I had the lifetime joy during college at UCSB to drive down to San Fernando Vally clubs during the week, at night, and see all of these guys just jam in a small venue, for fun, for $1.00 coverage charge. It was a 75 minute drive each way and I must of done it with friends at least 50 times to see these virtuoso musicians. Saw many other studio jazz fusion musicians the same way during the late 70s and early 80s just jammin together. Was the time my life. I am so lucky and grateful to have experienced this then and now. Love them forever. I could never forget those nights.
Saw RTF in San Francisco in early 1980s, with Al Di Meola. It was unreal. You haven't seen anything until you see Stanley take a bow to the acoustic double bass. He is the God of Bass.
This band is one of the reasons the bar was so high in the 70's.
this band is the reason many people were high in the 70s!
That's so true...why I picked up the guitar formed a band and never looked back
It's still high.
So true.
I know you wrote this 6 years ago. But you are so right.
RTF broke new barriers with their High Energy, Melodic Fusion sound. Still the most creative audacious musicians in the world.
Stanley Clarke is just the maestro here and Chick is having a blast playing dueling violin/synths...so great to see these masters....always loved Lenny White's solid work...
Count them in as part of the Fathers of Fusion,What a Beautiful time for new Music
Golden
The Fathers Of Fusion! - What a great name!
These guys kick so much ass there ain't hardly none left!!!!!!!
This is a gift from heaven
We miss Chick! RIP Great Master!
this is greatness man all of these cats are world class
I saw Stanley do this at the Chestnut Cabaret in Philly in the early 80's.
While standing on the table next to me.
I got a few great photos of him in color and B&W with my med format camera.
I later got to meet Stanley at Phila College of the Arts (were I studied Photo)where he taught a master class with music students.
After the cIass he hung out, I walked up to him gave him a bunch of prints from the Chestnut told him I was a long time fan, he signed a few prints for me and also sent me a thank you letter from his Ca. studio. Very cool and approachable
This is by far the best rendition of this song that I have heard! What a lineup.
Who’s on Guitar?
Frank Gambale@@alexstone63
It's a once in a lifetime event to see this much talent on the same stage, at the same time...what a privilege!
How could you not be happy after seeing them play like this?
jeez, how good are these guys???
a song not only for chop lovers, what a melody.
Just awesome. And fun. Stanley Clarke nudged everybody into the fun zone.
Those jazz musicians can really rock!!...
HAHA I love how at 4:18 Stanley leads the thing and points his hand like: “ now u two guys (chick and jean) play for a while” - I love that cause Chick is the leader of the group and he's such an authority in the jazz world in terms of reputation, also chick is quite intimidating and opinionated figure - but even so, Stanley is comfortable enough with him and the band that he felt he could do that.
I'm assuming this is at least in part because this is a song from Stanley's solo work.
True magic especially Jean Luc Ponty
the gods of fusion, absolutely sensational
Jean Luc brings a smooth sonic beauty to this old classic. Frank too. I dig the knew arrangement. Jazz~Fusion Rocks!
Chick COREA (Piano) Stanley CLARKE (Bass) Lenny WHITE (Drums) Jean-Luc PONTY (Violin) Frank GAMBALE (Guitar)
Saw every one on this list but the guitar player.. The guitar players is killer though!! Saw Jean-Luc Ponty with King Krimson and Mahavishnu Orchestra as well.... Cool post!
Ron F Same here. Saw them in the 70's. They sounded great. So good.
= a nasty ass line up 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I got to see RTF 7 times in the 70's & 00's AWESOME
Return to Forever
“Enriching lives since the 1970’s”
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Nice bit of improve beginning 4:18 where you see Clarke motion to Ponte and Corea to start trading riffs. This, in the middle of Ponte's solo. He doubles Corea note for note back and forth and finally after reaching a crescendo back to melody. Very cool and shows Ponte's virtuosity (and humbleness).
Yes Yes Yes An Amazing version my new fav 😎❤😚😁😂
that is the best lead guitar tone i have every heard in my life
Frank Gambale is a bad man, one of my favorite fusion guitarists along with Holdsworth and J.Beck.
