Oysters used to be so numerous, people had to dredge NY Harbor to allow ships to pass. The water was clean form the oyster's.filtration, and sea life was abundant. But now they are a delicacy. Like lobsters were so plentiful farmers pulled them out of thr ocean and fed them to hogs. Then they sold them to be prison food. Then they shipped them out to the midwest as a delicacy. Loke cod. Used to be so plentiful fishermna would row their boats out of thr harbor and just drop baskets in the water and pull them back up with cod in it. Now, cod is hard to fidn and in small schools. Humans overfished, over harvested, thinking it would never end. Glad we're doing sustainable oyster farming.
