words cannot express my growing joy that one day you shall have covered the king and queens of England and the presidents of America and put them all together like this
But Americans could care less about Royalty and Aristocracy. When you state "and" does that mean you would be interested in a combined timeline of sorts delving into both? Athelstan covered 895-936 while Washington led 1789-1797. This leads to 894 years of only England's Royalty. Would that not be a one sided documentary?
One of the things that struck me when i visited the Tower of London a couple of years ago was seeing the suits of Henry VIII's armor. He was not a big fat guy as portraits depict him, not as a younger man when that armor was made for him. Id guess he was a little smaller than me (im 6'0" , but heavier than he was then, but he ended up much heavier). Its funny how a specific physical object tied to a historical figure can make them so !uch more REAL to you than just names and portraits in a book can do. THAT suit of armor, 3 feet away from in in that glass case, was worn by this guy who Ive read and heard about all my life. There are dents on it from tournaments he competed in. Its workmanship is superb, looks like something a modern smith would make today with modern tools and materials. Really an amazing experience to see. As an American from California, the oldest buildings in my home town date to around the Civil War, like, 1860ish. In the UK, I visited neighborhood pubs that were a century or two older than that. It blows my mind...and British people just take it for granted.
By "take it for granted," I mean theyre surrounded by such deeply old and historical sites and artifacts, not that they don't appreciate them, of course.
Same. Although this period of English history is fascinating to me. This is a good one. I've listened about all the other kings but it has been in piece work and have had to put together the chronological order.

As I listen as Im relaxing at night, Maybe I nodded off & missed some of them. Thank you 4 the research u did do & the time involved!
Well done! The only thing I have to point out that needs to be corrected was the use of "ancestor" instead of "descendant" for the relationship to Charlemagne.
Nice vid. The time period between Alfred the Great and Edward the Confessor, the preamble to the Norman Conquest, is so fascinating to me. Thanks for showing
Thank you! I love to study the Anglo-saxons too, fascinating, captivating, and I feel something whimsical about them too. And it annoys me so when people start English History with William the Conqueror! A whole much interesting period of history wiped out
A great documentary is " The Kings and Queens of England". It's available on YT. They go through the reigns of every ruler in chronological order. It's a great way to learn all the names.
An even better way to learn the monarchs' names is with the Kings and Queens song from Horrible Histories. It's made for kids but it makes it really fun and a lot easier than just reading a list! I owe everything to horrible histories lmao
Have any of you ever watch this Chanel Drachinifel its about ships in the line and the history of the Navy of england and all the wars. You will literally learn the whole history of the worlds navy if you have a month or two to watch all his videos lol. I started watching it when I couldn't find anything that I haven't already watched on here
Great documentary! I do wonder why the likes of Edward VI and Richard I made the list as their impact on England perhaps would have been much less than the likes of Elizabeth I, Victoria, Edward I, Edward III and Henry V.
There were legendary men all over the place back then. Interacting with one another in intresting ways. What a time to be alive. Did alfred speak English? It was unrecognizable in writing
Alfred spoke Anglo-Saxon. The language we call English would develop roughly 300 years later after the invasion of the Normans. For a cool example of the Anglo-Saxon language check out “pumped up kicks Anglo-Saxon”
@@alwaysflushinpublic you do realize that there were people here, yes? There were definitely legendary indigenous Americans, just because their culture was later destroyed and lost doesn’t mean they weren’t also great rulers. Europeans just have better records.
Alfred was really the mini Charlemagne of England, in fact his much smaller kingdom repelled a full in Viking assault, even Charlemagne himself recognized the Norse threat and thought it was the most dangerous of threats to his future kingdom. He established the economy, possibly navy but definitely established the military, re arranged all of England, went from last Anglo Saxon stronghold desperately attempting to survive to most powerful kingdom in the British isles. All in his reign. His kingdom was close to destruction, and a few key years is all he needed to establish every aspect of Wessex economy military and gov, forming England into how it is recognized in medieval times. Defeated and haulted the Danes and even saw a turning of the tables in terms of who has the powerful position. Alfred though ruler of a smaller more fractured region of Europe, was a great king, England was eventually overcome by not only Scandinavians but then the Norman’s, and the institutions, as well as gov and economic set up seem to be recognizable as Alfred’s creation. Pretty crazy stuff
Can there be one with all the monarchs ? Kings and queens? I understand it would be long but I'd love to see a full comprehensive doc on ALL monarchs for england then when it became the united kingdom
King Alfred was undoubtledly great, and worthy of his regal title. Not that he ever got to rule over a particularly large area, but because of his scholarly pursuits. He was not only a scholar, but also an inventor. He invented the horn lamp. I imagine most of his reading and studying would have happened at night, seeing as his days were probably filled with administrative duties and military expeditions. However, buildings back then had a lot of draught in them, which tended to blow out the candles. Therefore, the king invented a sort of safety lamp whose sides were made of finely scraped sheets of cowhorn. Not only did this keep out the draught, the thin, semi-transparent plates of horn also mulitiplied the light you got from a candle.
Very enjoyable Program. Richard the Lionheart became famous in the US thanks to Hollywood movies about him, ans well as countless series of programs about Robin Hood. The Hollywood version is NOT accurate, but it was an interesting story with a happy ending. 'Richard's life was not all that happy.
Small note, around 7:20, he calls Charles the Great an ancestor of Charles Martel, where the former was in fact the grandson of the latter, so a descendant, not an ancestor.
