1.6k for a 8GB RAM laptop is insane especially in 2022 and with the fact they offer a 24GB option… just make 16GB the standard across all the options, Apple is frustrating.
Definitely expensive, but keep in mind that unified memory is way faster and way more efficient than RAM with intel machines, and of course, MacOS has gotten more efficient as well in the last few years. We compared 8GB M1 to 16GB intel-based Macs using the same latest OS, and the 8GB performed shockingly well in terms of stressing the RAM and how much it slowed down when RAM was full compared to original numbers. In post responsiveness and performance the 8GB performs like 16GB used to, and so on unless you have a specific task that has to keep things in the RAM as storage, but even then if it does slow down its still way faster than intel because of performance increases. Not saying that Apple shouldn't give us more, but Apple Silicon works great with less ram. It also has tile memory so a lot of graphics tasks don't hit the ram and stay there, and there is way less duplication of files in memory than before.

@@CaptureCat88 Apple actually hasn't made their products that much more expansive. in 2015 the 13 inch MBA was 999 dollar the new one is 1199. If you look at inflation rates this is a reasonable increase. apple can't help that the dollar loses buying power. But I agree I sucks anyway, at least it doesn't have the butterfly keyboard and fluxgate issue like my MacBook has.
Why isn't any RUclipsr mentioning the obvious, that if you spec the new Air to the same ram and 512gb storage as the 14 inch (which in sure a lot of people will as 8gb and 256gb really doesn't cut it at this price point), there's a very little price difference for a lot more features in the 14 inch? You need to make a buyer's guide video comparing the Air to the 14 inch Pro because the price jump in the Air has made the 14 inch a lot more compelling, even for someone who isn't a video editor, because they both fall into similar price ranges if you spec the Air to any degree. You get a larger screen, far superior XDR display, far more ports that ends the dongle life, slightly thinner bezels, far more powerful chip that will ultimately give you more headroom into the future, better sustained performance, naming just a few improvements, all for just a little over 200 bucks of a difference which could be even less if you go to the Apple refurbished store or sales on Amazon (which we definitely should see in Amazon's Prime Day sales next month when the Air releases)
but thats based on the assumption that a MBA buyer will want to uprade the ram and ssd u talked about. Many MBA buyers actually dont. maybe ur circumstance is special, but i think anyone whos going to upgrade a MBA should realise that the base model MBP might be better for them for a few more dollars I think most people that even do upgrades are already in the pro category. Decking out a cheaper version is just dumb (unless you really need that ssd space)
doesn't the m2 have ~20% improvement in single core performance? maybe I'm misinterpreting the charts (as vague as they are), but to me that seems like a big improvement in a lot of things, e.g. web development which I would be using it for
@@jellymusicallies4592 those people who don't need the ram or the ssd then they are better getting a current M1 MBA, since they probably don't need the extra power either...
Would love to see a video doing comparison between M2 MacBook Air vs M1 Max 14 inch MacBook Pro (purely based on price and keeping aside whether or not you are pro user). When you add some upgrades to base M2 Air, it quickly comes into the territory of 14inch pro. And at that point I want to understand if it makes sense to go with 14inch pro to get better screen, better transfer speeds, better ports, better performance etc.
I would say that if you're going to spend the same and your objective is performance, choose the Pro. The M1 Pro is already more powerful than M2, so you've got that. The Air has no fan and will get hotter much quicker, even though that's not a daily issue. For light work, I would only care to get the 10-core M2 and that's it. Otherwise it would defeat the point of spending less for the Air compared to the Pro.
I have no experience with the M1 MacBook Air. How does it compare in weight to the MacBook Pro 14"? It's hard to imagine how much difference .7 or .8 lbs makes in regular use, movement and transport. And at the Apple store, they don't really let you hold a MacBook Air without being tethered (antitheft). So I can't get a gauge of how it really feels compared to the 14".
It feels significantly lighter. The Pro 14 isn't bulky, by any means, but as a smaller person it definitely felt substantial to me. I exclusively used 14 inch windows computers before I picked up a Macbook Pro 14 for work and it feels heavier/more bulky than the other ultrabooks I've owned. It's not cumbersome but it is noticeable. The Air feels like, well, air. It's so light that it feels like some of the tablets I own. For a while, I was worried about the build quality and performance because of how darn light it was. It performs well from what I've noticed, though. So while on paper, it's not a big difference, you can definitely tell, especially if you're a smaller person. Neither is going to be a problem in transport/daily use; I only really notice it while I'm carrying my laptop around with one hand
Why I love Max Tech is because of these practical videos. All other channels just review the MacBook and tell us what we already know from the keynote or website 👍
Many comments here and RUclips review videos keep repeating the same issue: "for $100, you can get the next better version, and for $200 you can get the best 14" option available so no one should get the 24gb RAM version". Yes, majority of buyers care a lot about total costs and compare it to the next best option, but there are also those that want the lightest laptop they can have (2.7 lbs) in the smallest size factor (13.6”) with a powerful 24gb RAM and 2 tb of memory, eve if they are now into near M1 Max territory. Some people just want to buy what they want (lightest laptop available) with maybe some future proofing (24gb RAM instead of 16gb RAM) regardless of costs as it is a type of investment for their own joy. Some people do not want to lug around a 16” heavy laptop or may not care about a micro-LED screen or even extra ports.
In India the price starts from ₹119990 for M2 Macbook air...while the M1 macbook air starts from ₹99990..which was earlier available at ₹92000 during launch. Well played Apple 🍎:(
Currently have a 2009 iMac but want to get rid of the cluttered desktop. I use an external 2 TB drive Bluetooth keyboard and the Magic Mouse. Is the MacBook Air M1 compatible with the old external drive and the Magic Mouse? The hype of it is nice but when I look at it I'm a post grad student . I'm just using it for productivity so the M1 air is more than enough for me. Nothing to justify the M2 other than it being new and nice so maybe I'll just hold back and get the m1

