House update - It'll seem like I've achieved very little and that'd be right

- 'Probably' not that awful to move the master socket... I mean, I didn't agree with open reach to put it there... Well let's just not go telling them until I sort out the cellar in a year or two.
Where you have pushed that cable through the airbrick into the cellar you will need to put a drip loop on it before it goes into the brick. If you don't, water will run down the sheath of the cable and follow it through the hole and into the cellar. Take the cable lower than the hole first and up into the hole. I've never done a renovation and I do not envy you the task, I'm amazed that you still have so much enthusiasm for the project, well done.
You're getting there, keep it up! The nerd room looks so clean and modern, just think of that room throughout the house! Going to look amazing 👍🏻👏🏻
It brings back a few nightmares to see you scraping those walls 🤣I think the worst things I've ever had to remove from a wall (in addition to multiple layers of paper) is cork tiles stuck on with contact adhesive, closely followed by Artex spread between fake exposed beams. I now despise any wall finish other than a nice lick of paint! 🎨
It really is soul sapping at times. I thing there is that cork tile in the kitchen. Can't afford to attempt that yet. 4 layers of paper feel doable, but honestly my arms are tired and I could live with the mess. Maybe just no more videos in the house and I pretend it is finished ;-)
Looks good, I was wondering how you were getting on. These projects take a while if you're doing it as well as a normal day job, but get as much done as you can in the next month or two before the dark evenings set in!
Those old English houses are neat. Plaster and lathe is god awful though. Back when I was an elechicken, I worked on a bunch of older houses that had plaster and lathe walls, mostly bringing them up to code so a friend of ours could use them as rentals for his disaster recovery business. Adding in wall sockets was always pure hell because cutting that stuff was like trying to cut iron with your 4 year old's toy saw. Running the wire could also be a bit of an adventure too.
Anyway, good luck. I know it's a crap-ton of really hard work, but once you're done, it feels really good. It might be a while before your back feels the same, but it is what it is. Lol...
Ha ha ha, that back comment is really spot on. I fondly remember the days of feeling invincible. I only managed a few hours today or ripping out skirting boards, had to give stripping wallpaper a rest today.
Its coming along, it will be great once it is all finished.
I remember the days when walkers crisps had clear windows on the front so you could see the crisps inside. Always felt cheated since.
It might not look like, but you are doing a great job. Don't be worry about the lead pipe. Solid lead is not toxic. Is when you burned it. So be careful if you plan to melt it.
You're making progress. Have you ever considered removing most of the non-structural walls to get larger rooms with fewer walls to repair and plaster? Or removing the non-structural walls to the hallway to open up the rooms and get rid of the traditional narrow tunnel and hallway doors. That might make life easier...
I think the only wall that isn't holding up the floor or ceiling is the upstairs corridor wall. I might knock out a couple between the dining room and kitchen, but I can't really afford to get that done at the moment.
There is nothing quite like watching someone use the wrong tools for rhe job. Required tools are "Paper tiger scoring tool" then a steamer, with walpaper removal, plate. I stripped 4 layers of a whole room in an afternoon.
I have all of those tools, although mine is called an orbital scoring tool. Sadly it just didn't penetrate the top layer of wallpaper, or I should say this particular top layer. Two other rooms in the house it worked fine.
@@DavidWatts Weird, perhaps just have at it with a Stanley knife, I have never had to scrape wallpaper off, even waterproof vinyls. The worst ones have required 30 seconds or so with the steamer for each square foot, and occasionally a second go. But never any amount of elbow grease, perhaps I have been lucky.
I had to get the stanley knife out in the living room but it eventually came off. I don't mind the effort with the walls upstairs, I could do with losing a few pounds.
Good luck.
The lead piping was for the gas fires and wall lights (pre electric).
Itll take a while but you will get there dont get disheartened.
I have taken out a couple of gas lamps so far but the lead piping was from the the original electric installation. They used it to reinforce the holes drilled in the wall where the fabric cables came though.
Awesome T-Shirt!
Sadly it is a little wrecked now, so it is only a DIY top. Must be like 10 years old, maybe more.
I’d watch a ‘David removes wallpaper montage’ at x2 speed
Your wish has been granted.
i rented a wall paper steamer. it still was a helluva job. some times you find a patch of wallpaper and be able to rip off a large section whole. such a good feeling. :)
I bought a steamer but it kinda wrecked the walls using it. It was find on some sections but on others it blew out the plaster behind. They might work better on wallpaper that hasn't been up for 40-50 years. And you are so right, when a big bit comes off it feels like such a win.
How can you leave the PET in a room like that, have a heart man. ;-)
The safest place is where I can see it.
Tell me you've had everything (like those tiles) tested for asbestos already!
Of course...
The extra wires are for future upgrades that never happened.
BTW it should be about 50V DC!
Black, is that Aluminium wire instead of copper?
If it is you will struggle to get over 50Meg internet according to our local BT engineer.
Fibre should be coming to my area next year so I will bin off the BT line then. Right now I get around 50mb down and 18mb up which is ok.
@@DavidWatts I remember the days...PHONE>ISDN>ADSL>VDSL>COAX>FIBRE :)
I recall the dialup days but I was only 10 or so at my mates house. Our house couldn't afford to get connected till like 2002.
@@DavidWatts we still have the flu line but only just got the fiber
@@DavidWatts Community Fibre have been installing like crazy here in South London (it runs over the telephone poles rather than underground).
I use Virgin now (100Mb). Their 1Gb package is cheaper...
Plastering is an easier Job . Check brilliant or the others for a course . Will pay off for sure