You omitted the fact that Assar, the Welsh monk, taught Alfred and his court to read and gave them civilized learning and knowledge of the world outside the British isles. Many of the native Briton's Holy men had seats of learning and Alfred befriended Assar and pursuaded him to teach him and those close to him. ,
England in the house. England is where all music comes from. Without the great English composers, you wouldn't have music today. The British navy are Legends.

Great long series about English history in detail.
Well done! The only thing I have to point out that needs to be corrected was the use of "ancestor" instead of "descendant" for the relationship to Charlemagne.
Looking forward to this ...Xmas day night after a large dinner ...superb
OMG this channel - what great work produced!!! ❤️🎯👏🎉
"OMG this channel".... What?
I love this cause its like history channels like it use to be brings back so many memories. ❤❤❤❤
Oh my life! 7 hours?! THANK YOU!
One stop! Very nice from the outset! Cheers!
My new favourite channel!
A whole much interesting period of history wiped out
What a great series
Love this documentary. Thank you so much
My goal is to memorize monarchs from William the Conquerer to Elizabeth II.
This is wonderful.
My goal is to fall asleep while listening to this documentary but I am finding it difficult. Even for an American who could care less about Royalty.
@@alwaysflushinpublic but you obviously live history or you wouldn’t be here.
@@lizroberts1569 Excellent point. I long to be as observant as you. THX
Tack!
Thank you!
Have any of you ever watch this Chanel Drachinifel its about ships in the line and the history of the Navy of england and all the wars. You will literally learn the whole history of the worlds navy if you have a month or two to watch all his videos lol. I started watching it when I couldn't find anything that I haven't already watched on here
💐 Many, many thanks for this!!! 💕💕💕
Fantastic! Thank you for this video.
Great documentary!
I do wonder why the likes of Edward VI and Richard I made the list as their impact on England perhaps would have been much less than the likes of Elizabeth I, Victoria, Edward I, Edward III and Henry V.
It would be awesome to have time stamps..
Done!
@@PeopleProfiles wow! Thank you !
There are legendary men all over now and like we are here now so will others be hearing there tales 1000 years from now
Not many legendary men in America at that time I would say.
@@alwaysflushinpublic you do realize that there were people here, yes? There were definitely legendary indigenous Americans, just because their culture was later destroyed and lost doesn’t mean they weren’t also great rulers. Europeans just have better records.
Wonderful Documentary!
Fantastic program! Thank you!
Even for an American this is interesting.
A great depiction of Ethelwulf and Alfred is in the History Channel series Vikings 😎
The thought that Alfred’s bones ended up scattered is completely disturbing. How does this happen to the father of a nation that has so much history
Can there be one with all the monarchs ? Kings and queens? I understand it would be long but I'd love to see a full comprehensive doc on ALL monarchs for england then when it became the united kingdom
Can't believe they destroyed Alfred's and his family's graves.
Gracious thanks for your utterly superb elocution.
Who is narrating this? It's very good.
I think David Starkey did a better job on monarchy
Please do the Holy Roman Empire next or the Frankish empire or even one about how many popes there’s bean or even the emperor’s of China
~29:40 A king who understands how to get metal from the landscape will have the power. (He who removes the sword from the stone...)
THANK YOU for this!!!! I love anything about The Lionheart!
Quality video, this is what is good about youtube
Waiting to hear Ultred of Bebanberg lol. Crazy finding out the show was based in history. Thought it was just fiction.
EXCELLENT !! NARRATION! SUPER GREAT ! ENJOYED ! THANKS INDEED !!! FROM U.K. (2022).
Well done for saying UK not England like everyone else.
Thank you so so much for all your work. Would you consider doing a kings of France ?
Then he'd have to put on his French accept 🙄
@@addamz3277 😅😅👏👏👏
First 2 narrators are excellent 👌
Anyone else notice how Edward IV in his portrait at time index 3:45:50, looks just like Stephen Fry!!!!
Excellent all in one ty so much
6 March 2024 Hi from Australia 🇦🇺 thankyou so much for this wonderful upload...just what I have Bern looking for! ❤
The last kingdom is a great historical fiction set during Alfred's reign
This series wraps up with Edward IV; is there a second part that continues on to at least the early 20th century?
This is fascinating.
So much history it’s awesome
This is stunning!!!!!!!! I am speechless super excellent
Small note, around 7:20, he calls Charles the Great an ancestor of Charles Martel, where the former was in fact the grandson of the latter, so a descendant, not an ancestor.
Scrap the Whole documentary!! START OVER!!
@@addamz3277 It's the only way.
Clever. You are quite perceptive and capable. You should be a PI or detective.
Incredible job 👏
For a video of this length some amount of timestamps would be much appreciated.
Done!
a 7 hour video is wild no matter what but to be this high quality is impressive, job well done yo.
Thanks for your super doc
Cheers
You omitted the fact that Assar, the Welsh monk, taught Alfred and his court to read and gave them civilized learning and knowledge of the world outside the British isles. Many of the native Briton's Holy men had seats of learning and Alfred befriended Assar and pursuaded him to teach him and those close to him.
,
No he didn't
England in the house. England is where all music comes from. Without the great English composers, you wouldn't have music today. The British navy are Legends.
Yes! Alfred earned his title "Alfred The Great"!
American. We consider a building that is 50 yrs old to be of great historical importance. Imagine our perception of a history such as this!
@@alwaysflushinpublic Don’t sell your self short. Many quaint almost English towns hamlets and villages along your east coast dating back to the 15th century. Hope to see some one day.🇬🇧👻
Incredible video! Gonna take me awhile to watch this 😂 Would love a video on Canute the great! Hope you have a great day 👍
