a bad mom. That’s your house your rules. Don’t compare your own kids to the next and because you don’t do it like the next woman it makes you a bad mom.
Agree with everything you said. Makes complete sense. As an adult I don’t drink juice it’s literally sugar like you said and only have dark chocolate if I have a sugar craving.
So right about the popcorn! Went to the movies when I was 5, I was eating popcorn & next thing I know I couldn’t breathe due to the kernel getting stuck in my throat & had emergency surgery. It took me almost 17 years to eat popcorn again
My son is 8 years old and he has ADHD AND he enjoys moving around when he is eating . I DO give him grapes but i still cut them up. I also still cut up his hotdogs...and HONESTLY i cringe when he has hard candy in his mouth due to his constant movement. (Helicopter mama over here)! Sorry, not sorry! 🥴🥰☺️
Same, not much a juice or even soda person myself anyway. Like you mentioned, so much sugar! It almost makes me feel sick after drinking a beverage like that. My son loves his water. We on rare occasion have given him chocolate, I don’t even remember how many times, it’s been that small and forgettable. I know he’ll be able to enjoy more sweet things when he’s older but for now, no need for so much of it. They already intake a lot of sugar from the natural sugars we give him for breakfast and snacks anyway, they’re totally satisfied with that!
That doesn’t look like the juice we drink here in Ecuador, we liquify the fruit with a bit of water and that’s what we call juice. Crazy the difference 😮
A veces, me acuerdo a mi abuelita y otras familias poner harta azúcar en los juguitos (tamarindo, limón, maracuyá, etc) así que de iguales forma tener cuidado o bajarle el azúcar
I’m on the same page as you!! My LO is 1 1/2 years old and we also don’t feed her any of these 3 foods. We let her enjoy her fruit as it is. Her organic puffs are her form of popcorn anyways. For the sake of our LO’s health and safety. We don’t intend to give these 3 foods until ours is 4 or 5 years old.
Peanuts/peanut butter, I'd be giving eggs and gluten by 2 years but definitely not before 1. Pretty much all my family can't have dairy so any of the babies in the family, that arent breast feed had to have non dairy formula I think at 2 the doctors had us slowly introduce dairy. Allergies run in my family so we introduce common allergens slowly.
I was recommended by my son's pediatrician to introduce allergens early but to monitor him when introduced. We've tried eggs, dairy and peanut butter. He's almost 9 months. Other moms who didn't introduce them earlier, they're kids are allergic to everything.
How do you navigate diet when it comes to grandparents? My in laws don't understand that food does not equal love and are so ready to feed my baby everything 😣
But what kind of juice? Freshly squeezed or from the supermarket? Cuz if you do it at home and you add more veggies ( like carrot , cucumbers, celery etc) than fruits , I think it’s ok! And depends what kind of fruits also. Some have more sugar some less.
I was out with my hubby and 1 year old for lunch and these grandparents were out with there under 2 granddaughter. Anyways, my daughter was looking at her as you know kids love kids and later on I was watching them give this little girl multiple sips of coke… when they would take it off her she would then proceed to sook and want more. My hubby and I were absolutely mortified. I’ve gotten guilt from watering down juice from time to time but coke!!!! Absolutely outrageous.
No juice in our house either. My 4 yo can have one small serving as a treat on occasion. She gets homemade popsicles as a treat after dinner most evenings and that is a lot of fun. We don’t limit sugar but we also don’t offer it. If she asks for it we let her have it but I find that she actually eats very little and loses interest quickly. She comments that a lot of foods are “too sweet” for her liking, like bananas, grapes, candy, and a lot of condiments like ketchup and bbq sauce. She also doesn’t like bread, fried food or processed meat. A couple of years ago when I worked full time outside the home I remember lamenting that I couldn’t get my toddler to eat a dang chicken nugget. It sure would be convenient. We have our food struggles and like me she has texture issues, but overindulgence in sugar is not currently a struggle. I am very thankful for that. As a child I was an absolute carb and sugar addict and that has caused lots of issues in my adulthood. I don’t want that for her and she seems to be learning some healthy habits at an early age.
I do give them chocolate 🍫 usually dark chocolate and around half a serving of it I do not give them popcorn for the same reason And I do give juice but like her I give them water and a slash of juice I learned from myself that when kids are deprived from some stuff, they usually go and have it all instead of just a little bit so it’s better just to give them a taste of it that way when they’re older, they don’t wanna have the whole thing
We're the same with our toddler. She drinks water. If she's at grandmas or a friends house and they offer juice, of course she can have it, same with chocolate or any other sweets. Otherwise, we don't even have it in our house. She loves her fresh fruit and other real foods we eat.
I completely agree with juice we do mio are kids get board of plain water there is no sugar in it and it helps them to keep hydrated when they dont want to drink water
Working in a restaurant, I was absolutely SHOCKED at the amount of parents ordering their CHILDREN coke products (at all!) at dinner…. Then being annoyed as they start running around the restaurant. Like yeah…. What did you expect? Good luck with bedtime!
My daughter is 18 years old now. I gave her hearty snacks only, like black olives, feta cheese, cooked carrots. No apples. Now I let her eat whatever she likes, but she alwas takes salty snacks.
Ooh, processed juice from a bottle. I was like "no like fresh juice?" Hand squeezed orange juice just tastes better. If you make home made apple juice, you know.
I also have to floss like a maniac after I eat popcorn so I can’t imagine a child getting a kernel in their teeth and risk infection! That would suck I’ve also gotten them stuck in my tonsils before!
These are all very valid points. I’m an adult and I’ve gotten those little bits of popcorn lodged places and the last thing a 2 year old needs is high sugar snacks
I don’t give our 15 month old “kid” or “baby” products for food. Some examples are kid marketed frozen waffles, cereal, or yogurt. These products always just seem excessively heavy in sugar. I will buy plain yogurt and add a little honey or fruit myself. And I make my own muffins or pancakes for him. But the kid marketed snacks are just processed foods with tons of sugar I can’t get behind.
I hold off on all sweets before a year. I don't offer juice ( diluted ) until their second summer - to prevent dehydration. I'll only give my kids herbal tea - I'm very against giving caffeine for kids. No soda, especially coke! Some schools give the elementary kids coke as a special treat - was horrified when i found out. If they're going to give soda, then why not 7up, sprite?! I'm dreading having to be that mother...
How about diluting the juice just for a little flavor. We did that when she was about 2 and to this day full juice isn’t even a thing.. like a 1/3 cup to a full 8 ounce of water and she is an adult. I don’t even drink juice at full juice it’s to sugary. However juice is a rare thing for us. We get our fruit from the natural sources.
Your baby is already 2 you were literally pregnant the other day.... I did not know about popcorn this is one of my 3 year old favorite snacks. Never too old to learn.

I agree with all, except smoothies are also liquid sugar since the fruits are blended, nutritionists and pediatricians recommend one fruit or a handful of forest fruits per day, eaten as such in the first part of the day after or between meals, never on an empty stomach (fructose will absorb much slower this way, plus the fibers will not be destroyed by the blending).
@@TheSunnyD01 Just read more studies about it, blending does change the fiber content and as someone else mentioned above it is concentrated fructose, which changes even the number of calories, will absorb a lot faster and cause blood sugar imbalance.
