    Hey mate, if you really love Montreal/Canada, I'd advise you to think about planning ahead so that you can maybe apply for the Express Entry scheme later down the track. Get really familiar with the requirements, if you need 12 months experience continuous, then do that at the next country you move to. I recently got PR for Canada through the express entry scheme (I'm also Australian). It was a bit of a hassle, but definitely worth it. I assume it will be much easier to find work with PR as well.

    Totally normal. Getting a work visa is not simple in any developed country including Australia. Unless you are skilled. be an expert in something. Then you will have your pick. Canada does impose an age limit and notorious in taking very long in decisions when you apply as individual. Mate, I tried as well. Losing Visa status is so devastating. Been there myself.

    Hi Lashan, appreciate the videos that you have posted online, partially the moving to Canada video with IEC, very helpful, so i feel like i should give something back, not sure if it will prove useful or not, i am currently living in England and moving to Canada with the IEC program end of May, Excited/nervous but nothing ventured nothing gained, i am just about to leave my job in England working as a industrial Electrician that i have worked for the past 9 years, the Company is called KIER, and has many different job roles, i live currently in the south west in Devon, i worked for the Electrical and Mechanical side of the business for the water industry, the company in a national company in England so Im sure you could find work in London, from my understanding you are a Civil Engineer, and i would be surprised if there would not be a position on KIERs website for someone like your self, and being such a massive company they would probably offer training if you required it, so it might be worth checking it out! good luck.

    At least if you move to Germany, you can learn from your Montreal experience. Like the whole learning another language/ wasting time with your Holiday Visa like you mentioned. You're a smart person and picked up Quebecois farely well, so German should be a breeze.
    However England you won't have to worry about learning a new language so you can just get started ASAP on your job search and all the steps which saves you time !
    Thats to bad you couldn't stay in Canada! Least you can say you tried & still got to live here !

    Hey Lashan
    I know how you feel and I am deeply sorry you had to experience that. However, life is an uphill battle which doesn't mean you should give up. If you really something so bad...you should hard or harder than hard in making it happen. Despite all that you are currently going through...trust me you will breakthrough. I myself is currently going that mine but little by little I know a change will present itself. Now, as for the two cities, you have made mention namely London and Berlin. I would say go to Berlin. Besides that....still, try and I mean to try for Canada since that is where your heart lies. Yes, the Express Entry is freaking hard but worth it in the long run. Just look at the bigger picture with you in it. Whilst there in Berlin, keep on applying for your PR card via Express entry...man makes it happen. You are young, smart and seems focussed despite all that you are going through so keeping striving. I am currently living in Canada myself, Toronto to be exact and looking to move to Montreal or Calgary. I love both cities but I have only been to one for twelve hours and that is Montreal. I love it there but my french of which is level one is not all that but I am willing to learn even more. Well, keep on trying and I am waiting patiently for your next video. Your videos are inspiring because not everyone picks themselves up and moves just like that going after what they truly want.

    Hi Lash
    The experience that you faced in Montreal is exactly what I am facing in Australia for PR and Job. You would not realize but it is so discriminating for international students trying their way up to find a job and be at least be given an equal look to prove ourselves, just because we do not have a PR status. And getting a PR is another messed-up drama, asking people to move to regional area and study for 2 years, again spending thousands of $ without any guarantee of achieving PR. This sucks and luckily, I applied for Express Entry Canada and got that within 2 months. I spend 4 years in Australia, even got a job in a small startup just because of sharing a similar background from my boss, but still immigration policies of Australia Suck!!. I am heading towards Ontario and really want to live in a country that accepts me and considers my talent and skills, more importantly, human, instead of just treating me as an international student cash cow and throw us unattended after milking.

    I am a little bit confused here as this official webpage clearly states that your SIN number is still valid after the expiry date if you have an implied status: www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/programs/ei/ei-list/ei-employers-sin.html Could you please explain more specifically why you couldn't work for the company? Many thanks.

