An interesting and historically accurate bonus for Mangudai would be to make them fire while in motion. I remember a Polish beer commercial used the process of making a recursive, Mongol bow step by step. At the end, the two characters test the bow, but they're not experienced, so the results are mediocre. Then one of them remarks 'A mongol horse archer could accurately fire at a target in the middle of a gallop, and he'd release the arrow in the moment no hooves were touching the ground, to not throw the aim away'
It would have to be an historically accurate bonus for literally every cavalry archer unit... say Berbers for example, as well. But firing in motion would absolutely turn the entire game mechanics around, and make it so much worse. The game mechanics were purposefully designed to not include fire in motion for any unit, because that would absolutely break the game. Granted, when I first played AoE2, I thought Parthian Tactics gave a fire-while-moving ability...good days.

When Sandy mentions the AoE1 cav archer he probably means the horse archer, which is available in age 4. It's not cheap like chariots but it had like 2 pierce armour (something very rare in AoE1) and after is heavy upgrade it becomes the fastest unit in the game, which means infinite hit and run, and their range isn't short either.
When I was playing through the Age of Empires 1 campaigns it was can make chariot archers, then spam those cheapy. If I could make horse archers, then spam those. I'd mix in a few siege units. Unit design was very bad in AoE1. Honestly Sandy could of meant both as well.

At 4:02, how do you get +67% fire rate bonus for Assyrian Chariot Archers? Most editions of AoE1 (not patched afaik) give Assyrians a +36% fire rate bonus or 27% shorter reload time.
I always disliked how much better the Mangudai was since visually I actually liked the regular Cavalry Archer more. They feel alot better now, so I'm very happy with the changes!
Mongolian Cavalry Archers having a faster firing rate fits into history, too, since they were known for being able to hold extra arrows between their fingers while they fired one, and could knock and loose all the arrows in their hand before the first arrow struck its target. MUCH faster than anyone who returned to the quiver for each successive shot.
Mangudai is king, it's very fitting for the elite of the mongols to be one of the most fearsome units in the game, if you were a general of a great empire, you'd probably resign and beg for mercy seeing a few hundred of the most elite mongols charging at you.
I bought that disc that you that had the all the different versions of game one game two back in 2004 and I laid that s*** everyday I loved the original age of Kings
Remember they're being this weird glitch in the original conquerors where if you're playing against AI they wouldn't attack your villagers even if you walked right inside the base with one
In the early days the Mongol campaign was very tough when you didn't know the mechanics of the game well and relied on regular generic civ gameplay. But today, the campaign difficulty is less due to us knowing mechanics and knowing what we are up against and what the map looks like. #2: I used to rely exclusively on making knights for the castle age to run them down, until #3 when they have the cavaliers (only Jin though) where I used the power of the mangudai to take on #3, #5, and #6. But for #4 the Persian elephants were a problem. #3. I used to try to live in the blue area at the start, but that was not very beneficial given the wonder and frequent siege rams with fully upgraded imperial age army harassing your starting area as you try to research the techs before going to deal with the wonder. But then I rely on going after Jin and their resources, this will not only make it harder for them to afford the wonder, but to make sure that the other 3 enemies are not able to get to you. #4. The russians used to be goths until they became slavs. Huskarls used to be a problem for my cav archers and subotai while knights and long swordsmen used to need something to counter them. It was tough unless you were able to aggressively rush them is the only way to make sure to at the start to go after them before they grow their economy while you are still sending the trade carts to the shah. On the other side, you need to build a few pieces of wall to prevent the Persians from making problems to you on that side. Once the red are unable to afford a villager or make units, the ai will simply be alive just on their buildings (they might resign depending on how the ai is coded). Trade with their market for extra gold, I usually take all gold piles on the map and never enough to afford all techs and making the armies I need, but I reach 1 million wood and sell plenty of wood for lower gold. For the green, I just convert their cavalry archers and get all of them, but recently they changed to making skirmishers from their archery ranges that you have to kill them to get the green to change ownership to you. and for the yellow, I used to rely on pikemen for the most cost effective way to deal with the elephants or simply used forward castles to deal with them. But now with the higher population and nomads, my army shreds 620 hp very fast despite their armor. #5. This scenario changed significantly not to mention the changes in the European civilizations along with #6. The biggest problem with mangudai is that when fighting against bohemian siege onagers they throw their balls in a location that really hits you hard as you try to dodge and we were not familiar with using the advanced buttons to make them move aside.
Many changes since the beginning, but what hasn't changed is that one should beware the Kara Kitai. They are without honour.

Do you playing Magic the Gethering?
Mangudai walks into a bar...
Mangudai is king, it's very fitting for the elite of the mongols to be one of the most fearsome units in the game, if you were a general of a great empire, you'd probably resign and beg for mercy seeing a few hundred of the most elite mongols charging at you.
I'm probably the only one that still prefers the OG AOE II.
*throat singing intensifies*
Do Britons next
All that tinkering and the mangudai is still "just don't let them get mangudai lmfao"=
this must be why i thought mangadai (or the huns ) could fire arrow backward 🤣
I'm honestly wondering how Mongol's campaign change following the civ's growth
Behold! The horde of Genghis Khan approaches!