Holdsworth just died a few months ago sadly. I saw him with Bill Bruford's band MANY years ago. Jeff Beck = All Time Great.
Al DiMeola is missing. Love around
Love Frank's tone but Al on the Black Les Paul gives me goosebumps.
This is really the band Stanley Clarke put together, don't get me wrong, love it, including the electric violin!
I got to see Stanley do School Days solo, while standing on the table I was sitting at, at the Chestnut Cabaret in Phila in the 1980's.
Did a saxophonist named Michael Pedicin open that night?
I saw RTF romantic warrior at the Dorthy Chandler Pavilion 76-77 it floored me. Best fusion Ever!
Saw the tour when they came through Dallas.Changed my life.
Great to see this been listening to them from day 1 over 50 years
School Days never sounded so good... What a great cast for the music.
This is the all time greatest band ever!!! Wish Al was there
May be the best arrangement of School Days...ever! Okay that's hyperbole, but who cares?I'm feeling this.
There’s a live version with Billy Cobham on drums and Larry Carlton on guitar that’s pretty fantastic as well!!! Look it up
I agree it is good
Hell yeah
Super Sick Super Lineup a dream
Schools Days!! There was place called the Plaid Locks in Buffalo, NY in 1975. Located on E. Ferry and Jefferson St.. They would play this song!! I was a young lad back then. The place was rockin' back then... I hear the song and it brings back memories of the old day's!! This song is in the memory of my friend Ms .Surrae Holloway July 2015.. Peace
Absolutely stunning !!!!!
The music takes you to another, better place. Really gets the pulse pounding, for sure. Although the arrangement is long it isn't redundant like rock-type songs.
Holy shit! This is bringing tears to my eyes. It is too real.
Lenny has such a great feel and groove on this.
nahh, too laid-back
@@HammondB200 The drummer is the timekeeper. Its about groove. You wanna hear somebody tearing the doors off the place, go list to some silly ass rock.
true master craftsman plying their trade!!!!
Love that song
Savage. Absolutely class
THX. Saw them live here in Berlin at the Zitadelle.
I love so must these GYES
"Without music life would be a mistake" Friedrich Nietzsche
What an interesting version of this song. Very well done. I really like this version.
A more gentle version of the hearthaching nostalgia embodied in the original recording -- the yearning is less desperate, more tender
Gambale is a cool fit in this outfit.
I like him in RTF much better than I ever did in Chick's Elektric Band. Not sure why.
Vraiment excellent ***** des musiciens de grand talent!
BBM ♪♫ *¨*•

04:16 - Ladies and gentlemen, your conductor for this evening is . . . Maestro Stanley Clarke!
Moooooore !!!!!!!
I had never seen this before and got emotional. I wondered what the hell happened to music? These dudes were some superhero's to me and set me on my musical journey in my youth.

Gambale!!!!!!!!!
This was Return To Forever IV tour
Holy shit!
This piece was a staple in my house at the time, still enjoy it very much
Al D., what memories, Story about Al was that he was difficult to work with, this I also heard from a security agent I worked with. I was thrown when I heard it, I loved Al's playing, still do.
Al is a genius player. But, doesn't like touring. He is a critical perfectionist and can be hard to work with.. I've heard the same as you from insiders as well.
When I was 17 in 1977.I first heard the Elegant Gypsy record.I was blown away.I called him at midnight at home.lol He talked to me for about 45 minuites.Lol.... The silly things kids do.
Look at the Elegant Gypsy album.Tell me what's funny about it.He thought it was cool I noticed it.lmao
レニー・ホワイトのオープンハンドかっこいいわ。
that violin and piano solo though
Gamble: One of the first masters of the rake! =)
Gambale can shred if he wants. He can play jazz until the sun sets. He can play fusion and classic rock. Frank just needs to get rid of the tin can amps that he frequently uses on stage. Frank plays in same volume level of Pat Metheny. You can sit in front row and the volume is just on the edge of being able to be heard. I've heard the same comments from other fans at shows.
cool. fun and hard to play this in your left hand while soloing..
I went to lenny white and the astral pirates show in sf...what a monster drummer...
respeCT!lUV yOU FROM !999!