    • @LashanR
      @LashanR  4 года назад +1

      That's only _technically_ true. It's not so straightforward in practice. Implied status is not an officially processed, recognised thing - it's "implied". There's zero proof of you being on this implied status (nothing in the system, I checked) until it's over and you have to leave (or stay if approved). So to a new employer the SIN number is still expired and invalid. To get an extension to your SIN with zero actual proof apart from a tracking number is extremely sketch at best and would have resulted in some long processing times regardless. If I had started the job before the official end of my visa it would have been fine, but because the start date was into my implied status they couldn't pay me.

    Hi Lashan,
    I can definitely sympathise with you because I'm in a pretty much exact opposite situation than yours!
    I'm from Montreal Canada (originally Persian), and I came to Sydney Australia in 2011 to study and start a new life. After getting 2 university degrees and years of work experience, I began the immigration process that would've gotten me a PR in 2015. In 2016 however, the then Aussie government changed the immigration laws and my job/skills were not in any PR list anymore...
    That meant I wasted years of my life and thousands of dollars just to find out that I can't stay in Australia...That is unless I get married to an Australian or get a permanent job in a major/skill that is on the PR list!
    At the moment, I'm in my final year of PhD studies at uni, and I also teach at the University of Sydney every semester. To me, it's kind of weird that even though I have years of Australian working experience, and have 3 uni degrees (soon to be 4) and am as of now a scholar at the top university in Sydney...I still cannot stay here!
    So, all in all, I'm going back to Montreal either at the end of this year or early next year. What I can't understand however is, how can someone NOT want to live in Sydney?! To me, this is the best place I've ever lived in! I never understand all my Aussie friends who move to London in droves!! They willingly exchange Sydney for a place with bad weather, horrible food and super expensive rates!!

    • @eduard1215
      @eduard1215 5 лет назад +1

      marry him, so you both can HAVE what you want haha kidding :') I used to live in Montreal, and now I live in Sydney. Montreal was fun, but l didn't find the appeal to go on such hassle like he did to try to stay there forever. The weather is so bad, the wages are mediocre, the healthcare sucks and the French laws are over the top and backwards. Sydney has all the opposite to that, amazing weather, great healthcare, beautiful beaches and good job opportunities.. the problem is that it has become very dull and the nightlife kinda sucks (Newtown and Enmore are great and better than ever), however, Sydney feels insular comparing to other cities. I enjoyed much more Paris than Montreal, I could live there or Honolulu, it was amazing. I enjoyed Los Angeles (Santa Monica, WeHo). Anyway, it seems like people always want what they can't have.....

      Im born and raised in sydney. I prefer london due to its cultural diversity, and just a better city and way more things to do. I also prefer cooler weather. It is expensive tho. Sydney is a nice place to raise a family but its a pretty lackluster place after a while.

    I don't think activating your work permit later on when you arrived would have worked. As I don't think you would be able to apply/get a job as a tourist?
    Can anyone answer this please? As I've been accepted and have until May 2020 to move to Canada.

    • @LashanR

      It works because no one ever asks to actually see your work permit during job applications, and applying for jobs isn't work. I have a friend who got a job offer at Deloitte in Montreal, and once he got that job offer he did a "flagpole" and went to the border to activate his visa before starting work. You can't get an SIN number or a bank account as a tourist though.

Maybe Paris would be the better option, I did not seem to get that vibe at all from the French, if anything they were very interested in speaking English with me.

    • @666mathew
      @666mathew 4 года назад +1

      It's similar to how Americans have a distate for Hispanics in CA who never learned to speak english. You'll definately get by much easier speaking in english in Montréal than in Paris. Even the French find Québécois are a lot friendlier, esp compared to Parisians. Also, Montréal is way more affordable than Paris or CA. If you learn to speak French, you'll adapt well.

    Came to your channel when I was searching about what it's like to live in a Montreal winter, then got to know your story from the excitement of first landing to the frustration at the end :/ I did something similarly risky lately - last year I applied for express entry to Canada without having been here. Finally 2 days ago I arrived in Toronto as a new PR, but have been somehow feeling at a loss... I thought Toronto was gonna be the place to be for me, but so far I'm not liking it very much :/ I'll visit Montreal in 3 days and see how I feel over there. Being also a bit of a cultural nomad myself (from China, lived in Norway and UK), I kinda feel like I need a special connection and a strong desire to live in a place in order to flourish. Right now I'm not sure I'm feeling that with Toronto... Best of luck with you in London btw! The UK has a lot to offer! Check out Manchester and Glasgow as you're there.

