  • As another multiplatform controller support / cheat enabling device gets banned on PlayStation, we take some time this week to discuss the accessibility impact on shutting out adaptors which support non standard controller options.

Would agree with this. I also would love to see Sony and MS also allow for just standardize audio as well. At least Nintendo eventually allowed full Bluetooth audio support but would love to see MS and Sony open up as well.

I've been playing Death Stranding on iPad recently, and the fact that iOS requires support for all three console button layouts kinda blows my mind to be thinking of this PlayStation game with button prompts for my Switch controller (even the on-screen buttons can be labeled as such). We're so close to a solution, but all the players like being proprietary in their own way.

I will *always* desire and openly advocate for there to be an industry standard for input devices, always. And the ability to fully remap every button as a unique option. Something like how the steam controller works, but not specifically tied to one platform. We're already half way there b/c all the controllers connect either via bluetooth or usb afaik.
I LOVE my steam controller, and I wish I could use it on things other than a pc. console manufacturers may not like this b/c they can't sell us $80 controllers over and over (and over) again lol, but it'd be so much better for the industry as a whole, imo.

While it is a bit of a hassle, you can use the Steam Controller with any current console. I can give you more details if you want, but basically you can stream to your PC and use any device you want on that PC.

the older i get the less my joints can tolerate repetitive button presses so for some games like farming sims where you have to hit a button over and over to harvest crops or water with the basic watering can i use a controller with a turbo function. i dont think anyone would call me a cheater for that but if i used the same controller in some multiplayer games i can see it being cheating and I cant really think of any way to enforce not using it in some specific games but allow it in others.

    Great video as always!
In my opinion, there is zero chance that this is just about a fair playing field. Because you know how to do it in a good way? Add a system-wide icon for players to indicate that they are using a third-party, non-standard thingamabob (technical term), so that they cannot “cheat” in online competitions (they already can’t do that in in-person events, for obvious reasons). Not a perfect solution, but way, way better than just banning all those devices for everyone, even people who don’t play anything online.

I got a similar device because my son, who has a number of issues, was getting a PS5 for Christmas and it was to allow him to use cheaper, wired controllers because he had a habit of breaking the controllers in a rage. Unfortunately it didn't work as intended and I've had to learn to repair PS5 controllers

I'm going to be blunt here: This isn't an issue with Sony banning something that allows cross controller support: the ban was on a company who made a cheating device. Complain to the makers of the Cronus Zen for not making a simple version that does not have cheating functions and just allows normal conversions.
But even then, there's a lot of internal issues on why other controllers just cannot be supported. The largest example are advertised features being absent (gyro, haptic differences, etc.) and also just plain greed (Sony makes their own controllers, as does Microsoft and Nintendo. Why give the competition a free pass on more money when they can ensure they get all of it). It also causes issues with button prompts, since PS5s don't have an A button. Overall, while this sounds like not a big deal to accessibility users, who are just happy the game flat out works, this can cause issues with regular users, who are the majority, and results in blaming both the hardware and the developers of a title for "having the wrong button prompts."
Overall, I get the issue, but until everyone agrees to do what Valve has been pushing with the Steam Input system (which translates basically all controllers so game devs don't have to worry, including the button prompts), it's not going to be a fixed issue anytime soon. That also said, this is Sony we're talking about, who is petty enough to release updates to the Vita and PSP post termination just to try and stop custom firmware to play backups on discontinued hardware. Nintendo has also done the same thing with the 3DS.

Question for any commenters here who need more accessible controllers than the stanard fare:
What would be *your* perfect controller?
    Am curious.

Existing? I have Flydigi Vader 3 Pro, it has Hall Effect joysticks, 4 back buttons, analog/digital triggers, 4 profiles. Minor flaws aside, this is as close to a perfect and reasonably priced device for me. I also ordered a similar but maybe (slightly) better gamepad from another brand that I won’t name because I can’t vouch for it yet.
Not existing? I guess Steam-Deck-but-a-gamepad. So take the Steam Controller, redesign it slightly to add another joystick, two extra back buttons, but keep the dual stage triggers, that would probably be awesome (I don’t own the Steam Deck, but I do own the Steam Controller).
TL; DR Any regular gamepad with 4 extra back buttons is 85-90% there for my needs. Anything else is chasing (probably non-existent) perfection 😄

can sony/microsoft/nintendo look at what the MIDI protocol and apply it for controllers and audio?

    • @FlameSoulis
      @FlameSoulis 6 месяцев назад

...why would you want to use MIDI for audio?
There was a sort of unified joystick protocol but that requires going back to old port connectors.

@@FlameSoulis this is from my other account but let me state what I mean by what I said: is not implementing MIDI on audio, is looking what The MIDI Manufacturers Association did as footsteps to accessibility instead of competing. Implementing such standard for game controllers and such could be easier for devs, manufacturers, gamers... idk

Definitely can't say it's deliberate, I doubt Sony targeted this specific device. Probably more of an incidental anti-cheat mechanism.
Other than that I agree with your points.

PC in Crossplay is the downfall for console gamers. So many PC players drink their own pee, yummy, aimbot can't help half of these mouth breathers or paying mum back for their pc.
