I served aboard the USS Forrestal. I did not know how she was built. She was stationed in Norfolk Virginia. I drove past the shipyards, but didn't know what was happening. I feel very fortunate to be living in these times. Thank you everyone involved in the building of this ship and her sister ships!

My father also has an official smaller ship named after him. it's the RV Keary, a reseach vessel operated by the geological survey of ireland (GSI), he was a pinoneering Geologist who worked for his country. I can understand how Ms Ford feels with teh lauch of the ship named after her Dad. ❤

The first of her class is always such a hurdle, especially when she's loaded with so many new systems of advanced technology which will see these behemoths as the most advanced carriers the world has ever seen, the basics have been refined since WWII, but with time comes technology, and cramming all that in, testing and refining it to perfection takes time and effort, and no better builder than Newport News to conduct such an operation of construction, and lead the way for the ships that follow in her class.
    Cheers from Aus!!!!

Ford's daughter really did get her hands dirty in building this ship!
I've seen her in a whole different light!
They should have named it after her, maybe one day the ship yard will name something after her?
    She deserves it!
She's been really inspirational to all and appreciates it more than anyone, what a credit she has been to the project!!!

    I am a Plankowner of a DD-963 Class Ship.
It is and has been a pet peeves of mine for a ship to be called a boat. I would liked to have believed that the yardbirds of today, had possibly evolved, and figured out the difference between a boat and a ship. Apparently not. Umderstand this., It's USS, United States Ship, NOT USB United States Boat.
The one, and only naval ship that can be called a boat is a Submarine.

The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) is the first in the class and added to that there were new technologies that was integrated to it. New nuclear reactors that can produce 300 more Kilowatts than the nuclear reactors in the Nimitz-class. That new nuclear reactors can provide new defensive weapons in the near future such as the railguns and lasers. Aside from that the USS Gerald R. Ford had an EMALS (Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch Systems) Catapult in contrast to the older and not so aircraft friendly steam catapults from the Nimitz-class. With those facts you just can't expect that the new USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) can be as the same price tag with the latest Nimitz aircraft carrier, USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77).

Chuck Taylor The problem isn’t in the building of the ship it’s in the unproven technology that’s gone into it. Would you want your house built with prototype technology? And in their infinite wisdom they’re building two more just like it. So now instead of one carrier that’s not able to deploy you’ll have three.

All US aircraft carriers are nuclear powered and capable of staying at sea for 20+ years without stopping.

Well you’re not always proud of everything you do, sometimes we make mistakes and regret , only ones we’re proud of are the good things we do and forever remember the greatest things you’ve done.