    You didn't fail. Quebec controls its own immigration policy and it's designed to fail non-French first language speakers. Quebec has historically and in policy made it impossible for non-French, non-Francophone migrants to establish PR there. If you'd tried British Columbia, Alberta or Ontario, you'd probably have a job, PR status and planning to move to Montréal in the near future.

    Sadly that's Canada Lashan, it's not even just a Montreal thing, It's a Canadian culture thing. Canada is not as welcoming as they try to sell it. They are racist and bias just like the United States, the only difference with racism in Canada is that it is subtle, they don't outright call you names but they are very discriminative when it comes to landing a job and from my personal experience, Montreal is the most racist city in Canada, if you can't speak French fluently and live in Montreal, it will be very difficult for you to get a job there. I've had my own experiences as a newcomer at the time in Ontario, it literally took me 5years to get a job back in the tech industry that I've worked ever since I left University, my resume was perfect, it was revamped many times at these newcomer place where they help you with you resume, and I had a few versions of my resume depending on the job. That's the BS they give you that something might be wrong with your resume and when they fix your resume, doesn't make a difference. My resume was perfect for the jobs I applied for and I had all the experience needed, I was given an interview for almost all the jobs I've applied for and I think maybe because of my Name: Marcel Anderson. My first name is a french name and my last name is a Scottish name, and when I show up for the interview I'm a black man and I think they were all surprised that a black man has two white names.
    So over time I had to be creative with my skills and started freelancing on site a few sites like Upwork and dribbble.com just to make an income but for real those early years in Canada was not pretty man, eventually, I ride it out, stayed and became a Canadian Citizen and I moved away to a warmer country and I just come there to visit family and friends in the summertime. Canada is very boring, I've had enough of the cold and the BS from employers so I just did my thing, packed my bags, shipped my 2009 Saab 9-3 and Furniture and moved to a warmer place. Now I own and operate two tech startups in the country I am in today, something that was very difficult to achieve in Canada I guess because I wasn't Canadian enough.

    Hi mate, I am an Aussie who's got PR in Ontario...after a short while and after statistical research, I can honestly say that Australia does offer a better life and more purchasing power. So, my question is: what in hell are you talking about?! Why are you so desperate not to live in Australia? Have you done something wrong there that prevents you from going back? Or was your life so miserable in Australia for x y reasons of your own that you would do anything (I literally mean ANY thing) to live somewhere else?...Please respond and be honest to yourself. Perhaps, it is not you who doesn't want Australia: it is rather Australia that does NOT want you. Thanks.

      Even if Australia didn't want me I wouldn't care. You might like Australia but everyone doesn't need the same opinion. I like having freedom, and not being perpetually stuck in a place so isolated from the rest of the world, unaffordable, so boring and stagnant with a culture of "tall poppy syndrome" that everyone seems to be okay with.

    • @sebastianfoucaud268
      @sebastianfoucaud268 5 лет назад +1

      It sounds like you are describing Canada with those words: isolated, boring and stagnant. As for "Tall poppy syndrome", it is exactly what defines Canadians (especially English speaking) but also Australians (I agree). You are in the wrong place, mate.

    • @LashanR
      @LashanR  5 лет назад +3

      I think you're extrapolating your experience where you were in Ontario to the entirety of Canada, mate. There are many other Australians who have made the move to Canada or elsewhere and are happy with it, you might think Australia offers a better life for you and that's fine but not everyone equates a better life to "more purchasing power".

They especially have trouble keeping out Africans and Arabs migrating to Europe. There's no such thing as paradise. Every city has its problems. What matters is your socio-economic status. If you like traveling so much better work in the Airline industry or the cargo/shipping industry, or just go back to Australia and join the navy and sail all over Asia. You will always be competing with lots of people.
