    CHRIS!!! Bro, we gotta hear a full version of “Show me how to live” That was EASILY your best vocal yet to date (at least in my opinion) You didn’t have too much nasal, you set well in your register, and your leaps and vocal style switches were flawlessly executed. Not to mention the nice gritty yell at the end, I mean that had so much resonance and grit perfectly placed and controlled. Well done good Sir!

    I was having this exact problem when you made this. What I would do is start a low comfortable rasp then force it upwards and that got exhausting 'cos I ended up using tension. Your way of starting high and clean then going down and adding rasp absolutely worked! That way I start with no tension then gradually learn to increase the rasp.

      How do you do this without damaging your vocal cords? I've been trying to get this kind of distortion on my voice for a long time, but every time I practice I just blow out my voice. I've seen so many videos on how to engage the false cords above the vocal cords, but I can't seem to isolate them and just hurt my throat and vocals by practicing. I can kind of fake it sometimes for a song or two and it sounds kind of ok, but it trashes my voice and throat and I can't keep singing. I feel like I'm just missing some key thing that is keeping me from doing this and if I could just figure out that secret then everything else would fall in line.

    • @DanceWithAmps
      @DanceWithAmps Месяц назад

      @@adidas2684 These high ones aren't using false chord distortion like Phil Anselmo. Its more like Sammy Hagar / Vince Neil. Its using vocal fry and it barely needs any support behind it. You can even do it more quietly than talking volume. Just combine vocal fry (like the Grudge sound / Elmer Fudd) and go "wahh wahh wahh" (quickly, not drawn out) like a baby crying and make it very nasal and annoying 'cos that makes it easier to activate the fry. Practise raising the pitch of "wahh wahh wahh". If you feel it rumble in your throat (close to vocal chords) then you're doing it wrong. It should feel like a sparkle near the nose

    • @adidas2684
      @adidas2684 Месяц назад

      @DanceWithAmps I can do the vocal fry easy. I can even pitch it up and down decently. I dont have the same range as clean, but I think that is expected and can improve with practice.
      Still, when I try to put any amount of volume behind it to get above a whisper, it starts hurting after a short time. I can get up to a normal speaking volume, but that's about my max volume and it always makes my throat sore and my voice goes out.

    • @DanceWithAmps
      @DanceWithAmps Месяц назад

      @@adidas2684 The mistake I made was starting with vocal fry then making it loud and moving it to the right pitch. Best way to practise is to start clean and make sure you can get to the desired pitch and volume/resonance with no tension (if you're using mixed-voice you should be able to get super-high, like Queen of the Reich, with no tension). Then you add fry on top of that. This is essentially the exercise Chris Liepe is demonstrating.

    • @adidas2684
      @adidas2684 Месяц назад

      @DanceWithAmps he was showing the exercise as start clean, go low, add fry, then bring it up. I can do that, but when I get to kind of a normal speaking volume, it starts to hurt after a little while.
      I know I also struggle a little with compression when trying to add fry. I can do it clean pretty well. Especially belting. I have a harder time with compression at lower volumes and when adding vocal fry.
      I dont know if that's just want I need to get better at and maybe other stuff will get easier? Or if I'm doing something else wrong.

Like that old lady from SpongeBob when they sell chocolate. Imitating her is easy, but if I tried to do that while singing I'd blow out my larynx

    Chris, you used to avoid "cookie monster" grit like the plague! What brought about this change? You told me that five minutes after using cookie monster grit, you couldn't use it anymore. How has that changed? Cookie monster is a technique that doesn't require compression, right?

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  2 месяца назад +1

      No change. I don't recommend leaning into cookie monster as a main source of distortion. Notice, with this exercise, we start with it to feel out the height of the engagement, but then as soon as we start leaning into the exercise, we remove cookie monster and just use the notes. It's being used here as a way to feel out a particular coordination. We use it... then we lose it :)
