      @@maxw6004 they won't steal your content because it isn't even your content. It's THEIR content. THEY own it. And that's the issue. They might not sell your maps (although they could), but the might demand a cut of your profits if you ever use a map made in Inkarnate in any of your commercial works, even if you have a pro-account. They could even keep you from selling any of your maps at all because they own them, so they get to decide what you can and cannot do with your maps. Now personally I think Inkarnate maps always look a bit amateuristic, so I'd never use them for any professional work, but for those who do consider using Inkarnate maps for anything outside of their own personal D&D games, should expect complications.

Then I drew another which was much better but still not quite there. After like 3-4 maps and like 40-50 hrs in total over a couple of months I really started to draw pretty good maps and my players are delighted. So I bought this after watching the video. Compared to inkarnate, I think this tool was designed more with a DM or GM in mind. It’s way more user friendly in accomplishing tasks related to making a map that needs to be used. The overlay feature is vital for me in that it allows me to do things like zoom up an area of a kingdom map to create a local map from it while preserving scale. The road, river, and coastline tools are massive time savers. I’m almost moved to tears. I do think inkarnate makes a prettier finished product. The symbols in Wonderdraft seem more 2d to me. But I’ll take that. Besides, it looks like it allows you import your own custom stuff, so maybe that can be rectified. I’m thinking a combination approach might even work better. Make the landmass, add roads and rivers in wonderdraft...import into inkarnate for the mountains and trees and stuff.

      Im a fairly new DM and have created a world of several continents by hand on paper. Seeing this made me wonder if it would be possible to import something hand-drawn and modified from there within Womderdraft? I have never tried a computer generated approach to map making but I am definitely interested after seeing how easy to use this program is. Thoughts?

    • @xezazase
      @xezazase 5 лет назад +2

      Kyle Evans I’d say it’s worth a try. It’s pretty cheap, so it’s not like it would hurt your wallet that much if you don’t find it useful. I’d prefer to do it all by hand, it’s more about time to me. Using things like Wonderdraft and Inkarnate allows me to have beautiful maps while
      saving me time. I can use that extra time to flesh out the characters and history of these places, and to work on upcoming plots. Maps are a lot of fun for me...I have to remind myself that it’s just another tool to use to make this story happen.
      Scan your hand drawn map (or take a photo of it if you’re poor like me with no scanner), import it as the overlay, adjust the grid so the squares (or hexes) line up with the hand drawn map, slide the transparency down so you can see both it and what you’re drawing in Inkarnate, then use the tools in it to sorts trace everything from the original. If you want to make full maps of each area of your continent maps, do the same thing, but zoom up on that area of the original, set the grid/scale appropriately (for me: world = 400 miles per square, region = 100, kingdom = 20, local = 5)

    • @michimatsch5862
      @michimatsch5862 5 лет назад +1

      @@MegaDraconus It is quite simple actually scan your map as a png file and you can use it in inkarnate.
      Granted, the software won't recognize the symbols you used and other stuff but you can add new stuff to it. And there is always the brush option I guess.

    Inkarnate is NOT for commercial novel writing, they own every asset you use and essentially, they own your map. Not to mention Inkarnate has a lot of really annoying quirks and features that Wonderdraft beats them on by default. Definitely buy Wonderdraft if you're a commercial author.

    • @3YE_Reality
      @3YE_Reality Год назад

      My question is why are you using any program to make maps? Every time I see a map, the best maps, were done by very talented people from very simple maps, to incredible maps. Just pay a person $20 and you will probably get a very nice map. Besides that what does wonderdraft have that Inkarnate doesn't? I feel like its the opposite and would love to know. Trying to figure this out to see if I should switch.

    • @deffdefying4803
      @deffdefying4803 Год назад +1

      @@3YE_Reality With a program, especially land generators, you can change the map entirely on the fly whenever it suits you. With a person, yes you get a nice map, but there has to be a lot of back and forth between you and the artist to get exactly what you want, which can take a while if they don't have live communication (such as videocalling). And ultimately, you are the only person who can know precisely what your world calls for; a second person can only interpret so much.

    • @3YE_Reality
      @3YE_Reality Год назад

      @@deffdefying4803 Yeah, but the comment I am replying to is for commercial purposes and it doesn't actually seem like Inkarnate can't be used for commercial purposes. Yeah a program can definitely help with ease and quick development, I use Inkcarnate basically daily. But for high detail and if you do a rough sketch of a map that you want made by hand or even a guy who will use a program themselves they can make incredible maps. Even if you want to keep using the same artist, might increase the price, but you can say like hey I looked at the map, I need this mountain range moved, water source here, etc, etc. I wouldn't use a hand drawn map until I had a world fully flushed out to begin with and just do quick hand sketches until I knew what I would want. Now if this was for something like DnD or other high fantasy I would definitely use a program as I am already, because it makes it easier and much more entertaining.

    Got this tool just after I saw your video, took me 4 hours and I created 3 entire maps aready for my group that 'll keep them occupied for centuries. Amazing tool!!
    Edit: Ok, my first edit didnt get saved for some reason, so here I go again. I have two criticisms:
    1. You cannot turn objects, only labels, though I will admit it is nice that you can press alt and mirror the object along the Y axis.
    2. You can "paint" with things like trees, mountains, hills etc, but you cant paint with objects like buildings or cliffs. The paint option for buildings would be incredibly nice, and I don't really understand why it's not implemented.
    Edit 2: More things I came up with is: Copy and paste objects. You can mark objects like on your desktop (mass selection), and can move them, but cant alter them in any way else or even copy/paste it.
    Then there is a better colorpallette workflow. I know it is nitpicky, but it would be amazing to just select a color, copy paste it in the palette and then change it so you can blend more easily. Like I said, I know you can copy the Hex code, but this would cut the middleman. Also: Save Color Palettes for future use. I started a new project and I had to create a new palette to use instead of getting the old one imported to use.

    I really,really like how this works as a general world map maker,but inkarnate simply has more uses. Like with inkarnate I can create world maps,close up city maps,very detailed region maps,dungeon maps and maps for specific scenes to basically just use as reference art for the players.
    There's no doubt that Wondercraft is better when it comes to making stuff like continental maps,but since this can't really be used to make those close up maps etc I don't think it's inkarnate killer since I would still have to use inkarnate to make all those other things.

    and can you color/font code the labels?
    so far I did so by making a topographic map and using plastic paper to make the different layers removable. but making maps by hand is very tiresome and too time consuming for me right now, plus my drawings suck. But I really don't want to give up that mapping method

    looks like it would outcompete everything else if it just had basic opacity and feather/hardness controls that photoshop users will be really frustrated to not have. missing that i'd personally just prefer to use photoshop, though i recognize there's a lot of initial setup that goes into making photoshop efficient for that. but at least once you do all that, downloading or defining brushes yourself mainly, you'll have the kind of control you need to really blend the shading. i think the one feature here that's really cool is the auto land generation. that makes it useful in itself, there are other programs that can generate landforms and browser apps and so on, but their output doesn't look as stylish and thematic as this does. so i'd probably be inclined to use this to generate the initial landmass, then just save it and do the rest in photoshop. maybe do some of the basic coloring in wonderdraft since it isolates the land from the water when you're brushing it.
