  • In todays video we have a Acura B18c1 GSR engine getting opened up and rebuilt. This engine has been seeing more oil than normal burning through it, which leads us to take a look inside and show you what causes this in some cases. As you already know, We will be making other videos showing what parts we use on this engine and how to rebuild your Honda/Acura B-series engine.

Love the part too where you talked about the piston skirts and those groove that retain oil An old machinist once told me they did that or prefer it for durability old man said they called it “oiling groove” 😅 once again beyond happy to see this video :)

I put a really thin layer of RTV on a water pump gasket once, because the sealing surfaces were extremely rough (it was a rusty iron block) and I didn't think that the paper gasket would conform to the pitting, it worked just fine.
Edit: Some people do it to hold the gasket in place.

Its amazing these types of machine shops are around and can be found these days. Back when I was building engines for my Supra getting the machine shop to even acknowledge that the surface finish mattered was like pulling teeth. As soon as I would bring up surface finish they would say "we will make it the right finish" and refuse to provide any profilometer readings, probably because they didnt have one. As soon as any technical inquiries were brought up it was an attack on their knowlege and defenses would go up. This is part of the reason I got out of the hobby, because I felt like automotive machine shops wouldn't cater to the customer. It was always "we know whats best" and thats it. Needless to say I ended up with engines that would burn oil because the rings never would seat properly. Wish I knew a shop like this.

I’ve never heard of any manufacturer suggesting front or rear main seals for routine maintenance reasons. I even viewed normal, and severe service tables for a Honda vehicle that came stock with a b18. Obviously seal cut is real, but can occur in the normal life span of a seal. Replacing a seal that isn’t leaking is a preemptive measure at best, and not suggested by Honda.

If the cylinder has begun to strongly deform into an egg shape, then re-drilling will make the cylinder round again, but is there a risk that the deformation of the cylinder will continue into the shape of the egg after re-drilling when the engine starts operating again? Is there a way to make the cylindrical shape as supportive / straight as possible? At worst, I have seen 3 Honda B20A9 -A7 and A3 engine blocks with at least about 0.25 - 0.35mm oval cylinders.

What is the correct amount of ring "tension" ?
If ring tension is important, why can you buy low tension rings for race motors?
Why do some people gas port pistons to increase ring seal?
In any engine,is it not gas "blowby" that creates ring tension against the bore?

    • @realstreetperformance

No, if there is a gasket no RTV is needed. On some engines the factory notes to add a small amount of RTV if there is a seam from another component, like a front cover.