modern ssd's last ages. I have yet to have an ssd fail, even ones i've had for a decade and been writing to constantly. I kindof doubt ram swap will be able to kill one of these ssd's
That's a common myth over reddit and rest of internet. Swapping could have caused shortening a ssd life, but only if few TB's written every month, and m1 air still could be good for 2 or 3 years. Laptop is not a baby, there is a higher chance of screen damage than ssd wear and tear,
You mean the m1 pro? It is good you are asking because you have little to no clue what you are talking about. I could tell you the answer and explain why but I'm not going to take away the sense of accomplishment you'll have when you actually do some work for yourself.
As always, thank you for the guidance on the MacBook products. Looking forward to the availability, I think for my use, 512 GB and 16 GB memory is my sweet spot.
Thanks for review. Looking forward to hands-on reviews. I see no reason to buy Apple power supplies - much better (and smaller) options out there. I have a MBP with M1 Max and have only ever used power supply that came with it once. At home office I use a powerbrick/hub (ADG) that supplies power and connectivity to extra display, external drive, network, etc so just plug in a single TB cable and am done. On road, I carry and INVZI 100W supply that is half the size of Apple supply AND has extra ports - and even then, the battery is so good I rarely need to pull it out whereas with my old Intel MBP, even for an hour meeting I would plug in so I didn’t deplete battery. Likewise I don’t care that it charges a bit slower than 140W as rarely tight on power. I could use MagSafe cable with it but since I carry TB cables anyway for various purposes, just one more cable to carry so I don’t bother (maybe if I only had two TB ports like on an Air or was back in classrooms where I was worried about tripping over cord, it might make a difference). Just my 2¢, but generally followed by everyone in my company. (Obviously if I ran laptop all out for hours and hours a day, that would be the one time I might need 140W and MagSafe). Thanks again.
I always consult RUclips reviews before I buy any apple products. A few years ago I bought the MacBook Air (2020) and it got as hot as max said and the battery drained insanely fast like he warned it would. I ended up returning it and got the 4 Thunderbolt port pro instead and it’s been going strong for going on 3 years now! Keep in mind, I only use it for school, writing lots and lots of essays; but, the upgraded ram keeps my computer running smoothly and it was 100% worth it. I made the mistake of not upgrading it once years ago and I said I never would again. In my opinion it’s valuable no matter what because it makes your computer run smoothly all the time.
I agree that the M1 Air is the value proposition for many people, especially students. You might even wait a month or two when the M2 starts shipping to see what impact this has on M1 pricing. The combination of performance and superior battery life makes the M1 a top choice for the general user.
Thank you for the advice mate, I'm way out of my depth lol I've never owned a Macbook but need to replace my dilapidated laptop in the next couple of months. I don't need one immediately upon release, so I like the idea of keeping an eye on the cost of the M1, especially as I'm not needing the Air for programming, expert photo editing or online gaming etc, just general day to day browsing, streaming and doing the accounts and "office" tasks 👍
Yeah but I feel people forget that education pricing is a thing, I feel the majority of MacBook Air users are students anyway, and with the education prices it’s actually quite reasonable
Lol no, not a *value* proposition at all if you ask me. For a cheaper price of $750, you might as well buy a ZenBook 14 OLED which is arguably better in almost every aspect.
@@anmolagrawal5358 The Zenbook is interesting. It would be good to compare performance and battery life. One review noted that the fan can get loud and the laptop can get hot. Battery life is around 7 hours. I think the M1 Air might be better unless you want to stay with Windows.
Hey, MaxTech as a buyer's advice I would state if someone is looking at the new M2 and starts specking it out, that once it reaches 2k they should start looking at the MBP 14.
The main issue with RAM is the memory leak in M1. So having more RAM might prevent it at least partially. I really hope it's not gonna be the issue in M2 models.
This is the best M2 video I have seen yet. I love the 'use cases' section of your video as this definitely helped me and I'm sure many others out significantly. I was wondering what you think would be a good choice for those who code and do video editing. I am trying to decide between the 8 core GPU vs the 10 core GPU (of course, I will still be waiting for your comparison video in the future) and would like to hear what you think. Thanks!
I am buying one 16gb of ram 512gb or storage. I am a college student and I need that extra ram because I edit video and do coding a lot and I think that will do for me
As someone who did a ton of work on a 8gb macbook air, with tons of video editing etc. How is your SSD health? I'm curious, i've been using my Macbook pro with 8gbs of ram for almost a year now, and it's holding up surprisingly well. Although, i haven't done tons of work on it (yet), but i'm still concerned about swap and ssd health. Can you shed some light on this? I'd love to see a one year of intensive use on a 8gb macbook air when going through ssd wear and things like that :)
I have an M1 air 8GB (512), and it really seems to not be up to the task that is my normal use. I think the main problem is that I like having A LOT of open tabs on Chrome (currently trying firefox, which doesn't seem to be doing much better). A lot means something between 20 and 60 normally, but with auto tab discard which is supposed to save a lot of the resources. Does that sound like the kind of thing that would make a computer like mine hang? Would 16GB fair significantly better or would those number of tabs be too much for that too?
No reason to buy the M2 Macbook Air and upgrade it to 16gb ram, 1tb Ssd and 10 core gpu... Better just buy the Macbook pro 14 because the price difference is so close, also You'll have better display / screen realestate, heat management and port selection.

