Agreed, although the situations Ganz portrayed had a limited range (i.e. "Bunker Hitler") while Meisner and Berkoff had to cover a lot more ground. That said, I would have loved to see Ganz instead of Berkoff throughout War and Remembrance.

Berkoff got mixed reviews in his portrayal of Hitler in WAR AND REMEMBRANCE: some people thought he was excellent, others say he was too over the top. Both Guenther Meisner and Bruno Ganz are dead.@@nerva-

43:10-43:25 A lot of people don't know this, but it was Stalin not Hitler who violated the Nazi-Soviet Pact first when he grabbed the Romanian territory of Northern Bukovina in the summer or fall of 1940. That was never agreed to in the Nazi-Soviet Pact; there was no secret protocol of that pact for Soviet Russia to annex territory that never belonged to her in the first place. Bukovina never even belonged to the czarist Russian Empire. Stalin was busily reclaiming territory Russia had lost after World War I; eastern Poland; bits and pieces of Finland (it's a wonder he didn't annex the whole of Finland and make it part of Russia as Czar Alexander I did in 1809); the Baltic States; and the Romanian province of Bessarabia; but not Bukovina. This however, does not justify Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union and the cruel treatment that was meted upon upon it's people by his bloody hands.

I think Günter Meisner, although a bit stiff at times, was a much better and sinister Hitler than his successor to the role, Steven Berkoff, in War and Remembrance. The latter was playing it as a mere caricature, a yelling buffoon.

    • @bradanklauer8926

In War and Remembrance, Hitler was cartoonish, but I could understand what he was saying better, not just the subtitles, but also Berkhoff spoke a bit slower and more clearly. Neither however can match Bruno Ganz's portrayal of Hitler. Though I think Keitel, Halder, and Goering were done better in War and Remembrance partly due to the fact I made the bad mistake of watching War and Remembrance first!😡

Had Germany and Italy focused on Afrika, Egypt, the Suez Canal, and the Middle East, then the number 1 strategic resource (oil) could've been attained whilst denying it to the Allies at the same time. A token force on the East Front would've been needed to stave off any Soviet temptations for pre-emptive attack. Meisner was too young by five years for the role of Hitler and his face way too taut. A lot of Hitler's visitors came away shocked at the rather plain and droll expressionless countenance of the man, esp. if his mustache was overlooked. Not a very impressionable man, except when he gave speeches or went on a tirade. He was far too impressionable then.
