Cant lie to you wingy, from this point onwards is my favourite era of doctor who EVER. There’s a few stories that are miss but honestly, the rest of the web of time arc and divergent arc are amazing. I really hope you enjoy them and I’m looking forward to your reviews!!
This one doesn't get too much love. Kinda regarded as "another Mark Gatis one". Got a quote from Rob Shearman on it: "I've always thought 'Invaders of Mars' was a sublimely clever idea. I remember (thirteen years ago, my God) being back at the pub meet, where all the writers for this McGann season met to tell everyone else what they were up to. I envied it immediately. It was the best sort of 'romp', one that had a genuinely witty premise behind it. I think poor old Invaders has come in for a bit of stick over the years due to its placing in the season. There was a bit of a gap between the first McGann set of audios and this one, and expectations were set very high - and (until Russell did the same thing with the TV series, and we all began to get used to it), as an audience we expected our seasons to begin with something big and epic, not slight and frothy. I ought to say it was my fault, really. 'Chimes of Midnight' was supposed to be the season opener, but I pushed the Charley story arc along further than it should have been pushed - and so my story was bumped back, and Mark's was put in the front line instead. Context is everything with these audios, especially the way this blog studies them - I've always suspected Invaders might have had an easier time of it had I fulfilled my writing brief more accurately…"
I really liked this episode, even the sounds between each scenes. It gave the whole thing a certain mood that felt like an old horror from the era it was based on/in. I do think this one gets underlooked. Not saying it's a top one but I think it's better than people give it credit for. I don't think Gattis wrote much audios but prefer these to his actual TV episodes. Really exited for you to listen to the next one and see what you think. I love horror but reading the synopsis I thought this sounded like a very genetic horror but it's so fun and mysterious. Probably also sums up what is missing from the current TV show
I think this was the first of the McGann stories where I truly started to appreciate McGann as The Doctor. Also, I have always appreciated the idea of doing a historical episode of the audio drama series with THE iconic radio drama
As someone who used to work in Radio Drama I loved the link to War of the Worlds in this one. It’s been a long time since I last listened to it though. Should revisit.
wingy, thanks for this review. This is a story that I remember liking but don't think about much, and it's nice to see a stand alone review for it. Interested in seeing what you think of the rest of this audio series with 8 and charley. For me, the next 5 or 6 audios are some of the best doctor who there is, and it'll be nice to see what you think of them
It's funny how I was the complete opposite. I really liked the set up and while the pay off was good, I liked the set up more. Because I like the idea of The Doctor running around 1930s NY pretending to be a PI. It's funny, but is also really reminiscent of the 1950s B movies. And I really liked that. However, the thing I didn't like was that the aliens were just generic bat creatures rather than looking like little green men or something like that. Like I wish they went farther with the 1950s B movie homages. But even with that, it's one of my favorite McGann stories that I've listened to.
I always look at this story the same way I do about a 5th Doctor story Red Dawn: interesting setup & potential to be a really good story but ultimately just ends up being a little underwhelming imo
Not too sure what the general opinion of this story is but I found it to be pretty fun and enjoyable, though I can't say it really left a long term impact
Always found this story to be veeeeery dull and tedious to follow. Just not a fan, don't know why 😄 the next audio though, now that's a different story 👀

Yes! You've done the ones before Chimes of Midnight! Now go listened to Chimes of Midnight! Like RIGHT NOW

Glad to hear from you wingy you haven't put up a video in ages. I missed your wicked sense of humour
This still starts my favourite season of the 8th Doctor (that I've listened to)

I think the next story is Chimes, Chimes is fucking great

No need to thank me! I must admit, I've heard a lot of good things about the next few stories so I'm very excited
I would love to see a mini series set between Classic Who and revived Who with Paul McGann.
Don't we all!!! Mcgann deserves more screentime!!!!

The Orson Welles "WotW's mass hysteria" has been debunked. McGann deserves a series. He's a fairly big name, yet the BBC won't touch him.
I just finished listening to bang bang a boom
How far until Chimes of Midnight? Will we get the review for Christmas?
COM is the very next story
Heard good things about this one, still making my way into Big Finish, really enjoying it atm.
more reviews?
Great video Alex. You need to be uploading more though. You didn't hit your 10K target last year because of the inconstancy of uploads.
Totally fair, things in life got in the way and tbh, I did lose my enthusiasm for RUclips
@@WingyMedia be a shame if you lose your enthusiasm for youtube. Love watching your take on dr who. Hope we get more uploads from you soon again
do a video on The Batman
I agree with you Wingy that the second half of this story is better. But overall its a pretty good story imo.
Yay I'm early