It gets to the point you might as well just go pro and for 100 more dollars I would say it would be worth it !
I love my 16” MBP M1 Pro but I’m considering the M2 MBA. Watching the video comparing the M1 Pro to the M2 it seems to be a slight difference as far as performance. I don’t push my MBP at all, but got it due to the buttery life, smooth 120hz refresh rate, port options, and the beautiful screen. Only cons with the MBP in my opinion though is that it’s heavy as hell when handling it after some time and that two pound difference next to the MBA is significant. Can’t wait for your comparison videos to come to either justify my purchase of the MBP or lean towards the MBA with its features in real world performance. Let’s see.

but thats based on the assumption that a MBA buyer will want to uprade the ram and ssd u talked about. Many MBA buyers actually dont.
maybe ur circumstance is special, but i think anyone whos going to upgrade a MBA should realise that the base model MBP might be better for them for a few more dollars
I think most people that even do upgrades are already in the pro category. Decking out a cheaper version is just dumb (unless you really need that ssd space)
yeap!! spot on.. and this is exactly what apple want us to do!!
doesn't the m2 have ~20% improvement in single core performance?
maybe I'm misinterpreting the charts (as vague as they are), but to me that seems like a big improvement in a lot of things, e.g. web development which I would be using it for
@@jellymusicallies4592 those people who don't need the ram or the ssd then they are better getting a current M1 MBA, since they probably don't need the extra power either...
@@ridar4407 my 12" macbook feels like heaven, also it has the best speakers, the most important.

They increased prices with 170 euros.

The major drawback of the tiny two port charger is that it doesn't support the duck head adapters which are invaluable for international travelers
It does actually. I found it on Amazon already with my countries plug type.
@@kostubh23 I think they were referring to swappable adapters on the charger. Which means the head can be changed depending on where you are travelling internationally. It doesn’t look like the dual port charger has a removable head like the 30 or 67 watt charger.

Why not mentioning about memory swap? That's one of main reason to opt for more ram to prolong the ssd life.
modern ssd's last ages.
Laptop is not a baby, there is a higher chance of screen damage than ssd wear and tear,
We did a full video on it: ruclips.net/video/nuOBsXOaP38/видео.html
My question is which spec is more important for longevity- the slightly higher single core speed of M2, or the 200gb/s Ram on M1X vs 100gb/s on M2?
You mean the m1 pro? It is good you are asking because you have little to no clue what you are talking about. I could tell you the answer and explain why but I'm not going to take away the sense of accomplishment you'll have when you actually do some work for yourself.
M1 macbook air is really a quite capable machine which can beat almost 99% windows laptops out there
As always, thank you for the guidance on the MacBook products. Looking forward to the availability, I think for my use, 512 GB and 16 GB memory is my sweet spot.
I got lucky cause I went to costco and purchased the 10 core - 521 ssd plus 35w charger and only paid the basic price that was cool
Black (midnight) Color, it is enough for me.
Just shut up and take my money !!! 🤣🤣🤣
@@abdullahqaiser6050 Good points. But if I were a student I would still buy an M1 Air and spend the money I saved on something fun.

Most people are not video editors. Most people want to know what spec for Parallels to run smoothly
Well it would definitely help
chrome uses a ton of ram, 16 would sort it for you

Let’s see.
